Chapter 1
Chapter 1 – The Gala Encounter
Selina Cortez adjusted her sleek black dress as she stepped out of the car, the cool night air brushing lightly against her skin. The grand hotel loomed in front of her, its entrance glowing with warm golden lights. Valets moved with precision, guests in designer gowns and tailored suits walking in like they owned the world.
She took a deep breath.
“Okay, Selina… this is it.”
Hindi ito basta-bastang gabi para sa kanya. This wasn’t just another social event. This was the opportunity—the kind na minsan lang dumating sa buhay. Tonight, she wasn’t just Selina. She was Selina Cortez, CEO and founder of a startup that was hanging by a thread… and desperately needed investors.
As she entered the ballroom, she was instantly greeted by a wave of elegance and power.
Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead, their reflections dancing across the polished marble floor. The soft hum of conversations filled the air—voices of businessmen, investors, and entrepreneurs exchanging ideas, deals, and quiet power plays. The faint clink of champagne glasses created a rhythm that felt almost hypnotic.
Selina’s heels clicked softly as she walked further inside, her eyes scanning the room.
Ang daming bigatin…
She recognized a few faces—people she’d only ever seen in business magazines or online articles. Mga taong may pangalan. Mga taong may pera. Mga taong may kakayahang baguhin ang kapalaran ng startup niya sa isang pirma lang.
Her heart started racing.
Pero hindi siya pwedeng magpakita ng kaba.
Confidence. Kailangan iyon. Kahit hindi siya sigurado sa sarili niya, she had to look like she was. Because in a room like this, weakness was easy to spot—and even easier to crush.
She straightened her back, lifted her chin slightly, and forced her shoulders to relax.
“Fake it till you make it,” she whispered under her breath.
She walked toward the drinks table, planning to grab a glass—not because she needed it, but because it gave her something to do. Something to hold. Something to steady her hands.
And then—
She felt it.
That strange shift in the air.
Parang may nagbago.
Her gaze drifted across the room… and that’s when she saw him.
Adrian Valdez.
Even if she hadn’t seen his face before, she would’ve known.
Because he didn’t just stand in the room—he owned it.
He was positioned near the center, surrounded yet somehow untouchable. Tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit that screamed quiet luxury. His posture was relaxed, but there was something about him—something sharp, controlled, and undeniably powerful.
His dark eyes moved slowly across the crowd, observant, calculating.
Like a predator.
Selina swallowed.
So that’s him…
The name alone carried weight in the business world. Ruthless CEO. Strategic genius. Untouchable. And according to rumors—impossible to impress.
Maraming natatakot sa kanya.
But Selina?
Hindi.
What she felt wasn’t fear.
It was something else.
A challenge.
Her lips curved slightly as she looked away, pretending not to notice him.
“Let’s see kung gaano ka talaga kahirap i-impress, Mr. Valdez,” she murmured.
She reached for a glass of champagne, her fingers steady despite the storm brewing inside her chest.
But before she could even take a sip—
“Quite ambitious, aren’t you?”
The voice came from beside her.
Deep. Smooth. Controlled.
And dangerously close.
Her breath hitched for just a fraction of a second.
Slowly, she turned her head.
And there he was.
Adrian Valdez.
Up close, he was even more intimidating. His presence was overwhelming—not loud, not aggressive… but powerful in a way that demanded attention without asking for it.
His eyes were fixed on her.
Sharp. Assessing.
As if he was already dissecting her in his mind.
Selina lifted an eyebrow, masking the sudden rush of adrenaline.
“I prefer to call it determination,” she replied calmly.
Adrian’s lips curved into a faint smirk.
“Determination…” he echoed, tilting his head slightly. “Or foolishness?”
The words hit.
Sharp. Direct.
For a split second, she felt the sting.
But she didn’t let it show.
Instead, she smiled—cool, composed.
“I suppose time will tell.”
There was a brief pause.
Then Adrian chuckled softly.
The sound was low, almost amused… but it sent an unexpected shiver down her spine.
“I like a woman who talks back,” he said.
Selina crossed her arms lightly, meeting his gaze.
“Good. Because I don’t plan on staying quiet.”
For a moment, they just stood there.
Locked in silent tension.
People moved around them, conversations continued, but for Selina… everything seemed to blur.
All she could focus on—
Was him.
And the way he was looking at her.
Not like the others.
Not dismissive.
Not indifferent.
But interested.
And that alone was dangerous.
She turned slightly, reaching again for her drink.
But then—
It happened.
A small misstep.
Her heel caught just slightly against the floor.
Her balance shifted.
And before she could react—
Her hand brushed against Adrian’s glass.
Time slowed.
The champagne tilted—
—and spilled.
Straight across the front of his perfectly tailored suit.
A collective gasp rippled through the nearby crowd.
Selina froze.
“Oh my God—”
Her eyes widened as she looked at the damage.
The dark fabric was now soaked, the expensive material clearly ruined.
Great. Just great, Selina.
Adrian didn’t move at first.
He simply looked down at his suit.
Then slowly… he lifted his gaze to her.
His eyes had darkened.
“Are you… serious?”
His voice cut through the noise like a blade.
Cold. Sharp. Controlled.
Selina felt heat rush to her cheeks.
“I—I’m sorry,” she said quickly, straightening her posture. “It was an accident.”
She expected anger.
Maybe even humiliation.
But instead
Adrian stared at her.
Long.
Intense.
As if trying to read something deeper.
Then suddenly
He laughed.
Soft. Low. Unexpected.
The sound sent chills down her spine.
“Accidents like this…” he said slowly, stepping just a little closer, “…usually get punished.”
Selina’s pulse spiked.
But not from fear.
No.
From something else entirely.
Excitement.
Challenge.
She lifted her chin slightly, refusing to back down.
“Then I guess you’ll have to decide if I’m worth the trouble.”
For a brief second, something flickered in Adrian’s eyes.
Surprise.
Then interest.
Real interest.
And that—
That was dangerous.
Selina held his gaze for one more moment before stepping back.
“I’ll leave you to… deal with that,” she added, glancing at his suit.
Then she turned.
And walked away.
Each step steady.
Controlled.
Even if her heart was pounding like crazy inside her chest.
What just happened…?
She exhaled slowly, gripping her clutch tighter.
That wasn’t part of the plan.
At all.
But somehow…
It didn’t feel like a mistake.
Because as embarrassing as it was—
She had done something very few people could.
She had caught Adrian Valdez’s attention.
And not just for a second.
But in a way he wouldn’t forget.
Across the room, Adrian watched her leave.
His gaze followed her every step.
The faint smile on his lips didn’t disappear.
Instead, it deepened.
“Interesting…” he murmured.
Most people in that room tried too hard.
Tried to impress him.
Tried to please him.
But her?
She didn’t.
She challenged him.
Talked back.
And then
Spilled champagne on him.
Bold.
Careless.
Or maybe…
Calculated.
Either way—
He was intrigued.
And Adrian Valdez didn’t get intrigued easily.
His eyes narrowed slightly as Selina disappeared into the crowd.
“No,” he said under his breath.
“I won’t forget you.”
Back on the other side of the ballroom, Selina leaned lightly against a pillar, trying to steady her breathing.
Her mind was racing.
Okay… so that happened.
She let out a quiet laugh.
“Nice one, Selina. First impression pa lang, disaster na.”
But deep inside
She knew.
It wasn’t just a disaster.
It was something else.
Something that could either ruin everything…
Or change everything.
She glanced back toward the center of the room.
And even from a distance
She could feel it.
His gaze.
Still on her.
Her lips curved slightly.
“Game on,” she whispered.
Because one thing was certain—tanon
That encounter?
Hindi pa iyon ang katapusan.
Simula pa lang iyon.
At ang tanong
Magiging rivalry ba ito?
O mas mapanganib pa doon?
Cliffhanger:
Will Selina’s bold first impression turn into a powerful alliance… or ignite a dangerous game with a man like Adrian Valdez?
