PROLOGUE
“Mom! Is it really necessary for me to be with you? I know it's Grandpa, but I don't want to squander my two months sulking in my room. You're aware that I'm not fond of Grandpa. He'll merely have me go through some business trainings and study about his business." I kept winning as I shoved my staff inside the bag.
"Don't worry, honey. We'll just be there for a week before heading to Hawaii." When I heard the word Hawaii, I discreetly grinned with delight. I couldn't help but smile because I was glad.
"Just the two of us?"
“Yes, just the two of us. So quick, and we'll be late for our trip." I hurriedly packed my belongings as the thought of a vacation in Hawaii filled my mind. I am already planning on things to do once we arrived there.
"Mom, I think it's best if we take another route because there's a traffic here." We could be late." I said and I sipped a soda drink.
"I don't know any other way, and please, no soda; it's not healthy," I smiled at her as I tossed the can of soda outside.
"Nadine! What the? It's not good!" she said, and I just hugged her for her reaction.
"I am only teasing you." I whisper to her ear and tighten the hug.
"I'm driving," she protested.
"It's traffic, mom." After a few seconds, I pulled my arms from her and checked the internet for another route. Mom turned on the stereo and we sang along with the song. When I found another route, I showed my mom the map.
“It's relaxing here! How did you manage to find this way?”
"In the Waze app." I chuckle as I show her my phone. It's true that this area is relaxing. The road was bordered by trees, and you could enjoy the chilly breeze and the view of the mountains. It's just a one-way road with no residences or establishments. It's an alternative route to get to the metropolis; often, individuals from the provinces use it.
"Please double-check your seatbelt, honey,"
"Mom, what's the matter?" my brow furrowed in response to her tone.
"Can you get out of the car while it's moving?" she asked instead.
“Mom" I screamed in panic as I found a tear in her eye.
"The brake isn't working properly.”
"But I only used it yesterday, and — oh my goodness!" Horror flashed across my face when I remembered the burning scent of the car when I parked it yesterday.
"Please, Honey, go outside." She took my hand, and no matter how hard she tried to remain calm in the situation, her tears kept betraying her.
“Honey! Please go outside."
"What about you?" I asked with my lips quivering. I am in panic and I can’t help but to cry.
"I'll follow you, but first I'll make sure nothing bad happens to you." I unbuckled my seatbelt and opened the door, but before jumping, I held her tightly and sobbed.
"Would you please follow me?" I also unlocked the door beside her and unbuckled her seatbelt so she could easily escape after I was done.
"Promise," she said gently, but I was taken aback as she pushed me outside. My eyes became larger and my heart began to clench when I saw a car approaching our car. Everything is happening so fast that I didn't have the chance to blink my eyes.
“Mom!” I yelled. I rush towards her. Hugging her lifeless body bathed in her own blood.
Nothing has been the same since then.
I sat down and placed the white flower on the white tombstone, caressing it and tracing the name carved on it.
'I wish I had told you I love you before, I hope I made you feel how much I care for you, and If only I had known life would be this short, I would have spent all the time I had simply to be with you.'
I tried to dry my tears, but it seems that the despair I'm experiencing within is too good at keeping them from falling. It's been a year, but everything is still vivid in my mind. Despite my trembling hands and quivering lips, I am completely numb. The chill from the night breeze is nothing compared to the coldness I've been feeling since then.
I leaned on the grass, looking up at the starry sky, tracing the pattern of stars.
'How would it feel if I were there with you?'
