Il raconte l’histoire d’Anne Elliot, jeune Anglaise de vingt-sept ans, qui retrouve par hasard Frederick Wenworth dont elle a refusé la demande en mariage quelques années plus tôt. À l’époque, la jeune fille s’était laissée persuadée qu’une telle union ne présentait aucun avantage. Mais aujourd’hui, Anne se rend compte qu’elle éprouve encore des sentiments pour monsieur Wenworth et elle ne sait comment réagir, d’autant plus que des soucis familiaux chamboulent sa vie jusqu’alors bien réglée.À travers ces retrouvailles dont l’issue demeure incertaine tout au long de l’ouvrage, Jane Austen aborde la position de la femme dans la société géorgienne ainsi que la vie mondaine à Bath, ville d’eau très en vogue au dix-neuvième siècle.

Persuasion is the last completed novel by Jane Austen and was published posthumously in 1818 – curiously together with her first novel Northanger Abbey. The link to Northanger Abbey is due to the fact that the stories of both novels are set partly in Bath and deal with the superficial life of this fashionable city.The protagonist of the novel is Anne Elliot, intelligent, accomplished and attractive, but unmarried at the age of 27. When she was seven years younger she fell in love with Frederick Wentworth, a honorable but poor naval officer. Because of his poverty, her mentor, Lady Russell, persuaded her to reject his proposal of marriage. After all, Wentworth reenters Anne´s life, and Anne realizes that women never give up their feelings of love even when all hope is lost.The novel deals with persuasion as a fundamental process in human communication and shows at the same time that there might be something like ´just´ and ´unjust´ persuasion. The satirical and comic work offers a vivid depiction of 19th-century middle-class life as it follows the romantic relationships of Elinor and Marianne Dashwood.The story pivots on two sisters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, personifications of good sense and sensibility (emotionality), respectively. Lady Susan Vernon, a beautiful and charming recent widow, visits her brother- and sister-in-law, Charles and Catherine Vernon, with little advance notice at Churchill, their country residence. Catherine is far from pleased, as Lady Susan had tried to prevent her marriage to Charles and her unwanted guest has been described to her as "the most accomplished coquette in England". Among Lady Susan's conquests is the married Mr. Manwaring. The novel follows Anne Elliot, a young Englishwoman of 27 years, whose family is moving to lower their expenses and get out of debt. They rent their home to an Admiral and his wife. The wife’s brother, Navy Captain Frederick Wentworth, had been engaged to Anne in 1806, and now they meet again, both single and unattached, after no contact in more than seven years. This sets the scene for many humorous encounters as well as a second, well-considered chance at love and marriage for Anne in her second bloom.

Sir Walter Elliot, of Kellynch Hall, in Somersetshire, was a man who, for his own amusement, never took up any book but the Baronetage; there he found occupation for an idle hour, and consolation in a distressed one; there his faculties were roused into admiration and respect, by contemplating the limited remnant of the earliest patents; there any unwelcome sensations, arising from domestic affairs changed naturally into pity and contempt as he turned over the almost endless creations of the last century; and there, if every other leaf were powerless, he could read his own history with an interest which never failed. Alla morte del padre, le sorelle Dashwood sono costrette a vivere in ristrettezze economiche e a lasciare la loro casa natale al fratello John e alla sua perfida moglie Fanny per trasferirsi in una modesta abitazione nel Devonshire. Attraverso strade diverse, una tramite l’intelligenza e la saggezza, l’altra grazie alla sua anima pura e romantica, riusciranno a cogliere l’essenza stessa dell’esistenza. Vanitosa ed egocentrica, non le interessa l’amore romantico e ritiene quindi di non doversi sposare, sebbene le consuetudini della società del tempo vedano nel matrimonio l’unica ragione di vita di una donna. Tuttavia Emma si diverte tantissimo nel cercare di combinare matrimoni tra amici e conoscenti, fino a che una serie di fraintendimenti, causati dalla cecità della protagonista di fronte ai suoi sentimenti e a quelli degli altri, porta il racconto a prendere una piega quasi da “commedia degli equivoci”. Jane Austen, scrivendo il romanzo, diceva: “Sto lavorando a un’eroina che non piacerà a nessuno, se non a me”, poiché Emma, così poco equilibrata, snob e viziata, è completamente diversa dagli altri personaggi femminili presenti nelle sue opere. Ma, nonostante i suoi difetti, la protagonista di questo volume riesce a catturare immediatamente la simpatia dei lettori, che perdonano i suoi errori e parteggiano per lei. Alla fine, Emma è costretta a prendere coscienza della realtà, in quella che è una satira divertente e spietata non solo dei costumi della società ottocentesca, ma anche della vanità e dell’egoismo umani.

La protagonista del libro è Fanny Price, una ragazza semplice, educata, dotata di una grande moralità e di buon senso, che le fanno vedere le cose sempre nella giusta prospettiva. Fanny, a causa delle misere condizioni della sua famiglia, viene cresciuta a Mansfield Park, in casa dei suoi ricchi parenti, gli zii Bertram, insieme ai quattro figli di questi: Tom, Edmund, Maria e Julia. Le cugine hanno un comportamento frivolo, mentre Edmund è l'unico che mostra rispetto per la ragazza, snobbata da tutti per le sue origini popolari. L'arrivo dei fratelli Crawford, Henry e Mary, due sofisticati londinesi, rompe la monotonia della sonnolenta vita dei Bertram, tanto che in pochi giorni Edmund si innamora di Mary. Crawford, dopo aver fatto il don giovanni con le sorelle Bertram, s'infatua di Fanny. La ragazza, però, è segretamente innamorata di Edmund e non tollera i comportamenti di Henry, rifiutandone le attenzioni. L'atteggiamento superficiale di Mary, inoltre, allontana Edmund che comincia ad apprezzare le doti della cugina...
