They Called Me Old Bird, I Walked AwayUpdated at Aug 5, 2026, 00:31
Three months into my new job, I figured out all my coworkers were calling me "old maid" behind my back.
That stupid nickname came from Adrian's stuck-up, holier-than-thou secretary.
The joke? I was 32 years old, eight years into a relationship, still waiting for a ring and a wedding that never seemed to happen.
I cornered Adrian, voice tight with a mix of anger and humiliation. "Do you know your people are calling me 'old maid'?"
He didn't even bother glancing up from his work. "Sabrina's always been like that, she's just blunt, runs her mouth without thinking, it was nothing but a silly joke. You're 32, are you really gonna pick a fight with a young girl?"
Then he looked up at me in a lazy, amused smirk, tugging at his lips. "Come on, though. It's actually kinda accurate, isn't it?"
I sucked in a sharp, cold breath. It felt like an ice-cold hand had clamped around my heart, squeezing until I could barely breathe. All eight years I'd poured into us, all the youth I'd spent waiting for him? It was nothing but a cheap punchline to him.
I didn't let him see how badly his words stung. I spun on my heel and walked out without a word. I handed in my resignation that same day, then blocked him on every last social media app, phone contact, and chat platform we used.
For the first time ever, that perpetually calm, unshakable man totally panicked, his usual unflappable facade shattering to pieces.
"Evelyn, wait, I'm begging you, come back—"
