The Good News
Explosions. They happen with seemingly nothing to cause them. Stars hang to torch the night sky. Red and blue planets dance in space. Flowers bloom. People fall in love. We are born and then we die. What is the meaning of all of this? Why are we here? And like most people wonder, what is the meaning of life? These answers will come to a young lady, named Eva. Who is ordinary and yet so very unordinary.    In the beginning, there was nothing. A black emptiness saturated space. There was nothing, except for God. He was strong and very handsome. He had mid-length golden locks and a white robe that shown like the sun. He always existed, but he was trapped by his thoughts. “Why am I here?” He wondered. “Am I meant to be alone like this?” He spent all of eternity trying to figure out who he was. Day after day he began to realize how much he was capable of. He made his fists flash with lightning. He made snow swirl about him. He thought bigger.            “What if I could make other beings? If I could, what sort of leader should I be? Should I be an all powerful dictator with my own servants? But as soon as the thought entered his mind, he felt so ashamed. The thought of creating everything for himself made him ponder if he was selfish. But he had to consider everything because he was eternal and only wanted the best possible outcome. He spent all of eternity figuring out who he was and what he should do about it. He roamed through space and no matter how fast or slow he traveled he never found anything.      Then, as if it were destiny, he was stopped in his tracks by a bright light. Whatever it was, it glowed with the essence of gold and sapphire. Wonder filled his heart and he flew as fast as he could to this light. And the closer he got the more the light faded and thus a planet was revealed called, “Dea Domus.” It was a paradise of exotic plants, trees and flowers. Massive waterfalls fell and the rivers from it flowed through all the forests and meadows. It was like a rainforest: beautiful and serene. Except this one was very quiet. There were no people or animals of any kind. The only sound one could hear was the trickling of water. As God descended like a star and landed in a meadow filled with fragrant and carefully crafted flowers, he took in the first sight he ever saw. “It’s beautiful!” God was filled with emotion. “But how did this place get here?” He wondered.      Suddenly, he heard something that he himself did from time to time: Singing. “I don’t know who you are or where you come from, but divine one, you are my love. I’ve dreamed of you coming to me from up above. Once we meet, we’ll stay together. We will be together forever.” He heard the voice coming from behind him and when he turned around, there he saw her sitting on a tree limb. He slowly approached her. “Who are you?” He asked softly. This beautiful young woman got down from the tree that had vines of flowers. And she looked into the eyes of the one who would one day be her beloved. She had radiant eyes that beamed through God’s soul. She had wavy, brown hair that twirled in the soft, gentle wind. She too was wearing a white robe and wore a golden wreath on her head.      “I am Kalila. Who are you?” She asked as she slowly walked towards him. He hesitated, a bit surprised that she would come near him. “I-I am Dominus.” Dominus and Kalila looked deeply into one another’s eyes. And then, with no warning, they smiled and embraced each other.      “Please, stay with me forever.” Dominus whispered as he held her head close to his chest. “I will.” Kalila said with a smile and a broken voice. They held each other for what seemed like an eternity. For the very first time in their lives, they were truly happy. They were complete. They both glowed with an intense bright light and their hearts became one. Dominus’ lips pressed gently against Kalila’s. Behold, they found the meaning of life!      “And that’s exactly why you should get a boyfriend!” Eva’s father said chuckling as he sipped on some coffee. Eva just stared him down with one of her annoyed looks and then just smiled sarcastically. “Dad, you are never going to get me to marry. Not even with one of your many handed down stories.” Eva said as she took a bite out of her cookie. It was coffee time in a little cottage town in rural Spain. The town was bustling with villagers who went about their daily lives. The place was traditional, but they were starting to invite more and more modern technology.      Eva was a cute fifteen year old girl with long, silky brown hair and had a slender figure. She had a baby face so people always mistook her for being younger. She lived with her father, mother, brother- whose name was Miguel- and two adorable dogs named Spud and Tater. Spud was a spunky Jack Russell and Tater was a warm -hearted Beagle. These dogs were the light of Eva’s life. They meant everything to her and she just shrugged off anyone who ever told her that they were just dogs. Eva had a big heart, but she kept everything to herself most of the time.      “Eva, if you don’t marry how will you be cared for? We can’t take care of you forever, you know.” Eva’s mother said as she started putting the dishes away. “Mother, I’m not saying I’ll never marry anyone; I’m just waiting for true love.” Eva said in a dreamy voice. She picked up Tater and then she sighed and said, “I just believe that there’s no such thing.” “Just be patient Eva, he’ll find you.” Eva’s father said with a smile. “I doubt it.”      “Hello, everyone! I’m back from work!” Miguel said as he barged in and took off his muddy shoes. “Why are you so late? You missed coffee!” Eva’s mother said with her hands on her hips. “Well, I-uh—“ Miguel muttered rubbing the back of his neck. “Mother, Miguel is a man now. He just wants to spend some time with his girlfriend.”      “That woman is seriously your girlfriend now? She has no money; society will frown upon you my son!” “Mother, I love her! And I will save up every cent I earn to buy a house so that I could make her my wife!” Miguel said staring intensely into his mother’s eyes. She just sighed and walked away. “Son.” Eva’s father said putting his hand on Miguel’s shoulder. “Never mind your mother. Marry for love.” Miguel paused for a moment, and then said, “I will, Father.” Miguel smiled with newly found confidence from his father’s words.      “There’s still some daylight left. I think I’ll take the dogs for a walk in the forest.” Eva said walking out the door with the dogs eagerly following her. “Why don’t you make some real friends?” Eva’s father asked as he sat back down on his old leather chair. “They are real friends!” Eva shouted as she shut the door.      It was sunset on a beautiful Autumn’s day. The red and yellow leaves crunched under Eva’s feet as she headed towards the entrance of the forest. The rich, golden light beamed through the tall and barren trees. Eva would’ve walked slower to breathe in the cool, crisp air but she sped up so that Spud and Tater could compete to see who could mark the most territory. It was quiet with the birds softly chirping and the river slowly flowing by. Eva sighed as she looked back at the village.      “I wonder what adventures wait for us beyond this place.” Eva thought to herself. “I want to see what the world looks like! But how will I do that? I have no money. And how can I be a famous rock star in a place like this?” Eva sighed again. “Alright, time for us to head back!” Eva said aloud as the dogs were barking at a deer that paid them no mind.      As they headed back, Eva looked up to see the first few stars in the sky. “Tomorrow’s Thanksgiving! The one good thing about this town is that we are all like one big happy family! We celebrate anything and everything together. And we always change it up! I wonder what will be different about this year.”     Eva walked by the elegant cottages until she reached her house. “I’m home!” Eva announced as the dogs ran inside to play. “Welcome home dear! You’re just in time for dinner!” Eva’s mom said as she set the table. “Smells good! What are we having?” “Well—“ Her mother began with a smile as this was literally her favorite thing to talk about. “We’re having a scrumptious tortilla de patata with pork sandwiches filled with jamon!” “Sounds wonderful! Let me help you set the table.” Eva said gathering the plates and setting them.      The dogs curled up by the fireplace as the family ate their supper. “My dear children, your mother and I have wonderful news!” Eva’s father said as he rose from the table. “What is it?” Eva asked with great excitement. “We’re moving!” “What?!” Eva and Miguel exclaimed, with Eva smiling and Miguel looking horrified.      “Why?” Miguel asked with frustration in his voice. “Because I can no longer work here. There is a new electrician that moved in the village and he has a lot more experience than I do, so, no one wants to hire me anymore.” “What will we do then?” Asked Miguel. “We will move to the suburbs.” “Oh, that’s not too far away from here.” Miguel said a bit relieved. “In America!”      “Huh?” Miguel gasped. “Eva, Miguel, for the longest time I wanted a better life for us, and I really believe that in America we can have that.” “So what if you can make more money in America, we’re happiest right here in Spain!” “Look, Son. Broaden your horizons, go to a great college in America and if you still would rather live here, then you can come back.” He replied as he started puffing on his pipe.      “But what’s wrong with living in the suburbs of Spain?” “Nothing’s wrong with it. It’s just that I feel much more confident to land a job in a place where everyone lives to work rather than work to live.” “But what about Annabelle?” Miguel asked with despair in his tone.      “Oh, my son. How about this. You’ll legally be an adult next year, so I suggest that you choose one of these two options. You can either stay behind and I can ask our good neighbor Paul if he will take you in, or—“ His father hesitated. “You can ask Annabelle if she would like to come with us.”      “Craig!” “Really? You mean it Dad?” “So that’s the real reason you wanted to stay behind.” Eva said giggling. Miguel secretly always wanted to explore the world like Eva, but he was never sure where he belonged. He knew he belonged with his beloved Annabelle, and that’s all he knew.      “Craig, we can’t just trust Miguel to be alone with a girl. We both know what will happen!” “I trust Miguel, and so should you.” Eva’s mom looked absolutely horrified, but she felt a little ashamed for not trusting her son. “Miguel, if this girl comes with us, do you promise-“ “Yes, I promise nothing will happen.” She sighed. “Very well then. She may come.”      The whole family cheered and applauded. Even Eva’s mother smiled a little. “Does anyone else have any other objections?” Eva’s father asked looking around. “Nope!” Eva declared. “Well, then it’s settled. We’re moving! We leave in January!” Once again the family cheered. Even the dogs took interest in all the commotion and started walking around wagging their tails.      “This is so exciting! I’ve never been to America before. I’ve only learned about it in school! It’ll be a long plane ride from here and- oh my God, I’ve never been on a plane!” Eva started rambling to herself as she stood up pacing back and forth. “There goes Eva again!” Miguel said laughing.      “This is awesome! I’ll be able to buy Annabelle and I the house of our dreams!” “And I’ll be able to be a famous singer and travel the world with my little shmukims!” Eva said looking at Spud and Tater. “And I’ll get to have a nice and stable job!” “But we can still retire at a nice beach somewhere, dear!” Eva’s mother, Bertha, said as she gave her husband a peck on the cheek. “Yes, perhaps in another ten years or so.” He said patting her hand. “Oh, don’t ruin the moment!” “My dear, I’m only being realistic.”      “So what’s our house going to look like?” Eva asked as she sat back down. “I have my eye on a quaint brick house with a great big backyard for Spud and Tater to enjoy! It’ll be in a lovely neighborhood that sits only a mile away from your new high school. And there’s a reputable college only a half an hour away from home!” “Wow, you thought of everything!” Eva said smiling. “Yes, I just want you and Miguel to have a bright future.         When we get there, follow your dreams no matter what they may be! And your mother and I will—“ “Retire at the beach!” Eva’s mother interrupted. “But what’s going to happen to all our friends here? I mean, aren’t they going to miss us?” Asked Miguel. “Miguel, sometimes when you dream you must make sacrifices. Fate made this move necessary. But don’t worry, we’ll come back to visit.” “Everything will be alright! You worry too much!” Eva said leaning back on her chair. “Heh, and you don’t worry enough!” Miguel replied as he walked past her, messing up her hair. “Hey!”         “Who wants some pumpkin pie? I’ll be making some more tonight. Thanksgiving’s tomorrow so don’t you even think about waking up for a mid-night snack.” “We won’t. I’ll have some!” Eva said, always having room in her gut for desserts. “No thanks, I gotta wake up early for work.” Miguel said heading towards his room.      “I’m glad I don’t gotta worry about going to work!” Eva said taking a bite. “You will someday.” Her father said taking another puff out of his pipe. “Well, if you thoroughly enjoy what you’re doing than it is no longer work.” Eva said.”That’s true. I hope all of your dreams come true, Eva.” “I’m sure they will!”         “You know, ever since you were born I noticed there was something, well, special about you. While most infants are born crying, you were born laughing!” Eva’s father said as he reached for his newspaper. “I was?” Eva was perplexed. “How peculiar. Why do you think I did that, father?” “Maybe there was something you were happy about.” He replied, flipping a page. “And ever since then, you were always happy. Most people aren’t like that, Eva.” “Hmmm, maybe I was just born an optimist!” Eva said laughing. “Maybe.”         Eva excused herself from the table and made her way to the living room. She curled up on the couch with some piping hot apple cider. She wrapped herself up with a warm, cozy blanket as she turned on the television to watch her favorite soap opera. Her dogs jumped up on the couch to cuddle with her. “Things are finally turning around you guys.” Eva said taking a sip. “America, here we come!”
