Prologue
Gunner I glared at Colin as he shoved Sierra into the car. My fists curled into fists as he turned to me and smirked. I hated my brother. Loathed him and the fact he married a woman he didn’t deserve. She was just an innocent pawn in his game. He loved to collect things. He locked his most prized possessions in a room. He liked to own antiques and collectibles. Sierra was now one of those things. I knew the look he was giving me. It was a “She’s mine and now I’m going to take what I own” face. I forced a smile and gritted my teeth as he drove away to his honeymoon. I turned and got on my motorcycle, driving off into the night. When I arrived at my apartment, I blew out a harsh breath. My neighbor, Jasmine was walking towards me. When will she learn? She and I would never happen. “Gunner, I’ve been waiting for you.” she purred, running her hand down my chest. “Jasmine, you and I are never going to happen.” “Why not?” “Because you’re not my type.” My type was currently married to my brother. I got off my bike and pushed past her. Walking to my apartment, I unlocked my door and turned to close the door. Jasmine glared and hissed. “You’re a dick.” “Then, you should walk away. Go find yourself a nice guy and forget me.” I slammed the door and sighed. Walking to my fridge, I pulled out a beer and opened it. I took a swig and set it down on the bar, thinking of Sierra. I cringed to think what Colin was doing to her. Was he hurting her? Forcing her to do unspeakable things? The ringing of my phone brought me out of my thoughts. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and furrowed my eyebrows. Restricted Calling. I answered the call and hissed, “If this is you, Jasmine, f**k off.” A weak voice whispered, “Gunner, please help me.” “Sierra? Are you okay?” “No.” She whispered, her voice trembling. “Are you hurt? Did my brother do something?” “Please, I’m at his house. I-I can’t… I just need you to come quick.” “I’m on my way, sweetheart. I’ll be there in five minutes.” I ran out and got on my motorcycle, not knowing what I would be in store for. All I knew was, Sierra needed me, and I had a feeling it was all because of one person. My f*****g evil twin. I arrived at Colin’s house and kicked the stand to prop my bike up. A lump formed in my throat as I stepped inside the house. It had been trashed, which meant my brother was pissed. He took it out on the house, and probably Sierra. I walked to his room a pushed the door open slowly. In the corner, Sierra was curled up into a ball, quietly sobbing. She turned to face me, making my blood run cold. Fresh bruises covered her face and her lip was busted. I rushed to her and knelt. “Christ Sierra, what did he do to you?” “I hate him.” She whispered as I caressed her cheek. “Sierra, where is he… where is Colin now?” “He left.” Sierra sucked in a breath and exhaled, “Right after he... he...” “Shh, we don’t have to talk about it. Do you trust me?” “Yes.” “I’m going to pick you up and get you out of here.” “Please, don’t. I don’t want you to get hurt.” She begged, fresh tears running down her cheeks. “Sweetheart, let me take care of you.” “I can’t leave. He said… he said if I ever left him…” “What, Sierra? What did he say.” “That he would kill me.” “You can’t live this way. If this is what he does on his honeymoon, what do you think he’s going to do on your anniversary?” I picked her up gently and laid her down on the bed, careful not to hurt her. I brushed my fingers against her cheek as I kissed her head. “You don’t deserve this, sweetheart. How did he even win your heart?” “He didn’t. He won me in a game of Poker against my father. I’m nothing but a prize.” A prized possession. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, but I’ll get you out of this… if it’s the last thing I do.” I promised. I pulled back and gave her a sad smile, before walking away. I didn’t want to but did it anyway. “Sierra, I’ll be back for you. I promise.” Two years later… I stood in front of Sierra and wiped the blood from her face with a towel. “I hate this. Why don’t you let me take you away from him?” “I’m his wife, Gunner. This is my life now. I must honor and obey my husband. Till death do us part.” “f**k that, he doesn’t deserve you and you damn well know it.” “I-I love him… he’s my husband.” “f**k, has he brainwashed you that much? It’s only been two years.” “You better go. Colin is due home in twenty minutes. He’ll be so angry at me.” “No, I’m not leaving. I’m staying for dinner.” “Please, Gunner. I don’t want you to see what he does. Please, don’t do this.” “I’m. Staying. Then, I’m going to decide whether or not to kill my brother.” “Gunner,” She whispered, “I need you to leave before he comes home. It will be so much worse if you’re here when he walks in the door.” I cupped her face and shook my head in disapproval. “Why?! Why do you protect him when all he does is hurt you?” “Because he is my husband and I love him.” I let my hands fall to my sides and frowned. “I’ll leave, but know this, I will be back just as soon as he comes home.” “What do we have here?” My brother’s harsh tone hissed, slamming the door. Sierra plastered a fake smile on her face and said. “Colin, your brother has come for dinner. I told him to go, but he wanted to surprise you. He wants to celebrate your promotion with us.” “Yes, I hope it’s not too much trouble. I was in the neighborhood and thought what the hell.” Colin wrapped his arm around Sierra’s waist possessively and said. “Not a problem. Sierra, sweetheart, go to the bedroom. I want to talk to you. Alone.”
