I looked at Celeste sitting beside Jamie on the lounge.
She looked… happy.
Not the fake smile she sometimes wore when she was trying to convince everyone she was okay. Not the guarded expression I had become so used to seeing since she came into our lives.
This was different.
She was relaxed. Comfortable. Almost peaceful.
And after everything she had been through, seeing that made something inside me loosen.
But then I remembered what she had said.
I need you to promise me you won’t get mad.
That immediately put me on edge.
