Diane tried to look around Mr Thomson’s office, this might be the last time she will be inside it and she didn’t want the memory to die so soon. Mr Thomson had always been her mentor, her guide and he was always willing to take chances with her and believed in her investment ideas. He was one of the first persons to believe in the direct loan payment platform she created, and now that it was under the water he didn’t blame her for the failure, he simply said the world wasn’t ready yet for such innovation .
“Take a seat”Mr Thomson said as he used his coffee cup to gesture where she should seat down.
“You have been on valuable contribution to this company and it saddens my heart to say this” he began.
He should go straight to the point she thought, making the conversation longer doesn’t cushion the pain or make it any easier to bear. She had lost her job and it had been totally her fault, she let her piled up anger for the male gender get the best of her. She was going to get another job and the loan will be payed in no time she thought. Even her didn’t believe that thought, with what was happening at the labour market it is more like the evolutionary times of survival of the fittest. But she was going to fight, she was going to be alright, she always is.
“So it saddens my heart that I have to let you go…. to Dunes global to work” Mr Thomson added.
Her brain had stopped processing the information after he had said let you go, the other part of the sentence was not understandable to her. She understood the “let you go” but to Dunes global, this had better not be real. But it was real, completely and undiluted, Estephan had requested her transfer to his organization.
Well since he owned both now, he could request for transfers within the company as much as he likes.
“But our acquisition deal with Dunes global is not yet final” Diane stated.
“Oh yes it is” Mr Thomson said as he sipped his coffee and smiled.
“I don’t know why the sudden change of mind and the reason for speeding up the acquisition, but since it is in our favor, I am just super excited about the whole process” Mr Thomson added.
“Oh yes I am excited too” Diane said faking a smile, and trying so hard to stop the tears in her eyes from dropping.
“Sorry you had to take one for the team” he said as he walked to the other side of the table where she was sitting and placed a hand on her shoulder.
“You will be fine” he said again trying to comfort her.
“The transfer is effective from tomorrow, it was to be today but take the time to clear your office and get yourself together. It is the least I can do as your former boss” he added.
“Thank you sir” she said still sitting comfortably on the chair.
“You may go now” Mr Thomson said trying to remind her that she would have to stand up from that seat at some point.
After the failed engagement she had and the unsolicited pity party from everyone at the office, she wanted a change of environment. She wanted to meet new people, to have a fresh start with this new bad ass attitude she had, she wanted a place where no one knew the weak, easily manipulated side of her. She couldn’t quit at that time as this was the only job she believed will make enough money for her to finish the loan payment for the house in time and still take care of her mother, sisters and herself in the process. That was the only reason she stayed after the humiliation. But this was worse, how could she work for that misogynistic jerk, she was so sure he wouldn’t let her climb the cooperate ladder rather he will keep her at a spot and lord over her. The self improvement books she read talked about those kind of personalities, it says , they don’t believe you can shine, they don’t let you shine and even when you do shine, they don’t believe it is real. She knew she had no choice but to clear out her office and report at Dunes global tomorrow, so she needed to do it as quickly as possible to reduce the pity glances and goodbye hugs she was going to be forced to receive. She could always make Tracy do it, she should consider it her last task as her assistant. Even as nosy and overbearing Tracy could get, she was one person she was going to miss in the office. She wished she could go with her to the new office as the retraining of another person to get things done the way she liked it would be unbearable .
She went back into her office and sat admiring her old desk for the last time. Even if all the edges were sharp and most of the compartments were jammed, it still felt so personal to her. She was definitely going to miss this office. Her reminiscing process was cut short by a knock on the door. It was Tracy, she walked in and sat down on the seat by the left side facing the table.
“I saw your expression as you came out of the office, what’s wrong? Tracy asked Diane
“Don’t tell me you got fired” Tracy said with an expression of shock and fear on her lips. Diane knew Tracy just wanted to be the first to know about what happened, and a memo will be passed by tomorrow at least so it would hurt to let her know.
“Worse, I got transferred to Dunes global” Diane said as she began to organize the files on the table before she did the ones under her desk.
“Dunes global” Tracy repeated trying to confirm if she heard properly.
“I thought the deal was not final yet? “ Tracy asked
“Well a little bird seemed to have whispered to them to hasten up the process and ruin my life in the process” she said as she slammed the file on the table unable to control her ragging anger.
“So why are you upset, if I may ask” Tracy asked
Diane didn’t understand if Tracy was trying to fuel up her anger or was just being the optimist she always was trying to see the silver lining in every situation.
“I heard that place is amazing, haven’t you seen it, I once dated a guy who worked there and all the stories I heard about that place was so good. Such a pity I could not go in as you can’t even get in without an ID card or a duly signed visitors form” she said.
Diane was not too surprised by what Tracy said as most organizations with big names do basically nothing in the head office minus keeping it beautiful and classy enough to keep their image.
“You would help me clear out my desk at the close of work, I can’t stand the fake goodbyes and the hugs, especially the hugs” Diane said while roiling her eyes
“Sure thing Diane. But please if they ask you if there is anything they could do to make your stay more favorable, just say you need me” Tracy said using her hand to cup her cheeks in order to make a cute face. This made Diane giggle. In all the chaos going on in her head, Tracy always had a way of making her smile.
She kept wake in bed that night thinking of how her life will change once she woke up. She had not picked up her appointment letter, but she was sure it wasn’t going to be something fancy.
She had spent two years being head of investment bankers and was getting use to the power that comes with the title. But she was going to start at a new organization, she was going to have to prove to people that she was not just a pretty face all over again. She also needed the strength, the courage and the endurance to deal with Estephan so that she won’t lose her job entirely. In all the chaos in her brain, she had forgotten about Estephan, the one who made this all happen. He must have been really pissed at her to go through all the trouble for a revenge. He knew it just took him a few phone calls but still she knew she would also pay dearly for those too. In no time she drifted into sleep.
