"Distances and Connection" Episode 1-4
The towering glass building of Apex Corporation gleamed under the afternoon sun, looking pristine and untouchable from the outside. But inside those glossy walls and high-tech offices, secrets were buried deep enough to ruin lives.
Mira stood near the large glass window of the sixteenth-floor corridor, holding a file tightly against her chest. Her heart was beating fast. As an intern, she had only dreamed of working in a corporate giant like this, but over the last few days, she had stumbled upon something she was never meant to see—financial reports pointing straight towards massive corruption and a deliberate cover-up.
"Looking for someone, Miss Mira?"
A sharp, calm, and commanding voice broke her train of thought. Mira turned around quickly.
Zain stood a few steps away. Dressed in a sharp, tailored navy-blue suit, with his sleeves slightly rolled up, he looked the part of a brilliant corporate lawyer. His sharp eyes scanned her face, instantly catching the nervousness in her blue eyes.
"I... I was just getting these documents for the audit department, Mr. Zain," Mira replied, trying her best to keep her voice steady.
Zain took a step closer, narrowing his eyes slightly. He knew Mira was too innocent and honest to be involved in corporate games, but he also knew that holding those papers made her a target.
"The audit department is on the tenth floor, Mira," Zain said quietly, his tone softening just a bit. "And the files you are holding don't belong there. Be careful. The people running this place are dangerous, and the distances between safety and danger are shrinking faster than you think."
Mira looked into his deep, confident eyes, feeling a strange mix of fear and comfort. Even though danger was closing in, she knew that with Zain by her side, she wasn't completely alone.
The quiet hum of the air conditioning in the archive room did little to cool the panic rising inside Mira. She hurriedly placed the files back into the cabinet, her hands trembling. The warning Zain had given her earlier echoed repeatedly in her mind: "The people running this place are dangerous."
She knew it was true. Just a week ago, her elder brother had been falsely accused of data theft and suspended from the very same corporation—all because he had accidentally stumbled upon illegal transactions. Mira had taken his place as an intern just to find the truth and clear his name. But now, she realized she was playing a high-stakes game with people who left no loose ends.
Suddenly, footsteps echoed outside the archive room door.
Mira froze. The heavy oak door creaked open, and a tall silhouette stepped into the dim light. It was Mr. Daniyal, one of the senior directors of Apex Corporation—the very man whose signature was stamped across the fraudulent financial reports.
"Working late, are we, Miss Mira?" Daniyal’s voice was laced with a cold, mocking tone as he stepped closer, blocking the exit. "Or are you perhaps looking for something that doesn't belong to you?"
Mira’s breath hitched. She backed up until her spine hit the cold metal shelves. "I... I was just organizing the files, sir."
Daniyal chuckled softly, a chilling sound in the empty room. "Curiosity can be a very dangerous thing for an intern, young lady. People who dig too deep tend to disappear."
Before Daniyal could take another step towards her, the sharp ring of a phone cut through the tension. Daniyal pulled out his phone, frowned at the screen, and muttered a curse under his breath as he answered it and walked away.
Moments later, a familiar hand gently pulled Mira from behind the shelves into a narrow adjacent hallway. It was Zain.
His expression was fierce yet protective. Without saying a word, he pulled her safely away from the danger zone, the distance between their hearts closing with every beat.
The cool air of the underground parking lot offered a sharp contrast to the suffocating tension inside the building. Zain led Mira toward his car, his grip on her wrist firm yet gentle, ensuring she was safe from prying eyes.
Once they were safely inside the car and the doors were locked, Mira finally let out a breath she felt like she’d been holding for an eternity. Her hands were still shaking slightly.
"Thank you, Zain," she whispered, looking over at him. "If you hadn't arrived at that exact moment... I don't know what Daniyal would have done."
Zain kept his eyes on the steering wheel, his jaw clenched in quiet anger. He turned to face her, his gaze softening as he looked into her frightened blue eyes. "You shouldn't have gone down to the archives alone, Mira. It's too dangerous. Those men aren't just corrupt executives; they are capable of anything to protect their secrets."
"I had to," Mira replied, her voice firm with determination, despite the fear lingering in her chest. "They ruined my brother's career, and they're destroying innocent lives. I can't just sit back and watch."
Zain looked at her for a long moment, a quiet mix of respect and deep worry reflecting in his eyes. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted USB drive, placing it gently on the console between them.
"You don't have to fight them alone anymore," Zain said softly. "While you were distracting Daniyal, I managed to access the main terminal. The financial audit logs and proof of the cover-up are right here on this drive."
Mira stared at the small piece of plastic in disbelief, a wave of hope washing over her. "You actually found it?"
"Yes," Zain replied with a reassuring smile. "Now, our next step is to make sure this truth reaches the right hands before they realize it's gone."
The city lights of Islamabad blurred past the car windows as Zain drove through the quiet night streets. The atmosphere inside the car was tense, charged with the gravity of what they held on that small USB drive.
"Where are we going, Zain?" Mira asked, breaking the silence as she looked at the unfamiliar turns he was taking.
"We are heading to a secure safehouse on the outskirts of the city," Zain replied, keeping his eyes firmly on the road.
"Apex Corporation’s reach is wide, and their security teams might already be tracking any unusual data activity. We can't risk going to your home or mine tonight."
Mira felt a shiver run down her spine, but looking at Zain’s calm and focused profile gave her an immense sense of security. She realized how much she had come to rely on him over these past few weeks of chaos and danger.
Once they arrived at the safehouse—a quiet, modest apartment shielded from prying eyes—Zain quickly set up his laptop on a small wooden table. The dim light of the screen illuminated the room as he plugged in the USB drive.
"If we upload these encrypted files directly to the anticorruption authority and major news networks simultaneously, they won't be able to suppress or delete them in time," Zain explained, his fingers flying across the keyboard.
Mira stood right behind him, watching the progress bar slowly creep forward. "And once this goes public, my brother's name will finally be cleared?"
Zain stopped typing for a second, turned his head slightly to look up at her, and gave her a reassuring nod. "Everything will be set right, Mira. You have my word."
Suddenly, a sharp beep echoed from the laptop. A red warning prompt flashed across the screen: 'External Network Trace Detected.'
Zain’s expression hardened instantly. "They’ve found our location. We don't have much time."
