Chapter 1
RUNNING LOUISA “Wh….Wh…Wh-at could that be?? I panted heavily as I took to my heels, unaware of what was chasing me. I just kept running. Whatever it was, I couldn't tell if it was an animal or a monster, but its heavy impact on the ground shook the entire surface of the earth as it chased me. An hour ago, I was just in my room brooding how I arrived at this spot; fulfilling my father's wish to marry this man named ‘Trevor Swan’. At least I didn't hate him. Not yet anyway. Till I meet him. We have written to each other countless times and professed feelings of love to each other. Perhaps all of that will stick when I finally meet him. Her voice still rings in my head. My stepmother, whose voice would always disturb my peace. It was as though she was sent to make my life a living hell. “Louisa!!!” she called out loud as she barged into my room. She wouldn't do that to her own children or shout their names out like they were some servant, but I am a fair game. No one would speak up for me. “Yes, Lucy,” I answered. “How many times have I told you not to call me that? I am your mother, call me mother.” Another thing I hate about her is her pretentious attitude. She doesn't like me and she knows that I know she doesn't like me, yet she insists on this charade of family bond, pretending in front of my father and the pack that she is a loving mother and I, an unruly and ungrateful child. “Yes, mother. What can I help you with?” I ask. “I need you to go into town for me. I have someone waiting for me with an object I requested. Go get it for me.” There, it struck my mind. “I actually have to get things for Trevor, too. He wrote to me about it.” However, it was nearby compared to that far distance Lucy intended to send me to. “But, the guests are about to arrive, I should be there, to welcome my-” “Oh please…you don't even know if he stands on his two feet,” she said in a harsh tone. “You need not worry. The rest of us will be there to welcome them. Your siblings will not disappoint, now hurry up if you still want to make it.” “Here is the address of who you are to meet, come on, what are you waiting for?!” she snaps as she walks out. With an aggrieved sigh, I take off the cocktail gown I was wearing and put on a long top and jeans before hurrying out of the room. And right in that moment, a voice came in from the opposite room. “Where are you off to?” Mia, my half sister said. She must have noticed my change of dress. “Lucy sent me on an errand, I took off my dress to go do it,” I replied with a sharp tone that seemed like I was pissed. “Now? When guests are about to arrive? I will go talk to her,” she says as she turns around. “Don't,” I called, stopping her in her tracks. “Don't bother, I'm good. I don't mind going,” I concluded. “Bu-” “It’s alright, I really don't mind,” I assure her. Without another word, I hurry out of the room and out of the mansion. I was taking a shortcut through the woods when I heard a snap in the branches of a nearby tree. “It has got to be those little creatures lurking in the woods,” I said to myself. Luckily for them, I'm not putting on my adventurous spirit. I just wanted to be done with these errands and head back home in one piece to meet the guest. “Yes, one piece. Every errand I get from Lucy is a risky one.” I am either being harassed, embarrassed, or thrown all sort of trash for even showing up. It was more like she knew this would be the case but would still insist I go. I come back home to tell her, but I don't get any apology or anything at all. Another snap rented the air, and this time, I was scared. “Who's there?” I voiced out. No response. “I hope you're there?” I whispered to my wolf. I can't lose on both sides. I needed to be sure I had my wolf ready and responsive. The whole place was beginning to look a lot more mysterious than when I started the journey. It was my regular route whenever I was going on errands, but something about it was different. I think I'm being followed. By who? I had no clue. I began to walk fast. For a while, there was no extra sound aside from my feet dashing against the ground as I walked. Before I knew it, I sensed something approaching me from behind. Walking as fast as I was also. I didn't bother to check who or what it was. I took off in a hurry. Running for my life. The figure happened to be running. Running after me. My heart raced, and I heard a loud snarling at my back. “Why am I being chased?” The scent was that of a wolf, but something about it was strange, cold, and intense. It was almost catching up to me when I felt a hand pull me to the trees. “Shhh…..don't make a sound. It's a blind one but has a really wild nose,” the strange girl said to me. We couldn't move. We sat still behind the big tree. Unconsciously, I held her hands so tight out of fear. Her face looked familiar. “Who are you?” I asked in a low voice. There was no response. I noticed as the shadowy figure moved past us swiftly. It must have lost my scent indeed when the girl pulled me. “How did you know?” I asked. “That doesn't matter for now. We need to get to safety. That was a vampire wolf trailing you. He owns these woods,” she said. “A vampire wolf?” I haven't heard that in a long time. I thought it was a myth. I was this close to being meat for that beast if she hadn't come to my rescue. I noticed she had ashes all over her body. That must be to cover her scent from the wolf. No wonder it moved past us. I still can't remember where I had seen her. Before I could say another word, she pulled my hand and took me through another route till we got to a clearing. Free from the chase. “You still haven't told me your name,” I said when I noticed her prolonged stare. “Hold on. I actually know you!” She spoke out suddenly. “You are Louisa, the Alpha's daughter. Wait, aren't you guys having some important guests coming? I know cause most of your members were all over town, getting stuff for it. Why are you here?” Well, she is a talker. “I am on an errand,” I answered in a haste. I could sense the blood flow in her veins as they strolled through her body. She is human. How does she know about the vampire wolf lurking in the woods? “On an errand?” she interrupted. “Now? Today? When you're supposed to be having guests? I guess the rumours are true. Your stepmother doesn't like you.” I whirl around and glare at her carefully. There is no need for her to say that to my face. “Whoa,” she exclaims with raised hands at my expression. “I'm sorry, I meant no offence. It's just a known fact, why are you taking it so hard?” “What gives you the right to ask that? Who even are you?” “Oh, wow. My apologies. I'm Erica. Erica Snow, daughter and only child of the mayor, it is a pleasure to meet you,” she says with an outstretched hand. Ah, the mayor’s daughter. Now I remember where I saw the face. It's probably one of those wolf-human gatherings. “Thank you for helping me out,” I said in a haste. She froze. “What's wrong? Are you okay? Did something happen that I didn't know of? Her eyes were closing in gradually. And before I knew it, she fell to the ground. “Erica! Erica!!” ……….
