CHAPTER THREE Ava walked through the streets aimlessly, she didn't know where she was headed, it was just like all the purposes of all her living had been drained off her. “Hey Mam, watch out!” There was a loud scream and chaos as Ava was pushed on the floor by someone. Then the cursing of a man behind the wheel of a car. “These con women are getting blatant every day by day, imagine throwing yourself into an oncoming vehicle just to scam some money from me!I'm definitely calling the police!” The man yelled, bringing out his phone from the pocket of the blue check coloured trousers he was wearing. Ava stared at everything that was happening, her mind barely registering a thing ,she didn't even remember herself walking to this part of the road talking more of throwing herself at an oncoming vehicle. “She definitely does not look like a con woman, she is wearing expensive clothes, look at her jacket it's from a luxurious brand” A young girl said, staring enviously at the black suit jacket that Ava was putting on. “Shut your mouth you little girl , what do you know, people like them wear imitation clothes so as to deceive people” a passerby chided harshly. Very soon the siren of the police car sounded, the driver had called the police and in no time, Ava was handcuffed and led into the police car. © © “I definitely told you that boy isn't good, yet you won't listen now this has happened!” Robert said energetically, gesticulating widely. “Hey watch the road, this is a talk between two women, you men are no good no matter the age or status” Eve said to her husband. The man blinked rapidly and put his hand in the steering, pretending like he didn't hear what his wife said. The husband and wife were just about to have the evening meal after a stressful day at the company when they had received a call from the police station telling them that their daughter had been arrested. “I can't believe that you would dare to kill yourself for a man, he broke up with you just when your wedding is two weeks ago this shows how horrible he is, you should be glad that you didn't even marry him yet” Eve said to her daughter in a comforting voice. Ava leaned on the seat of the car, not saying a word. She hadn't told her parents the real reason why she and Joseph had broken up and this had made them conclude that Joseph was probably cheating on her or had just wanted to play her. “You should have listened when I told you not to be with that boy, I told you that boys like him who grew up in wealth are extremely self centered and look down on people like us, you should have listened to me and gotten married to a man like your father, when I married him, he was just a fabric dyer….” And Eve went on and on, her voice the only sound being heard in the car on their whole journey home. © © Ava sat on the only chair in her room, holding a bowl filled with chips, popcorn and chicken nuggets while watching an emotional movie. The scene playing on the TV was the female lead crying bitterly under the rain and asking the male lead for forgiveness. This scene coincided exactly with the recent happenings in her life. A tear unknowingly rolled down her cheeks, just when she was about to open her mouth and wail, the door of her room swung open and Eve's head peered into the room. “Ava! There's someone here to see you” she said. Ava sprang up from the chair, her eyes wide opened. “Mom? You said what?” She asked. “There's someone here to see you , I think you better dress up quick and …” Eve hadn't even finished talking when Ava pushed her out of the way and ran out, still looking tattered and haggard. “What an insolent child” Eve cursed angrily. Ava ran out of the house, panting, she was hoping to see Joseph standing on the porch of the house, holding a bouquet of rose flowers ,swearing his usual happy blue suit and staring at her with his gentle eyes, telling her that he had forgiven her and wanted the wedding ceremony to go on but shockingly and surprisingly to her, the person she saw on the porch wasn't Joseph rather it was Nathaniel. “What are you doing here?” She asked angrily, folding her arms. Nathaniel's eyes brightened immediately he saw her, but when he saw her tattered looking hair and the faded purple shirt she was wearing coupled with the mismatched pair of slippers , he burst into laughter , a loud and hearty one that got Ava blushing to the roots of her hair. © © “Why do you want to see me?” Ava asked, blowing on the cup of hot steaming cocoa beverage that the waiter had just given to her. They were both seated in a cafe that was just a stone throw away from the neighborhood where Ava's parents lived and Nathaniel had been the one who insisted on them going there. Nathaniel stirred his coffee slowly “I heard you went to meet Joseph yesterday” he started. Ava stilled and stared at him with raised eyebrows “I did and so? He rejected me, we broke up our relationship, aren't you so happy to hear that?” Ava said sarcastically. Nathaniel scoffed at her statement, raising his sharp brows “what gave you that misconception that I am happy about what happened between you too, I might have liked you the first time I saw you but that didn't mean…” “What did you just say Nathaniel? Do you like me? Your cousin's fiance?'' Ava asked, shocked to hear the recent development. “Yes Ava, I have always liked you and that's why I asked you to marry me”
