“Eddie.” “Mm.” “Eddie wake up.” “‘m ‘wake.” Kaeva sighed and shook Eddie’s shoulder. “Wha?” Eddie said, coming to consciousness. He flopped onto his back and blinked at Kaeva in the darkness. Kaeva could see the whites of his eyes and his outline in the moonlight streaming through the skylights. “What? What is it?” Hesitating, Kaeva put his head on his pillow and clutched Eddie’s hand. It was amazing. He could do that anytime he wanted. Had, in fact, done it any time he’d wanted every day until this one. Tomorrow was Eddie’s last day before his final Council meeting. “We’ll have all day to spend together,” Eddie said, reading his mind as usual. “I don’t have to go into town until the evening.” “Right.
