Chapter 12 Eddie Eddie hated drinking alone. He hated doing a lot of things alone: showering, sleeping, but mostly drinking—even if it was just repulsive tea. He especially hated being alone on this, the last day (pun intended) that he should ever be alone. But in the end— We all meet the dark alone. “Get out of my head, Dad,” Eddie whispered. He’d sat at the kitchen table for hours, watching without hope for Kaeva to come back. His cynicism hadn’t let him down. When he finally heard the approach of the ATV that would take him into town for his last shift before the Council meeting, Eddie simply shrugged, slid the chair away from the table, and stood.
