Chapter 1
Mummy! Layla screamed, her eyes going teary, and her little finger snuck up into her mouth as she chewed on it tirelessly, waiting for her mother to come out. Among Kate's triplets, Layla was the nosiest and she was also the youngest and only girl. Her brothers Landon and Luca stood in the opposite direction, staring at her and wondering why she was such a drama queen. “What's going on? What just happened?” Kate asked, walking briskly down the narrow stairs in her pumps and pretty dress. Helen, her friend, would be here in no time to pick her children up and take them to school since she didn't go to work in the morning on Tuesdays. It was one of the benefits of being a nurse; you could stay at home for some days,go to work during your shift, and have lots of privileges, but her job was so hectic that she barely had time to attend any of the children's school functions. Her eyes settled squarely on the cereal that lay on the floor as it darted back to her kids. At six years old, they were a handful, noisy, troublesome, and a little bit tiring, but she loved them. Just then, Helen's car honked, alerting them to her arrival as the kids hopped from their seats, picking up their bag packs. “Good morning, Kate. Oh my goodness, what happened here?” Helen asked, talking on tiptoes in order not to soil her feet. “You could ask your pumpkins; they're definitely grounded, and there's no going back. I'll have to be late for work, and it's really tiring, annoying, and...” “I could help you clean it up; what do you think? So you can catch the bus and be the first one to work; you can't risk your job over a spilled cereal; besides, they're just kids.” “You'll help me do that?” Kate asked, showing gratitude as Helen nodded. “Of course, I'll drop them off at school, then hurry back home and do the needful. You go on.” ~♠~♪~♥~♦~♣~♪ "Kate, you really need to see this; it's going to break headlines, and I'm sure Mr. Graham would love it; he loves things like this.” Allen, a colleague of hers and a friend, was walking over to her table, where she had tons of unfinished work to do. Her eyes darted to his phone as he swiped through some pictures of a man who he claims is getting married to his longtime girlfriend. She froze as her eyes registered the name. “Jeffrey Simon?” She blurted out as Jared spared her a weird look. “And his longtime lover and girlfriend, Princess Theresa, but I don't know why she's referred to as a princess; what do you think?” He asked, smiling at the picture, oblivious to the fact that Kate wasn't smiling. Her chest felt heavy, and tears immediately came to her eyes at the realization of what was happening. After Jeffrey had rejected her without a cause, she'd fled out of hurt and shame. In their clan, it was difficult to see a situation where a mate was rejected; it hadn't happened in a decade until it got to her. She'd been hurt, angry, frustrated, and very unhappy, but after a few months of leaving, she noticed she was pregnant, and till today, she was thankful to her adoptive father, who saw her through thick and thin. “Kate, Kate!” Allen called as she jerked, gasped, and returned to reality. Just now she'd traveled down memory lane and had forgotten what it felt like to be happy in reality and stop dwelling in dreams and past lives. “Care to tell me what you were thinking about?” He asked as she chuckled. “My kids, of course; they're a handful, but they're so cute, I cannot get angry at them.” She replied as he smiled and patted her back. “I'm glad you're happy; it's good to see you smile every time.” As he walked back to his space, she couldn't help but wonder why she felt so uneasy. She didn't understand why this feeling came up, but she knew and felt something was about to happen, so she picked up her phone and dialed her father's number. Mr. Sam picked up the first ring, and you could tell she was smiling and grinning from ear to ear as they spoke on the phone. She explained her uneasiness to him, and he assured her she was just being worried because she didn't get to whisk the children off to school. After the call ended, she felt a little bit relaxed as she began working again. ************************** “The princess is here.” A guard said, bowing slightly and waiting for Jeffrey's order. Jeffrey wasn't a mere prince and alpha; he'd earned his respect by being consistent in serving his people and making sure his masses was comfortable. His father had retired to live in the tower with his mother, claiming it was the best time to leave the pack in his hands. His father had begun his reign in the clan at exactly Jeffrey's age, so he deemed it fit for Jeff to be on the throne. Princess Theresa pushed the door and walked in, her ruby lips shining bright as she smiled and walked over to him, wrapping her arms around him. “You may leave.” The guard retreated as she chuckled. “He wasn't going to leave without your order? How pathetic.” She growled under her breath as he stared at her. He'd be getting married to her, but he felt no connection to her, just a sense of duty to make his clan more powerful and to make his father proud, nothing else. He couldn't even bring himself to accept her as a mate, but they'd been arranged together, and there was nothing he could do about it. “The event planner is doing so well; I just saw this and I had to show you.” She popped her phone out of her bag and swiped a little before shoving the phone in front of him. “You see? It's so nice I can hardly wait till it gets to a month. You'll be mine.” He watched as she spoke to herself, daydreaming about whatever. *We should eat out since you're so excited.” It came out of his mouth before he even had time to think. This was something he always told Kate whenever she was excited. His heart clenched a little, but he pushed it down, suppressing the urge to miss her scent. "Alright, let's go.” * * UNKNOWN LOCATION “It's all cleared; she leaves for work by eight and the children leave by seven; we'll be tracking down her workplace after knowing the children's school. “Good, Keep a tab on her and deliver the news to me on a daily basis.” The huge man said that his mask well concealed his overalls and covered his body neatly. “What about her neighbor? I saw her taking the children to school this morning.” “She's not a problem to us; face our problems squarely and do not mess with the plan; do not tamper with it.” “Sure sir.” “Good, clean all tracks. As soon as I walk out of this place, we must not be noticed.” As he walked out, he smiled, knowing full well Kate would come running to his feet for help, and of course he'd gladly play the hero and make her dance to his tunes. “Pretty girl doesn't know what's coming for her and the kids; before she'll realize it, it'll be too late. Smiling one last time, he got into his car and zoomed off.
