I had found Clarissa pacing back and front by the fountain that evening, clearly restless. At around 11 at night, she was usually in bed, fast asleep, so seeing her wide awake at that hour was disconcerting. “Clarissa?” I called out as I slowly walked down the steps. Even though I had spoken softly, it made her jump. “Oh, it’s you, Miss Shay,” she breathed out.
