Chapter 1
The world went to s**t on January 1st, 2000. The advent of a new age and century saw to the reveal that supernatural creatures weren’t just a myth. They existed and they came with a vengeance. Centuries they had planned on how to take over the world and when humans least expected it, they struck. They had infiltrated every government in the world and this made their plan easier for them. When the clock struck 12am on the 1st day of the new millennia, a virus was released that cut the human population in half. This caused the military of various countries to be weak and thus they had no chance of defending their countries against the invading supernatural forces. The Conquest happened in a mere week and as the new benevolent rulers, a cure for the virus was released, but with a side effect – the birth rate for humans reduced drastically. This was a way of curbing the growth of the specie.
One would have thought that they’d enslave the human race but no, that didn’t happen. Instead, a curfew was created to ensure the smooth running of the society, as well as for the safety of humans – especially from the hands of nocturnal species. Of course, said curfew wasn’t adhere to by many people and that came with consequences. This was why I was running to my apartment at a high speed.
My breath came out in visible puffs of steam as I ran like my life depended on it. Honestly, when one looked at it, it kind of did. It was almost 9pm, a time for curfew for humans. If I had had a supernatural being by my side, I wouldn’t have worried too much about my safety – but unfortunately I don’t have any. Times like this made me curse my shy and introverted nature.
This was the first time in a while since something like this has happened. Sure, I’ve gotten overtime now and then and get home unarmed but there had been a strings of deaths lately. Human deaths. Some of them have been gutted or drained dry of blood. I wonder if it had something to do with the upcoming selection of a new High Alpha for the country.
I came to a screeching halt when I came across a group of Low Level Vampires standing some few feet away from me. Some of them noticed my presence and my feet started moving. I made to sprint through the alleyway by the corner – which would make the journey to my apartment a little longer but I need to get out of there. Dread pooled my stomach and my hand clenched the strap of my handbag tight. I once again came to a sudden halt when I saw one of them in front of me, his lips spread in a wide grin and his fangs on show.
“Now, what’s the rush, pretty face?”
I turned around when I heard a sound coming from behind me and I saw the remaining four LLVs standing behind me with wide grins of their own – their eyes shining with sick interest.
I could hear my heart beating fast in my easy, and as these people were vampires, I know they could too. I gulped and then took in a deep breath. One thing about Vampire nose is that no matter the level, they could smell emotions like fear when it became pungent on an individual. I regulated my emotions, begging my erratic heart to calm down.
“If you can’t tell, it’s almost curfew time and I really need to get going.” I said with a disarming smile. “Now, if you’d excuse me-“
The Vampire blocking the way was suddenly right in my face, looking down at me. I stumbled back, the reigns on my fear shaking a little. I wanted to bolt out of there but one wring move would see me with a broken limb or two. Low Level Vampires sometimes had no regards for the low like the High Vampires. They were a bane on the Elder Vampires who wanted nothing more than to eradicate them all.
“Now, now, pretty. Why don’t you stay and have some fun with use?”
Gods above, his breath smelt horrible. It was as if something died in his mouth.
“Thank you, but I’m not interested.” I tried to move to the side but he caught my arm, his fingers wrapping tightly around my forearm, and raised her arm up- causing her to yell in pain and surprise at the action.
“Who said you have any choice in this, pretty?” The Vampire sneered.
“I- the Board of America Vampire Affairs would punish you all for this!” I yelled out, putting on a brave face.
“Oh~ The Board of America Vampire Affairs will punish us~” One of the Vampires behind me mockingly said, whilst the others snickered in amusement.
“Oh, pretty. When we’re done with you, no one would even find your corpse.”
Fear like no other gripped me. I made a noise of disgust and panic as the vampire holding me leaned in to drag his tongue against my cheek. I closed my eyes in fear as he got close to my neck, baring his fangs in a motion to bite.
Suddenly, his weight was off me. My eyes flew open in surprise and I watched as he was thrown against a dumpster, his back making impact with the edge of the dumpster and the loud sound of bone breaking filled the alleyway. The Vampire yelled in pain and behind me, I heard the rest snarled in shock and in readiness to fight – no doubt their claws at the ready. But I didn’t care. All I could focus on was the towering figure who had on a black trench coat.
Gold with a hue of Sliver. Those were the eyes that bore down at me, staring straight into my soul.
