Chapter 8

924 Words
"I'm here to take Sarah home," Damian said. Sophia ignored Damian and coldly commanded, "Sarah, get out of the car!" Sarah stepped out of the car, her face still flushed, and she didn't dare meet Sophia's eyes. "Come home with me!" Sophia grabbed Sarah's hand. "Sophia, what are you doing? I haven't even said goodbye to Damian yet… Damian, I'm heading home first. See you tomorrow!" Damian smiled, waved his hand, and shouted, "Alright, see you tomorrow!" Ethan and Damian exchanged glances. Ethan said, "Go home early tonight. Don't make your parents worry." At that moment, Sophia realized Ethan hadn't followed them. She turned and yelled, "Husband, what are you doing? Come home!" Damian wiped the lipstick mark from the corner of his mouth and sneered, "How old are you to talk to me like that? If it weren't for Sarah, I wouldn't even bother dealing with you. A grown man with arms and legs, yet relying on a woman—don't you find that embarrassing?" After saying that, Damian raised his middle finger at Ethan and walked away. Sarah shook off Sophia's hand, turned back, and looked at Ethan. "Ethan, what did you just say to Damian?" Ethan replied, "Nothing. I just told him to go home early so his parents wouldn't worry." Sarah crossed her arms and said, "Whether he goes home or not is his business. Can you stop meddling in other people's affairs?" Sophia raised an eyebrow, clearly displeased. "Sarah, why are you talking to your brother-in-law like that? And besides, what were you two doing in the car? Don't you feel ashamed?" Sarah scoffed and turned away. "Ashamed of what? We weren’t doing anything strange. Every couple gets affectionate. Don't you and Ethan do the same?" Sophia snapped, "At least pick the right place! You were both sitting in a car at the entrance of the neighborhood. People are passing by, and the neighbors can see. Don't you feel embarrassed?" "It's late at night—no one saw us. I don’t feel like arguing with you." Sarah turned and ran inside the house. Ethan tried to calm Sophia. "My wife, don’t be mad. Sarah is still young—she’ll learn in time." Sophia shook her head in frustration. "Sarah has been spoiled since childhood and just graduated from college. She’s like a child who doesn’t understand the world yet. I'm afraid she’ll suffer in the future." Remembering how Damian pretended to be polite at the Whitmore family house earlier that day, then seeing his arrogance just now, Ethan felt the man was two-faced. But Sarah and their parents adored Damian. If Ethan spoke the truth, they would only scold him and accuse him of stirring up trouble. "They're getting engaged, aren't they? Just let it be. We don't want Sarah thinking we're trying to stop her," Ethan said. Sophia looked worried. "When I first met Damian today, I thought he was a good man. But after seeing his behavior just now, I'm certain he's not the right one for Sarah." After Sarah got home, she was worried her sister would report everything to their parents. So, she acted first. As soon as Ethan and Sophia entered the house, their mother, Sonia, was already waiting with a serious expression. "Sophia, Ethan, come here!" Sophia stepped forward, confused. "What is it, Mom?" Sonia asked, "Did you see Sarah and Damian when you came home? Did you interfere in their relationship?" "Mom, it's not what you think…" Sophia tried to explain, but Sonia clearly wasn’t interested in listening. "No need to explain. Sarah already told me. She and Damian were just talking at the gate—no outsiders saw them. What’s so shameful about that? If anything is shameful, it’s my unemployed son-in-law!" Sonia shot a glare at Ethan. She continued in a mocking tone, "We can't expect much from you two. The Whitmore family's future depends on Sarah and Damian. With Damian as our son-in-law, we can be proud! In the future, your father and I can rely on them. We certainly can't rely on you two." Hearing those words, Sophia felt a deep sadness. "Mom, I’m not trying to stop Sarah from being with Damian. I'm just worried she'll end up suffering." Sarah scoffed and said, "Suffer from what? Damian treats me well. Whatever I want, he buys for me. In fact, I’ll even ask him to find a job for Ethan." Sonia immediately chimed in, "See? Damian cares so much about Sarah! Ethan, if Damian offers you a job, take it immediately and stop lazing around at home all day." "Alright, Mom," Ethan replied flatly. Sophia’s eyes welled up with tears. She turned and ran into their bedroom. Ethan didn’t say much and followed her to comfort her. "I'm sorry, my love. This is all my fault. Mom’s anger is directed at me, and you're getting dragged into it," Ethan said. Sophia took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. "Maybe I’m just meddling too much. If Sarah loves Damian that much, let it be. Besides, Damian promised to find you a job. You should work hard and prove something to Mom," she said. Ethan agreed, though deep down, he doubted Damian would give him a decent job. *** The next morning, Sophia left early for work. Ethan cleaned up the house, then went to the market to buy vegetables—his daily routine. After that, he returned home. As he was chopping vegetables in the kitchen, the door suddenly creaked open, followed by the voice of his mother-in-law.
