Theo woke up miserable. The only way he could describe it was the feeling of a hang over. His head was throbbing and his chest still burned when he breathed. He laid in bed staring at the ceiling. He should be happy right now, ready to propose to his chosen mate, but instead he was in pain because his tether to his fated mate has yet to sever. A groan escaped his lips and both hands pulled at his face in frustration before rubbing his eyes. He felt movement as Mira shifted and cuddled up to him. Her touch started to feel like she was made out of wolfsbane.
"Morning handsome." She said as she propped herself up and slightly over him. Her short hair framed her face as it fell towards Theo. "What's wrong?" She noticed the pain in his eyes, it was very unusual for him. Sitting herself up and brushing her hair behind her ears, Mira suddenly went into protection mode. "Whats the matter Theo. Why do you look like someone stabbed you with silver?" She started to examine his body for any signs of poisoned veins.
As mush as Theo wanted to push her away, she forced himself to smirk. "Nothing my love," the word love seemed to burn as he said it. "I may have caught a cold while out. I'm going to see the doctor and then I need to speak to Elder Edith. I'll be fine my love. Get some rest I will see you later." He sat up and kissed her forehead. He wasn't fully lying to her, he was going to see the pack elder for sure, but the doctor may or may not be part of his plan depending on what the elder had to say.
After breakfast he made his way to the elders cottage. She chose to live in a small cottage just at the edge of the woods, even though she had her own suite in the pain pack estate. She outranked Theo in some of his Alpha duties, but rarely needed to step in. She was a kindly old woman who was wiser than most. Wolves may have lived a bit longer than humans, but elders were special, they were chosen to live even longer. Their duty was to uphold traditions, make sure the alpha didn't make dangerous mistakes, and to keep the stories alive. This particular elder was also very good at her herbal studies and provided special medicines for those in need. Elder Edith was her name. She was born into the Blood Moon pack, her father being from it and her mother from another. Her mother's mother came from a coven and passed on her knowledge of herbs to both. This is why she chose the quiet cottage, to be able to gather her herbs herself. Edith once being a pack doctor herself, didn't mind the now quiet life.
Before Theo could even get to the gate, Elder Edith was there waiting for him. She could sense something wasn't right and ushered him in with haste. "Theodulf, why do you look in pain." She got straight to the point as she poured them some tea. She had a feeling she was going to have a guest today and had already set it up.
"I found my mate." He decided not to beat around the bush himself. "I thought she was human, but when I rej-"
"You what?!" Elder Edith cut him off. "Yoi didn't even give her a chance? You know a fated mate luna is stronger for the pack." Her voice was sharp, meaner than she had ever been with Theo.
"Yes I am aware, but like I was saying she was human and I didn't want to risk it." He looked down at his cup of tea, his fingers running through his hair. "I rejected her because I didn't want to put the pack into any harm, you know what happened last time one of us mated with a human. They can't really be trusted anymore."
Theo was referring to what had happened when he was a child, during his father's reign. The beta at the time had mated with a human. Everything was fine until several humans part of an organization to kill all magical beings attacked. Turns out this woman was part of it and took advantage of the mate bond to plan the attack. They lost a lot of their pack that day, and it took years to recover. They still only trust a select few humans these days.
Theo felt a hand on his shoulder. "My dear Theodulf, they aren't all bad. I do understand why you made this decision though. I'm just worried what will happen when Delmira finds her mate also." Theo nodded, he worried about it too, but he was sure Mira wouldn't do that to him, not once she took on the role of Luna that is. She wouldn't do it to the pack. "Now you said you thought she was human. Do you think she isn't? Did the bond not sever?" Concern washed over her face. She stepped away from Theo and sat across from him.
"That's the thing. She smelt like a human, but also of flowers and woods. I assume the other parts were part of the aroma mates give off to attack. There was an unknown scent in there, but it was buried deep down." He took a sip of his tea. "I figured it would hurt a little when I rejected her, but I also know it wasn't supposed to last long. There rules are different then ours, no need for both to complete it." He watched Elder Edith as her concern turned to confusion. "The pain I felt last night was bad, then I couldn't even sleep for a hours. My wolf was too busy causing me a pounding headache." Theo rubbed one of his temples, feeling the headache return with full force.
Edith grabbed a sachet from a basket behind her and placed it into Theos hand. "Rub this on it, it will help calm your wolf so you can think." She watched as he did so. "Now this definitely doesn't sound normal. A human bond would have severed immediately. So this is no ordinary human. Do you remember anything strange about her?"
Theo felt relief almost instantly after rubbing the sachet on his forehead. He held it there as he continued to talk. "Yeah, she looked up instantly at me when I think she felt the bond. Her eyes were no ordinary blue either. They glistened under the full moon, like they were the moon reflecting off of a lake on a clear night." Theo stopped himself, why was he describing her like that. Yeah her eyes were odd, but they ment nothing to him. His wolf growled in his mind as he thought that, he obviously she ment everything to him. "Other than that she seemed like a normal human being."
Elder Edith stared for a moment before getting up. She scanned her books and took on of the shelf, scanning the pages. After several minutes and many books flipped through, Elder Edith sighed and looked over at Theo. "You need to bring her here Theodulf." Was all she said. He tried to argue and get a real answer, but she shushed him and made him leave.
Theo quickly mind links his top three men to meet him in his office. He briefly explains what happened and his talk with Elder Edith. "Wait so your mate is a human?" Bishop asked confused.
"Was it the blue eyed girl?" Elliot asked, his voice void of emotion. A three men looked at him confused. Theo nodded, knowing Elliot would have felt a Luna bond instantly. "That would explain why I've had a migraine since we left the human town." Elliot was the gamma of the pack, with his pointed position he is in charge of the Lunas safety. Before the mate bond his only tether was to the acting current luna, Theos mother.
Even more confused Bishop shifted his attention from Elliot to Theo. "So we are to kill this human?" He still didn't understand the plan all too well. With that comment he could feel Elliot burning a hole into his skull. Elliots connection should have severed also, but with it not he still had a sense protection over her.
Theo sighed and placed his head against his hands. "No, not yet. We are only to retrieve her so Elder Edith can check her out. If she is human we see why the connection isn't severed. If she is wolf we question why she is hiding."
Michael, the Delta of the group, was the first to stand. He mind linked someone to bring round the car so they could leave immediately. "I got us a room at the inn just in case. The town isn't big, but it's big enough that she might take a moment to find." Bishop was next to stand as he was on his phone making arrangements.
Elliot was last to stand to leave. "So what about Mira?" He asked concerned. He did have an emotional attachment to her since she was supposed to his chosen luna.
"She is still my mate, and she will still be your luna. This girl is just a momentary step back...... I hope." The last part Theo mumbled in hopes that is wasn't heard. Elliot bowed his head at Theo and also left the room.
