CHAPTER 1
"Please, Mum, don't leave me, you are the only one I have," Lily said amidst her sobs.
"I am sorry ma'am but I am afraid that for your mother to live, she would have to go through a heart transplant." Doctor Charles said feeling sorry for poor Lily.
"You have said that before, Doctor, but where do you want me to get such an amount of money from?" Where? " Lily questioned the doctor, still sobbing.
"Am sorry ma'am, but we have done our best for now, I advise you to let her rest as crying would make things worse for your health and your mum as well" And with that, the doctor turned and walked out of the room, leaving the hopeless Lily heartbroken and alone.
Lily has always been a precocious daughter to her Mother because her Mother was the only one she had, her father had died before her 10th birthday and now her Mother, the only one she had, was on her sick bed and was diagnosed with a Coronary heart disease which requires a heart transplant to cure.
But where would she get the money for the heart transplant? Where would she get a million dollars from? She had no job and no one to run to.
She was a passionate artist but so far, she has only found closed doors and rejections as no famous art exhibit wanted to sponsor her art because she had no money to pay for her art to be placed on their exhibit.
As she thought about all this, she felt betrayed by God,
"God, Did I do anything to deserve this?" She shouted.
She was still contemplating how hard life has been for her when her phone rang.
Due to her inability to get a new phone for herself, her phone's screen was cracked in various places, so she wasn't able to get a clear look at the caller ID.
But as she picked up the call, she recognised the voice of the caller, it was her best friend Sarah.
"Hello, Sandra," Lily said.
"You need to come home right now, there is an urgent situation at your apartment. " Sandra yelled over the call.
"What's that Sandra, Is there any problem?" Lily asked, frightened by what Sandra said.
"Yes, Lily, there is a problem, your landlord Mr Daniel is at your house with some of his men and they are throwing out your belongings. " Sandra said, yelling.
Why now? Lily asked no one, in particular, she hasn't paid her rent in six months, and she had no right to be angry with her landlord, But why does it have to be now that her landlord will chase her out?
"Where would she call home now? " She thought.
As she thought about all this, Sandra who was still on the call shouted "Are you still there, Lily" jolting her back to her senses.
"Yes I am here, I will be there in a short time," Lily said, cutting the call.
As she cut the call, she looked over at her mum who was still in her deep sleep, tears dropping from her eyes, she muttered "Mum, I promise to get you out of here".
And with that, she left for the place she called her home.
As she moves out of the hospital, she boards a cab with the little change she had.
While she was in the car, The day's events started running through her mind and a myriad of emotions ran through her heart, so many things had happened within the day, first, her art has been rejected by the famous art exhibits saying that they could not bear to promote her art if she didn't have any money to pay to them, secondly, her mother's disease has now taken the worst turn and she has no money to pay for any heart transplant, lastly she has been called by her best friend that her landlord has thrown her out because she was behind on her rent for six months.
She has never regretted being poor in her life, but she regretted being poor today.
"How cool would it be if she was able to provide for his mum", and "How cool would it be if she was able to have a house of her own?' " She thought.
As she thought about all this, a new set of tears started falling from her eyes again.
"What a world!" was the only thing she muttered to say.
"Excuse me, ma'am", we have arrived at your location", the cab driver said, jolting her back to her senses.
"Ohh thanks, here is your money "and with that, Lily alighted from the vehicle.
Just as she alighted from the cab, she looked over and saw her best friend Sandra in front of her apartment and her belongings scattered all over the place.
Forgetting about what has occurred in the hospital, she ran with her last strength to Sandra, as Sandra cited her bed friend Lily running towards her, she knew exactly that this was the time Lily needed her the most.
Without Hesitation, Sandra opened her arms for Lily who had no choice but to fall into Sandra's arms crying her eyes out.
" Why has life been so cruel to me Sandra,? "Why can't I have a normal life filled with joy and happiness?" Lily asked in between her sobs.
Sandra knew exactly what Lily was passing through, life has been so tough for her best friend, but what could she do?
She wasn't God who had the power to perform miracles.
The only thing Sandra could bring herself to say was "Lily, why don't you come to live with me" unsure of where that came from, but she knew that Lily had no one else except her.
"You would do that for me? " Lily asked in her dim voice.
"Come on Lily, what are friends for?" Sandra stated.
"Thanks" was all Lily muttered and with that, the duo went ahead to pick up Lily's belongings for them to head over to Sandra's house.
Lily stood up, determined to make a way come through but with fear of what awaits her in the future.
Would she be able to endure what the future holds for her?
