“It is hereby Adjudged that Mrs Carolina is guilty of the attempt on Kate’s life. As such, you are hereby sentenced to 5 years imprisonment, Mrs Carolina, pursuant to the law of this jurisdiction.” The judge declared gruffly but I remained unfazed as I stood in the counter, staring at just one person in the court Audience - Damien.
There he was with his slimy mistress, Kate, staring back at me, his gray eyes looking so innocent like he didn’t connive with his mistress to throw me in jail.
It was through the past three days that I finally realize the monster I married. He posed as a witness and accused me of being guilty of stabbing Kate. I had nothing up against them. Kate even presented a cctv footage that portrayed us fighting with each other but even when it didn’t reveal the stabbing part, I still couldn’t win the case. And it was all because of Damien. All because he posed as the witness.
He didn’t even care about our kids who didn’t want their mother go to jail and now staring at them in the audience as they had tears on there face, hurt so much like hell.
I could see in their eyes that they were hurting badly as they watch a security guard clip an handcuff around my wrist. A tear escaped my eyes. I hated Damien. I hate him so much and I swear he is going to pay for this.
He is going to bawl before my feet and beg me to have mercy on him but it would be too late.
“Court dismiss!” The judge further announced and I was dragged out of the courtroom like a criminal.
I was taken into custody. I went over the prison processing such as medical screening, finger-printing and photographing. I was made to wear the datianee custom and was led to one of prison by a warder.
“Behave!” The warder growled as he pushed me into room and locked the gates. I was met with three inmates with the same uniforms as me. They all had stern faces as they sits at different corners of the bed. I thought they would make trouble but thankfully they didn’t even say a word to me as I went to an empty bed I assumed was mine. Only one of them tried to converse with me but I only greeted and didn’t speak much.
Later that same day, I was reclining at my own quarter of the cell room, reflecting about everything that had happened for past few days and how I’m going to become an ex-convict, when a warder came to announce to me that I had a visitor. So soon? Curious, I followed the warder to the visiting section and When I got there, my blood ran cold.
Damien was sitted on one of the chairs. What the hell is he doing here?
“What do you want Damien?” I fired at him as I walked closer to him, while the warder gave us some space.
I was shaking with so much rage and meanwhile Damien only stared at me without a word. His eye darken, having some softness to it and was that pity I could read? It made my skin crawl even more.
“I want us to talk.” He finally said quietly as he adjusted himself on the chair.
“We have nothing to talk about.” I snapped and wanted to leave when he did something that shook the living hell out of me.
I had almost thought he came here cause his conscience was pricking already or something but I was wrong. He brings out the divorce paper from before and asked me to sign it. Apparently, he was here for the divorce. What a sick bastard.
“I’m sure you already know we are done. But for formality sake let’s just make things official. For everyone’s peace.”
“Everyone’s peace?! Really? Why don’t you admit that the only reason you are so much after my signature is for your own selfish reasons? You know no one will want to do business with an irresponsible man who couldn’t legally divorce his wife and marry another. If you really care about other people then why didn’t you tell the court the truth?” I rasped angrily and he just stared at me without saying a word.
“That,” I continued. “just go to show to what extent you would go in get what you want! You would trade your wife freedom over just a million dollar contract, not even caring how this will affect your kids—“
“Don’t you dare bring my kids into this carolina!” Damien thundered. His eyes dark red as he stood up. “It may interest you to know that I actually came here for us to make a deal!”
His voice suddenly fall dead as he said the last word. I watch with a scowl as he approached me till we were just inch apart and then he spoke again, “I could actually help you get out of here. And in return, you will sign the divorce document and get out of my life. Forget about the kids too.”
He facial expression soften as he gazes at me, his eyes glimmering as if they were pleading and I just found myself laughing. I laughed so hard like a maniac and without saying a word to him, I brushed past him. I walked toward the table where the documents and pen was then I scribbled my signature on it. His eyes followed my every move. And when was done I stood up to face him.
“I do not need your filthy help to come out of here Damien. If there’s anything you should do that’s to tell the court the truth and trust me when I say this, I’ll get out of your life for good while I take my kids away. I’m their mother, you’ve no right to take them away.”
“Then get ready to rot in here.”he scoffed as he stashed up the document papers from the table, then he walked out on me. So, easily.
One week later.
Just one week in prison has been like an endless torture to me. I completely lost hope that I would come out of here alive. The bad food. The bully from fellow inmates. The hard labor. And polluted environment. Everything was already making me sick and painful part was fact, that the people who put me here were living a free and happy life out there.
I badly wanted to make them pay but I was helpless. I felt all alone and Abaddoned as no one came to visit me. I began to regret my past. If only I hadn’t taken a drastic decision, I wouldn’t have ever met Damien I guess. Or as a pauper. I would have been the daughter of the richest man in the courtry today. Damien doesn’t even measure up and would never.
Howeve guess fate has it own ways. I was inside my ward today, when a warder came to tell me that I had a visitor. I couldn’t ever guessed who was. It certainly couldn’t be Damien.
And when I followed the waiter to the visiting room, I was right, it wasn’t Damien but it was someone I had never expected would be here.
I was dumbfounded. I thought I was seeing wrong but more I stared at him, the more reality dawned on me. It was him.
He was still the same as six years ago when I last saw him. Charming with those sexy deep-seated emerald eyes. Strong jawline. Perfectly carved cheekbone. He was also quite muscular and tall. With an intimidating stance that emitted all shade of a powerful and multi-billionaire. Which he was. His outfit and grooming clearly even revealed it. He was on Louis Vuitton suit, one of the rarest in the country and worth millions of dollars. Even his shoes… lets not go over the list. Shane Hugo is an influential man and the country knows it. More like the Hugo family.
“Carolina,” his gentle and soothing voice pulled me out of oblivion.
Of course, It was Shane Hugo.
