Chapter 26
Day 700
The workers were in the fields plowing the soil for another planting. The rains had gone at last. Being this close to the equator, the water-soaked foliage in the mountains made the air heavy and thick. Cam still was haunted by her vision of Maggie’s visit. She saw it every day. Nothing seemed able to make it disappear.
Suddenly Maya screamed as Beatrice fainted from the heat. Everyone turned toward her, a couple of guards rushing to her aid. Cam was at the edge of the field near the wooded area. Without a second thought, she seized her chance and darted into the thicket. She ran quickly and it was several minutes before she heard the shouts and gunfire of the guards who realized she was missing.
