Chapter One: A Promise.
A Few Years Ago...
The little girl sat down under the old oak tree and watched as her sister ran off to play with the other kids. As shy as she was, it was hard for her to make friends but it came to her sister so easily. She had cried the car ride over here and now she currently had hiccups. She hated that her sister left her alone. Just thinking about it started to bring tears to her eyes and the next thing she knew, the tears started flowing again. She wanted to go home to mommy and daddy.
"Hey, are you done yet?" The girl looked up and watched as a boy who looked to be a little older than her made his way to her. He stopped in front of her and started to kick at the ground causing a cloud of dirt to swirl around them. "They will never play with such a little baby."
"I don't want to play with them. I want my mommy and daddy. I want to go home." The little girl pulled her knees up to her chest and slowly began to rock back and forth, trying not to make any eye contact. She looked past him as all the other kids began shouting and chasing each other. How she longed to join them in the fray but was too scared to.
The young boy shook his head and sat next to the girl. Her long brown hair was pulled back in pigtails and the pink ribbons danced in the breeze. Her cheeks were puffy from crying and he watched as the girl wiped her nose against her pink sleeve. Her eyes were the color of emeralds with a speck of gold in them and they were as wide as saucers as she watched the other kids run and play. He had been observing the others today with his friends when he noticed her sitting all alone. At first he wasn't going to bother with her, but once she let out that wail, he couldn't help but be a little annoyed.
"Well, if you aren't going to join us, then I'm going to head back now." As he went to stand, he felt the slightest tug on his shirt. The little boy looked down at her small pale fingers and was taken aback when she looked up at him and shyly said, "Will you stay with me? Will you promise not to leave me?"
The boy smiled to himself as he sat back down beside the girl. "As long as it takes."
Now:
"You know maybe if you took better care of yourself like me, you wouldn't be as ugly as you are now."
Karissa sucked in the air through her teeth as one of the girls boots made contact with her ribs. She had just been on her way to work on the chores for the upcoming festivites when she ran into Mallory and her possie. They had been at this for what seemed like an hour now, calling her every profanity in the book. Karina could only imagine what her sister had told them now.
"Aww poor little Karissy! You aren't going to cry are you?" Mallory sneered down at her while the two girls on either side of her snickered. Mallory was the soon to be Alpha's current fling. Her baby blue eyes were full of hatred and before Karissa could say anything, she was slapped aross her face. She had no idea why she had caught Mallory's attention, but if she knew anything than Marissa was to blame and there would be hell to pay.
"I don't understand why they keep a low life like you around anyway. But I guess someone has to clean up around here. I mean, it's obvious why I am here since I'm going to be the future Luna. And as your future Luna, you better be counting your days, Karissy! As soon as I take over you are as good as dead."
Little do you know, I am counting the days you snob, Karissa thought to herself and she watched the three she devils walked away. Karissa let out a long sigh as she made an attempt to lift herself off of the ground. Her rib didn't feel broken but she knew it was going to be sore tomorrow. Since her parents died to a rogue attack, she and her twin sister moved here to live with her aunt when they were just five years old. Unlike her, the pack took a liking towards Marissa, since she did tell them that it was her fault that the rougue's found them in the first place. Of course, everyone believed what they wanted and since then, Karissa was treated worse than the rogues that were kept in the cellars below the pack house. Her aunt and uncle had disapproved of how they rest of the pack has treated her all of these years but of course would and could never go against their alpha. The Blue River pack was known to be rutheless and Karissa wouln't watch anyone else suffer because of her. So since then she kept her head down and took to cleaning and doing the chores around the pack.
Everyone was in good spirits since the soon to be Alpha's birthday was in a week. Talk had been abuzz about the upcoming party to find his mate and make Grayson the new Alpha. There was so much to do and during these times was when Karissa could relax and enjoy herslef the most. Little attention was spent on her and she didn't mind at all. Coming in at 5'2" and weighing a whopping 165 pounds, Karissa never thought of herself as mouth watering, but she didn't need a mate to tell her that either. Looking around, Karissa finally decided that it was best to head on home instead of finishing up her chores. One day, I will be free, she thought to herself as a cool breeze rustled her short pixie cut. One day soon...
