Prologue
4 years ago "Perimeter, clear going in - over" May spoke clearly into her headpiece, to her trainee on the other end of the line. She silently and effortlessly made her way inside the building through the darkness of night. She used the small ledges of the bricks to launch herself up to the third level, sliding inside using a small opened window. Any normal person who would look at the building would just consider it to be a regular old office building - and even on the smaller side especially compared to the intense sky scrapers in New York City. It's red brick and 1960's architecture gave it a vintage and unassuming appearance, and it didn't capture any sort of attention from the thousands of people who walked past it daily. Lucky for them, for if they were paying attention to this unassuming red brick building they would have noticed that not a single soul entered during the day. It was owned by the Knightingale Order, A house of vampires who had been residing in this facility for around a century now. There were many like it around the city, in fact in most cities around the world. There was not just the Knightingale Order, but the Ever Knights and The Undying Bloods, just to name a few. All orders were the result of the first vampire siblings trying to dominate a control center of the world with their bloodline. Originally, this created an intense war, killing many vampires and humans in the process. Over the years, though, treaties had been signed so that different vampire factions could, for the most part, coexist. That looked to be all in the past now, as something had just desecrated dozens of vampires, seeming to wipe out an entire Order. This hadn't occurred since the civil war over 100 years ago. May scanned the floor, feeling for any life or any vampires near her. Just like she had determined outside, they were too late. Dozens of vampires lay dead across the floor looking like they were a part of an intense battle where all high ranking officials of the order were now a pile of dust. May swallowed as she knew this meant dire consequences for the human citizens of the city. Hundreds would die. Vampires without their sire alive would turn feral. Feeding and killing anything and everything they could. "s**t Adam, it’s a blood bath. We are going to have a lot of work to do these coming nights. It's not going to be easy - over." "f**k I was really hoping that wasn't the case. Do you really think it's linked to that girl Lance is holding at his headquarters? - Over" Adam replied. "I'm not sure, but the timing is too much of a coincidence ". She was about to tell Adam to come in and start getting a body count when she heard something. A groan coming from a room at the end of the floor. I must be hearing things, or maybe it's a phone or something, because I can't sense anything living in this building, she thought. The groan came again. It was a man in pain. At least that is what it sounded like. May drew her pistol. "Someone is here, hold your ground" May whispered in her headpiece. The lights from the city came through the windows sparingly, lighting some of the dark corridors and rooms. Not that she needed it though, she could see very well without light. She turned the corner at the end of the long corridor, pistol drawn and fingers on the trigger. "Go on do it! You f*****g disgusting devil spawn!" An older gentleman spat at her, his British accent coming across very strongly. He lay out on the floor, his legs crushed under a steel safe that had been pulled out of the wall. Rubble and debris and three dead vampires sprawled out across the room. Each vampire in a different twisted position as they each had been brutally murdered. One was even missing his arms. She didn't inspect them much further though. She was much more curious about this, being she couldn't smell or sense at all. "What are you?" She crouched down so she was more at his eye level. "f**k off!" He yelled at her, full of hate, at a level that was rare for her to come across. His silver hair and wrinkles gave away his age. Early to mid-sixties, if he is a human, May thought. He was dressed in black with a bullet-proof vest and he was covered in blood. Although what kind she couldn't tell. He had scratches all over him. A lot were deep and were obviously defensive wounds. May sized up the size of the safe. His legs were completely crushed. If she were to move it he would bleed out extremely quickly. At least he would if he was human. "Get away from me!" He yelled at her, his voice deep and threatening. Her movement was swift and fast. Although the old man did react by pulling back from her hand, he was too slow. And May was able to get some of the blood from his face. She brought it to her mouth and winced at all the information that it gave her as it hit her tongue. It was human blood, specifically a 64-year-old European Male, with a slight magical quality. Barely noticeable, but it was there. Perhaps a history of witches in his family tree. She thought. But there it was, that bitter after-taste of the vampire virus it was in deep now. He would turn by the morning. May sighed and checked the number of bullets in her pistol. She hated this part. But the rules were clear and necessary. If any human who had the vampire virus in their blood and their sire is dead or assumed dead needs to be put to death immediately. Vampires without a clear link to the original source - also known as the first vampire. Would go feral, killing indiscriminately and just because they could. May had seen it happen with her own eyes, it was just awful. Death was definitely the better option. Although it didn't make it any easier, especially when the human victim had no idea what had happened to them. Not all victims that were fed on by a vampire would turn. The vampire needed to pass on their blood to them. Normally, they would cut their own tongue with their fangs and then the blood would infuse into the victim when they bit them. In this case, it looked like the blood of the slashed vampire got into the wounds of the man. Not wanted by either party, but a consequence regardless. "f*****g disgusting! What are you going to do shoot me! Surely not! Don't make me laugh! You blood-sucking vampire!" He raged at her. "I'm impressed with your fighting spirit Sir. You don't have much time left. That safe has completely crushed your legs. Your adrenaline is the only thing currently keeping you alive. Don't waste it cursing me out. I will keep you alive. But only until the virus starts to win against your immune system." She said, staying completely calm. " You will not be turning me I would rather die!" "I won't turn you. You have my word." "I would never trust the word of a piece s**t like you." He snarled "If I had my guns you would be just like the rest of them." "You flatter yourself if you think I'm at the same level as these Muppets." She kicked the arm of the dead vampire with her black combat boots. "What level are you?" He tried to shuffle to get his left arm free from the safe. "The more you move the quicker you will die." She stated. "Adam, a male human victim - 64 years of age European descent, possibly distantly related to witches. Unable to receive lifesaving support in current position also has vampiric virus present in his system. Can you please commence the body count of the building? And attempt to locate the Duchess? - Over" May voiced into her earpiece. "That's sad. I hate when that happens - please don't make me be the one to pull the trigger. - Over" Adam responded. "No, he is about to bleed out so it wouldn't be wise for you to get too close. Let me know when you have completed the task previously stated-Over." "Thank you, Yes I will - Over" Adam said. "How do you know that about me? About my family line?" The man grunted. "I'll tell you if you tell me what you are and what you are doing?" May said. "I'm a vampire hunter. Obviously are you stupid! And purging this disgusting plague that has taken hold on this city." "A British vampire hunter, hey- I must say your reputation proceeds you. Since there are no vampire orders in the United Kingdom and there haven't been for decades. I admire your work. Your blood has a micro percentage of magic, not enough to produce spells, but it is there." "You're proud of our work?" He grunted disapprovingly. "Why would you approve that I slaughted hundreds of your kind?" "O because I was created with pretty much the same purpose. I'm just not so extreme with my goals. Vampires can coexist with humans they just need to be kept in order." "Ugh the Krsnk! " He groaned. "What a joke! Blessed by the earth mother I don't f*****g believe it, there is no way the earth mother would waste any time or resources on something like you! Vampires can't coexist with humans. They are parasites that need to be wiped from the earth! Tell me do you think you are actually doing any good for society or just prolonging human suffering by letting your own kind hunt us down like dogs!" "I just know that seeing a survivor continue on with their life, unchanged knowing that if I hadn't intervened they wouldn't be walking the earth anymore. Fills me with the same warmth I feel when I see the sunrise." "Don't talk utter nonsense! Vampires can't see the sunrise". He cursed, still full of rage. "I'll tell you what" May walked to the other side of the room, where a small window was looking out over the city. She removed the frame and glass completely so there was nothing separating them from the cold air of the night. "Let's watch it together." "That would be nice, to see my last sunrise." May was taken back as his tone had shifted into that of a friendlier one. "Don't get it twisted! If I had my way I would have your decapitated head in my hands and be off home to track down your sire! One of the 4!" "You have a way to track them down?" That comment peaked May's interest. To have something that could track down a vampire off their blood was unheard of and incredibly useful. Especially for her line of work. She would be lying if she said she wasn't curious to know where the man was who turned her was. His name was Traian and he was the oldest of the 4 siblings who were first turned by the original vampire. It was said that Traian couldn't cope with what his kind were doing to the human race and pledged his life to the earth mother to do her bidding. He was then blessed by the earth mother and any vampire he sired once they had proved themselves, could have the ability to walk in the sunlight. These vampires were known as the risen. Only about 50 vampires had achieved this rank and May was one of them. Unlike the other siblings of the four, Traian was able to predict when a human of pure heart was set to pass and would give them the option if they wanted to pass to the next world or to live for eternity aiding the earth mother and the constant threats to her children. May chose the latter that day she was shot on duty and had never looked back. The man went silent, not responding to May's question. It looked like he regretted saying it deeply. Like he had just given away a family secret. "You're okay" She tried to reassure him. "I don't plan to take a flight to the United Kingdom anytime soon. Besides bigger fish to fry currently. Like how and why did a century-year-old New York vampire order crumble to the ground overnight." "There was a vampire holding this stone box who broke into the building earlier tonight. That’s when everything started going hay wire. I took the opportunity to take as many of your kind out as possible. I did bloody brilliantly until I came into this room. Didn't do a perimeter check properly, too focused on the vampires, I didn't see that the safe had become dislodged and that they were attempting to remove it." He grunted. "You did bloody brilliantly. Entering a vampire order building in the middle of the night. You definitely made a massive dent." May wanted to correct him, that his actions were dangerous and reckless. Taking out vampires who may had sired other vampires would go on to become ferial killing more humans than they would if their sire hadn't been killed. No point though May thought. It wasn't going to change anything. He did what he thought was right and put his own safety as a lower priority. Can't fault him for that. "I hope my sons remember me well." The man said seemingly out of nowhere. Death is coming, they always talk about family when it gets close, she thought. He isn't going to make it till morning. Her thoughts were confirmed when she smelt his blood and saw it start to leak from under the safe. "Do you think I could get a drink of of of…" The man's voice was different, the accent seemed to have faded and it was more demanding and twisted. The virus was starting to take over him. A cold tear rolled down her cheek and for the second time in her life, she looked the other way before taking the shot.
