The song ended, and I stood there waiting for Riley to get us more cocktails.
As I made my way through the crowd, I accidentally bumped into Katherina, the girl who was supposed to be Damien's destined bride. The one chosen by their fathers to unite the Silvester and Esclipe packs.
"Watch where you're going," Katherina sneered at me, her eyes full of contempt.
I couldn't help but feel a surge of anger rise within me. "I could say the same to you."
Katherina's face twisted in disgust. "If it isn't the little stray wolf who managed to worm her way into the Silvester pack? You got into a nice dress and suddenly you forgot who you are, freak.”
“You're nothing but a filthy mutt, Astrid. A pathetic excuse for a werewolf who can't even turn into a wolf."
There it is, the insult. The one I receive almost everyday, with no further purpose than to remind me that I am a loser. But these words cut deep, and they need to be replied.
“At least I'm not a spoiled brat who's only good for being a pawn in her father's game."
"At least I didn't have to be chosen by my father to find a mate," I retorted.
"At least I have the freedom to choose whoever I want."
Katherina's face turned red with anger.
"You may have the freedom to choose, but who would choose you? A pathetic, weak excuse for a werewolf like you? No one wants such a freak show for a mate-"
And then she added "Oh, and let's not forget about your little crush on Damien. It's so cute how you still pine after him all these years.”
Kat had been my best friend since we were at the age of six, when my father is still the Alpha of our pack. And whatever I felt or thought, Kat would be the first to know. And now shes using it against me.
Damien swooped in, standing protectively in front of Katherina. "Watch your mouth, Astrid," he growled.
I was taken aback by Damien's sudden change in attitude. He was so different from the charming and playful guy I had spent the night with just hours ago. He seemed cold and distant now, like all of the things that had happened between us had never happened at all.
I felt my heart sink as Damien took Katherina's side. "What are you talking about?" he asked, his eyes narrowing at me.
Katherina smirked,"Oh, just Astrid's little crush on you, Damien. She's had it for years, and she just can't seem to let it go."
Damien's reaction was surprising. He didn't defend me or even try to calm Katherina down. Instead, he looked at me with cold, distant eyes. It was as if he didn't even know me.
I could feel the eyes of everyone in the room on me, and I wanted nothing more than to disappear. This was the last thing I wanted to deal with tonight.
Luckily, Riley took my hand and pulled me away from the scene. I want nothing more than to go home now.
Riley sidled up beside me, smirking knowingly. "Looks like the Silvester prince has made his choice," she said. "And the Silver prince is an asshole."
As Riley led me away from the tense encounter with Damien and Katherina, she took me to a group of friends who were chatting animatedly about the Lycan prince from Lockheart pack in the south.
"Have you guys heard about the rumors surrounding the Lycan prince?" one of the girls asked as we approached.
"What rumors?" I asked, intrigued.
"He's been seen wandering around our town." Cathy said, excitement in her voice.
Riley rolled her eyes. "Please, he's probably just another arrogant Lycan prince who thinks his last name would get him anyone he wants."
I couldn't help but feel a bit skeptical. "I don't believe in all that 'destined mate' stuff. Besides, why would a Lycan prince come all the way to our town just to find his mate?"
Riley shrugged. "Who knows? But I heard his father is a pretty powerful Alpha. Maybe he's looking to expand his territory."
We continued to chat about the mysterious Lycan prince, sharing rumors we had heard and speculating about what he could be like. Despite Riley's skepticism, I found myself feeling curious about him. The idea of someone coming into my life and sweeping me off my feet was appealing, even if it seemed unlikely.
As the conversation died down, I couldn't help but feel a little disappointed.
One of my friends, a girl named Jules, took a sip of her drink before responding. "Rumors have it that he's the son of Alpha Dominic's Luna Monique with the Lycan kind."
I gasped in shock. "Wait, Luna Monique? She was one of the mates of the proud Lycan King Edward?"
Jules nodded. "That's the one. Apparently, they broke the pact for some unknown reason, and Luna Monique ended up with Alpha Dominic instead. And now, her son with Edward is the Lycan prince of Lockheart pack."
I couldn't believe it. The idea of a wolf and a Lycan breaking the pact and having a child together was unheard of. It was no wonder why the rumors were spreading like wildfire.
Cathy chimed in, "And the best part? He's apparently looking for his mate."
"Well, from what I've heard, he's got silver hair and ash-colored eyes," David said.
I felt a shiver run down my spine. Those features sounded familiar, almost like Damien's.
"Hey, isn't that the same as Damien?" I asked, my heart racing with sudden realization.
The group fell silent, exchanging confused glances.
"Maybe," Riley said slowly. "Damien definitely took after his mother, his older brother may-"
"Be the sa-" I began, but was cut off by a sudden commotion across the room.
A group of werewolves were gathered around someone, their voices raised in excitement. I pushed my way through the crowd, my heart pounding with anticipation.
And then I saw him.
As I made my way through the crowd, I could see that the werewolves around the prince were all young and attractive, their eyes filled with excitement as they gazed upon him. They were all dressed in their finest attire, as if they were trying to impress. I could see girls giggling and blushing, trying to catch his attention, while the boys stood around him. He, for his part, seemed to be enjoying the attention, his silver hair shining in the moonlight as he smiled and chatted with the werewolves around him. He was tall and lean, with a chiseled jawline and piercing ash-colored eyes that seemed to sparkle with mischief.
The Lycan prince from Lockheart pack was standing there, his silver hair shining in the light.
He looked just like Damien.
