What are you?
Turning on the torchlight, Birdie checked through the lockers one by one, searching for the book Emily said she left behind.
Entering the school after 7 pm is prohibited and punishable by expulsion but Emily still insists Birdie gets the book for her. Their mother was even in support and she had been threatened to go to bed without meals.
On a normal day, Birdie would have refused, even if she would be beaten but today, she cannot risk going to bed without food. She haven’t had any meals since the previous day and now, the family prepared a special meal. How can she go to bed without tasting it? Besides, she isn’t a student of the school. Humans are not allowed so the expulsion punishment doesn’t apply to her.
“ Finally,” Birdie sighs in relief, holding the notebook in her hand.
“ Did you hear that?” A female voice said from the corridor, outside the classroom and Birdie immediately turned off her torchlight.
She held the book to her chest and hid under the desk in the dark.
“ I didn’t hear anything,” A male voice responded and Birdie held her breath when a torchlight flashed inside the classroom.
‘ Don’t smell my scents please,’ she prays silently.
“ Can you smell that? It.. smells.. like a human scent,” The female voice said, sniffing the air, accompanied by another sniffing.
“ It must be one of the kids,” The male voice answered grumpily.
“ Humans are worthless! They should be left in the pack to serve us as slaves along with the omegas! Why do we have them?” The woman fumed, dissatisfaction and disgust evident in her tone.
“ you’ve gotten it wrong. The human kids are hotcakes in the market right now. One of them is worth more than two werewolves. Now do you still think they’re worthless?” The man asked in a convincing tone and everywhere fell silent.
“ I want to be there during the transaction. I want to see how much the humans are actually worth,” The woman said, followed by a smirk and Birdie sneezed.
“ Take them away, I don’t want them to sneeze all over me. Hmph.” The woman scoffed in irritation.
“ Yes, Miss. Daisy,” The man answered in a humble tone and Birdie gasped.
Daisy? The pack’s alpha daughter? Why would she sell the pack’s pups and kids? What’s she up to?
Birdie couldn’t help the thoughts that flooded her mind. After everywhere went silent, she sneaked out of the classroom in the dark, enduring every pain she got from hitting the invisible furniture.
Standing in the corridor, she looked around and couldn’t find anybody in sight. She was no wolf so her sense of smell is as dull as that of a lizard. After minutes of looking for trails, she gave up and decided to go home before she they will decide to lock her out to sleep in the cold for returning late.
Just like she came in, she left through the same route. Walking down the bushy streets that lead to the bustling part of the pack, not far from her home, Birdie almost jumped out of her skin when she felt someone’s touch on her shoulder.
She turned around and flashed her torch in panic at the face of the man standing before her. The grin on his face told her he was up to no good.
“ Humans shouldn’t be walking so late in the night to avoid being eaten by their superiors,”
Birdie gulped and took a step backward. She knew better than anyone not to walk after 7 pm but she didn’t expect to stay longer than she intended.
“ It’s just past 9 pm, Jayden.” She tells him, trying to keep her voice firm and calm. If there’s anything she had learned for the past sixteen years, it is never to let your predator sense your fear.
“ Do you dare eat me?” She asked him, flashing the torch in his eyes.
“ I dare not eat you but I dare kill you so that even your corpse will be left with no shame you filthy human!” Jayden roared, attacking Birdie and the torchlight flew away, falling on the grass some feet away from where they battled.
Birdie struggled with Jayden as he reached for her Jean trousers to rip them apart with his claws. She knew his intentions and her eyes widened in fear, panic gripping her as she struggled with this creature that is ten times stronger than her.
She whimpered as he dug his claws into her skin. A scream left her mouth as the excruciating pain surged through every inch of her body. She knew no matter how loud she screamed, no one would come to her rescue. The humans are not protected in the pack.
She tilted her head backward and sunk her teeth into his arm, earning a loud cry from him before reaching for her brazier and pulling out a paper which she quickly blew its content into his face.
Jayden rolled over from her, holding his face with his bleeding arm and without hesitation, Birdie took to her heels and ran as fast as her legs could take her, leaving her torch light behind.
Arriving at home, she tried to sneak in to avoid being seen but met her family having a good time in the living room.
“ your book,” She handed the book to Emma and wasn’t surprised at the look that they were giving her. It’s not like this was the first time she had come home covered in blood.
“ your blood stinks so much,” Emily covered her nose with her palm and Birdie rushed towards the basement.
“ Wait..” Her mother stopped her.
“ What took you so long? Did you encounter anything unusual at the school or…”
“ Or you went somewhere else.” She completed her sentence and Birdie drew in a slow breath, enduring the pains in her bleeding arms.
“ No, mother,” She answered. She can’t tell them what she heard. They can’t know about it. No one will believe her. She doesn’t even trust them.
“ Dinner is over. You are not allowed to go into the kitchen until tomorrow,” Her mother said sternly, and hot tears dropped from her eyes, rolling down her cheeks. If only they know how much her stomach hurts for not eating for days.
Without uttering any word, Birdie turned and left clutching her stomach.
Jayden screaming decreased and two men rushed to where he lay helplessly on the ground wheezing.
Flashing their torches at him, one of them squinted his eyes and squatted slowly to examine his body.
“ She blew silver on his face. But it’s prohibited to use silver powders in the pack. Isn’t that punishable by death?” The one standing said.
“ Look at this, “ He pointed at the golden ring on Jayden’s arm. The other gasped at the sight and looked closer.
“ What is this, Atlas?” He asked curiously. He had never seen such bite marks from any human on any werewolf before.
“ I have never seen it before,” Atlas answered, his eyes deep and face covered with curiosity.
“ She bites my arm... That woman is… a witch..” Jayden said forcefully, trying to convey the pain he was feeling and how agonizing it was.arm
“ I don’t want to die, please help me,” He cried and Atlas sighed.
“ Take him away. Don’t let any other person see the mark on his body.” Atlas told his bodyguard Eric who nodded his head and threw Jayden over his shoulder.
Atlas placed his hand on his waist, his eyes deep in the dark before setting his eyes on the torchlight lying on the grass. He picked it up and gazed at it as if there was something hidden in it. Something that pricked his inner interest.
“ What are you, Aurelia Birdie Nightshade?”
