Chapter 9

Elissa was catching her breath. Her chest was going up and down, her eyes were burning in anger. The sides of her eyes were a bit wet. Her emotion was high, and she wanted to punch Alejandro in his face right now. She couldn’t believe the man did that to her. He made her work on the farm the whole week for nothing. She gets it that the man hates her, but was that necessary? He wasted her time, instead of finishing her office work, she was there outside talking with each of every farmer. “How could you?!” Elissa said, trying to hold back her tears. Alejandro lifted his gaze. He was looking at the pitiful face of Elissa. He wanted to regret playing with her, but it was too late, it was done. And he wanted this, he wanted to see the woman suffer, but why? Why does his heart ache a little seeing her teary-eyed? He wanted to stand up, go to her, and wipe those eyes. But instead of doing all those things, he remained cold, looking at her pitiful state. “Why do you have to make me suffer under the sun for nothing?” Elissa asked him. Her eyes were full of emotions and questions that needed to be answered. She wanted the man to explain something, to tell her that he had just forgotten that they already had all that data. But that was impossible, he knew, he perfectly knew what he had done. Minutes had passed, but Alejandro remained silent. He was just looking straight at her without any sign of pity, without any sign of regret on his face. Elissa bit her lower lips to prevent herself from crying in front of him. There was no way she would cry hard in front of this beast. She took a deep breath to calm herself a bit. She needed to remind herself that she had to be tough for Katarina. “Do you still love me?” Alejandro’s eyes were widened a bit by that question of Elissa. He was surprised by that question. He never thought that his ex-wife would ask him that. He opened his mouth, but there were no words that came out. He was speechless. “You are acting like a childish ex-husband who cannot move on,” Elissa told him. His jaw dropped upon hearing that from the woman. His ego would never accept that! Ex-husband that couldn’t move on? No way! “In your dreams, woman! My love for you was long gone!” Elissa smirked. Alejandro sounded very defensive. She just asked him that out of frustration, but the question just caught him off-guard. He did not expect to hear from her. “If that is so, then stop acting like a child,” Elissa said. Alejandro glared at her. “I am not acting like a child, I am your boss.” He made it sound powerful. But Elissa was now standing tough, she had already recovered. Her eyes were now brave, and ready to fight him. She was far from the woman who was about to cry earlier. “Yes, you are my boss, and this is not a playground. This is a workplace, we are supposed to work here, not play your childish games,” Elissa reminded him coldly. Her voice was calm but cold. She went to work, to earn money for Katarina’s future and not to do some stupid nonsense task for him. “Don’t tell me what to do,” Alejandro said. His ego was hit. But her words should not affect him anymore. No matter what she said, he would do what he wanted. He is her boss. He would do anything to get his revenge. This was just the beginning. There will be more suffering for her in the future. Elissa stared right straight into his eyes, not showing any fear of him. She knew that he was serious right now, but so she was. “If you don’t like how I treat you, you can leave. You are free to go,” Alejandro said. She did not say anything, she just turned her back on him. Good thing it was Friday, the last day of work for the week. She left the office without saying anything. After all the hardship all week, finally she could go back to the city and spend time with her daughter. Elissa did not waste any time, she traveled, going to the city where her daughter was. It was past eight in the evening when she reached Alena’s apartment. Katarina was still wide awake when she arrived. “Mommy!” Katarina happily welcomed her. Elissa hugged her daughter tightly. Magically, Katarina’s hug removed all the stress and frustrations she had. “How’s my baby, hmm?” Elissa sweetly asked her daughter. “Good! I mish shooo!” Katarina answered, her energetic. She brought Katarina to their unit, so they could sleep together. She thanked Alena for taking good care of her daughter while she was away. “It was fun taking care of your daughter,” Alena said. They were in the living room of Elissa’s unit drinking wine. Katarina was already asleep, so they already had some time to talk. “Thank you so much, I owe you so much,” Elissa said. “Nahh,” Alena smiled at her. Alena was an angel in disguise in her life. She has been there by her side during her hard times. “So…” Alena smiled at her teasingly. “Hmm?” Elissa could guess what her friend was thinking. Of course, it was about her working for her ex-husband. “How was your work?” Alena asked her. It was not a simple question based on Alena’s smile. She was not interested in her work, the woman was interested in how she interacted with Alejandro. “I know your smile, Alena,” Elissa said, laughingly. Alena laughed. “Well…” Alena shrugged her shoulders, not denying what she wanted to know. Elissa sighed. She remembered her last encounter with Alejandro. It was not fine. They had a heated conversation. “Why? What happened?” Alena asked her, worriedly. Elissa sighed again before narrating to her friend what happened. “My goodness!” Alena covered her mouth upon hearing what happened. She pitied her friend. It was not easy to work under the sun, and all of that for nothing. “He’s such a heartless man!”
