Hope Floats

The fire light danced on her beautiful delicate face. Her large teal eyes held his with hope shining out, although he knew she was afraid of him she wasn’t showing it. He could hear her heart beating, he wanted to reach out and touch her but he held back. “We need to do something together.” Adella turned away from him and went to the kitchen area. She forged through the knives until she found the right one. It was a small double edged knife with a stone handle. It would do. She sharpened it on her stone as she made her way back to where Sortas was standing just watching her with his dark eyes. She could tell he wanted to say something but she wasn’t sure she wanted to hear it. She took a deep breath as she stood in front of him doing her best to remember how Baron makes her feel, how HE once made her feel; like he could never get enough of her. She reached for his hand and placed the knife to his palm, then she placed her hand over his grabbing it tight. With her free hand she turned the knife inside their grip over it. She felt the pinch of the cut as she began to pull the knife out from between them. She felt him grab on tight as it cut both of them. Send their blood mixing together. Sortas felt her power enter him, burning making him uncomfortable but he held steady. She was looking directly in his eyes. “I am yours and you are mine. My powers will flow with yours. My heart beats with yours forever more.” She never blinked and she felt each and every word and as she felt her power flow into him she closed her eyes truely making him hers. Demanding it from him. Sortas fell to his knees still holding onto her hand, still letting their blood mix together. The power was overwhelming all his senses. “I am yours and you are MINE.” He repeated her words. “My powers will flow with yours. My heart beast with yours forever more.” It was so overwhelming tears fell from his eyes and he bowed his head as she released his hand. He eventually looked back up at her “My Queen.” Still on his knees below her. She stood looking down at him, blood dripping off her finger tips. She could feel what he was feeling now, his deep regret, his desire to say something to her. She needed to forgive him for them to be true to each other. She got down to his level “You hurt me.” She heard a sob escape him and when he looked at her he had tears running down his face. “I am regretful for my actions. My desire for you I took as needing to dominate over you. I do understand now that we are equals. I cannot dominate over you. If you wish me to suffer being away from you for the rest of my life then so be it. I do not deserve you, I would do anything to prove my valor towards you. Anything.” He could feel her anguish at his words. She was torn between hate and forgiveness. “Small steps at a time.” She wanted to move forward and not be stuck in the past. She would let him work at it. Marcus coo’d from his crib and Sortas looked over him with wide eyes. He had seen him though Baron but never present. “May I?” He pointed at Marcus. Adella nodded that he could. Sortas ever so gently picked up Marcus “Hello little man. Don’t you look just look just like your Father.” They were facing each other and Marcus, ever the curious one, reached out and grabbed his nose making Sortas and Adella giggle together. Adella put her hand on his arm and her head against his shoulder. The touching was not lost on him, it felt really good to have some acceptance from her. He sat with his son for a while and then it was time to go. He stood up and handed Marcus to Adella “Thank you.” He meant it on so many levels. “You are welcome. Just know I can hear your thoughts now, and we can talk inside.” She said as she took Marcus. When she looked back at him Baron was looking at her. “My Love.” He reached for her and pulled her into his arms kissing her deeply. He pulled away and looked down at his injured hand. “Was this what I think it was?” Baron ran his finger over the wound and watched it begin to heal. “It was my way of making you mine. Sharing a part of me with you, giving you some of my powers. We are one, we feel what each other is feeling, thinking and if we try really hard we might be able to see what the other sees.” She smiled at him. The feelings from the dream creeping back into her mind. “With the full moon tonight I think we should have a celebration. We could celebrate the births of the packs recent children, your return, you making me yours. We have a lot to celebrate.” Baron started making some breakfast and Adella sat down to feed Marcus as they talked. Later on that day She felt whole, she felt loved and cared for. Her pack was a source of strength that was more powerful than a million mermaids on their own. The sun broke the horizon and Baron made his way to the ocean below. He thought of all the lonely nights he slept on this tiny beach wishing she would come back to him and now he was carrying his son down there. Adella watched from above as Baron stood at the edge of the ocean and looked up at Adella. She nodded encouraging him. He took his cloths off and Marcus was naked as well. He was starting to cry from being cold. Adella did not want the pack to know if he could change. Seagulls flew around them singing to him as Baron made his way into knee deep water. Holding tight to Marcus he held his arm pits and dipped him in the water. Marcus became enthralled by the water, kicking it with his feet but he did not form a fin. Baron looked up at Adella and shook his head ‘No’ and pulled Marcus back into his arms and walked back up to the beach. Adella was relieved that he didn’t change. She looked down at her injured hand and saw just a very faint line where she had cut herself this morning. She absentmindedly ran her finger along the light scar that remained. A small smile curled at the edge of her lips thinking of their exchange. Maybe there was hope for Sortas, just maybe. She reached for Marcus as Baron approached with him. He could tell she was relieved, she would be the only who could teach him the ways of the ocean if he had changed. “I have to go start training the men in our pack.” Adella and Baron split ways at the end of the path. She watched as he made his way toward the newly designated training grounds and she made her way toward the pack house. She wanted to plan a great full moon celebration tonight.
