I woke up and couldn’t believe that it was already 11:45 am. I looked at my phone and noticed that there were 6 new messages. One was from the boss man saying that it was okay for me not to come to work. I shook my head at myself. I didn’t even bother to see if he said it was okay or not before I went back to sleep. Another was from Angela, wondering where I was.
A- Why didn’t you message me that you weren’t coming in? She sent it this morning.
A- Bossman said that you weren’t coming in today. What is going on? Are you good? Do you need me to pick you up for anything after work?
A- If you don’t answer me, I am going to come over during my lunch hour.
A- I am on my way. She just sent that one to me too. I sighed and got myself out of bed so that I could make myself look halfway decent before she showed up. I wasn’t even going to bother texting her there since she was going to be here any minute anyway.
I went and brushed my teeth and tried to put down my crazy curly hair. I am the type of person who has her hair up more often than having it down. I have considered cutting my hair off. It is almost more hassle than it is worth. The only problem is that anytime I have mentioned it to anyone, they always urge me not to because shorter hair makes people look bigger. At least with my hair long, when it is down, it covers all the rolls that I have on my chin. That and contouring are my best friends.
I threw on some comfy sweats and a big puffy sweater. I feel a lot more confident in my body when I am wearing clothes that look big on me. Then it doesn’t cling to the lumpy parts of my body. I am not the kind of person who likes to wear shapewear unless I absolutely must, which thankfully, hasn’t been needed since I went in for my job interview. I groaned at the thought of putting some on when I meet up with Derek.
Speaking of Derek, I saw that he was the last message but didn’t get to look at it since I was making myself look like a person again for Angela. She had better appreciate the effort that I put in for her.
D- Good morning, I was so happy that I woke up to the phone call still going this morning. It made me feel a little less alone knowing you were at the other end of the phone. I hope you have to catch up on all the sleep that you have missed this week since I am such a bad influence and keeping you up. Text me when you wake up!
I started to type up a response when I felt my phone vibrate from an incoming message.
D- I just got on my lunch break. I am surprised you are still asleep. I am glad you are getting rest, but I feel bad that you were that tired. I will have to start setting alarms so I can tell you to go to bed! I have been thinking of you all day. I miss looking at my phone and seeing a message from you.
C- I’m sorry I was so very tired; I am glad that I got to fall asleep with you still on the phone too. I am up now, so when you are free you can message me. My friend is coming over. She is worried about me but when she leaves, I have nothing else going on!
D- So are you free this evening? That’s weird. I wonder why he is asking me that?
C- Yeah if you don’t count me being lazy in bed and watching TV all day as being busy. Why do you ask?
D- I know I said that I wouldn’t have any free time to meet for another two weeks, but I can’t wait any longer. I want to meet you tonight. I had already contacted my friend and he said that he has room for us if you want to meet me there? Oh my gosh, why does he have to spring this on me? I am too excited and nervous right now to even think about this and, of course, Angela is on her way right now. I heard my screen door open and someone opening my door with a key. She didn’t even bother knocking.
“You have got some explaining to do! I texted you a million times!” She opened the door and peaked her head around the corner of the entry hallway. I could tell how irritated she was. I should have sent her a message this morning alongside boss man.
“I am sorry! Please don’t hate me! I was so tired, and I didn’t think of messaging you either when I called in.”
“Yeah okay, I am sure you were on the phone with lover boy all night and that’s why you couldn’t come in!” I gave her a puppy dog look and batted my eyes at her.
“Maybe just a little bit.” She rolled her eyes but sat down on the couch and set the bag she brought with her on my coffee table.
“I brought you lunch. I also asked if I could take more time for lunch so I could check in on your sorry ass. What am I greeted with? You are sitting on your phone and grinning like a fool. I shouldn’t have even bothered!” I laughed but gave her a side hug.
“Thank you, Angela, you are seriously the best. What did you get?” I got excited because I skipped breakfast and was not ready to skip lunch either.
“Girl, I just got you soup, I actually thought you were sick!”
“What kind of soup?”
“You know I always pick up Menudo for you. I don’t know why you like this stuff. I think it stinks.” I couldn’t help but laugh again. She always knows what I love to eat when I am under the weather. Menudo is the perfect hangover cure and always makes me feel better when I am sick. I went to my kitchen and grabbed myself a spoon so I could chow down.
“Do you want anything to drink?” I yelled from my kitchen.
“No, I got a coke from the restaurant. I also picked up some tacos. You can have one if you want since you aren’t sick.” I could hear the annoyance in her voice. I owe her one.
“It’s okay, Menudo is all I need! I have so much to tell you about Derek!”
“Well, I am already here so you might as well tell me all about it.” I looked at her while I was sitting down. She wanted to act like she was upset, but I could see a smile creeping around the corner of her lips.
“We stayed up on the phone all night, and we even fell asleep together with the phone call still going!”
“What are you in high school or something?” I laughed again.
“I know, but it is so sweet. I have never been able to do anything like this before. I have to start from somewhere, you know!” She got her food out and started munching on her tacos. I’m not going to lie, they looked really yummy.
“What did you guys talk about?”
“He told me all about his mom passing away, we talked about his ex, I told him about Anna, and I confessed that I am a virgin.” She stopped midway with the taco in her mouth and stared at me. She slowly took a bite and set it down.
“Tell me everything!” I started to tell her all about the conversation that we had last night.
“Oh my god, that is crazy! So, does he care that you want to wait until marriage before you have s*x?”
“He told me he doesn’t care about it; he won’t pressure me to do anything I don’t want to do.”
“You better hold on tight to him! I didn’t even think it was possible to find a man who was willing to give up on s*x for a girl. When are you guys going to meet each other in person?”
“That’s the thing, he told me last night that he couldn’t meet up for another two weeks, but just before you came in, he said he could meet up tonight.”
“Oh, he has it bad for you!” I laughed again but was still so nervous. I don’t know if I am ready to meet him just yet. I also don’t want to wait two weeks though. I looked at her with desperation in my eyes.
“Can you please come back over after work and help me get ready? I suck at this stuff, and I actually want to make a good first impression.” She sighed but then smiled.
“Of course, I can come over and help you out. I can’t wait to hear all about your date. You better remember everything because I want to hear every detail.” She got up and started to get her things together. It was already almost 1 pm so I knew she must get back to work.
“Just text me when you get off and then I can start getting dressed. I am so nervous!”
“You have nothing to be nervous about. I know it is sudden, but if you guys like each other, why wait? It can be so awkward sitting on the phone all the time without meeting one another face to face first. Sometimes you can have chemistry on the phone but then when you meet up it all dies. Better to get it out of the way now. It sounded like he was busy all the time, so I couldn’t wait. Get it out of the way and then you can message your loverboy all you want without hesitation.” She makes a good point. I can’t help but get nervous. This all seems so sudden.
“Okay well, I will see you after you get off, drive safe!” I watched her get into her car and start to drive off. I turned around and that is when I realized I had forgotten to message him back! I rushed inside and grabbed my phone so I could send him a message.
C- My friend stayed longer than I thought she was going to, and I didn’t realize that I had never messaged you back. I would love to meet up tonight. I am nervous though; I wasn’t expecting to meet up so soon. My phone vibrated back right away. Now I feel even worse, he must have been waiting to see what I would say back.
D- I figured as much, I was going to message you again but didn’t want to bother you guys. What time do you want to have dinner?
C- Does 7 pm sound good? I like to eat dinner a little later in the evenings.
D- That sounds great, and don’t be nervous. You have nothing to be nervous about. If anyone is going to be nervous, it should be me.
C- I would ask what you mean, but I know you aren’t going to answer me. You always have to be so cryptic!
D- You will know tonight, don’t worry.
