Jace took me back to my house and helped me into my bed. I’m thankful my mom didn’t wake up or she’d spend the morning making jokes about s*x. Nothing happened, I swear! I need to figure out what I want before I do anything with either of them again. He did give me a quick kiss on the forehead before he climbed out my window, making my heart flutter. He has those magical moments which can be so sweet and really throw me off whenever we are alone, just the two of us.
I woke up this morning feeling so much better. The concussion is completely gone. Thank you, werewolf healing abilities. I go downstairs to get ready for school. I see my mom holding a cup of coffee and looking overly suspicious. s**t! What does she know? I don’t like what’s about to happen. “Did someone have a good night last night.” I jolt my head to stare daggers at her. I don’t like what she’s insinuating.
“What are you talking about?” I ask. Her grin grows bigger. Goddess, I hate her sometimes.
"Samuel, I know what happened last night. I saw him climb out of the window.”
“No, you really don’t” She looks at me with a smug smile. “Mom, it’s not at all what it looked like.”
“Ok, Samuel. Sure. Sure, it isn’t” She thinks she is being so funny, but she really doesn’t realize what happened last night. I should tell her, shouldn’t I? Or would it be better to not tell her.
“Mom, shut up!” She looks at me. The aura of the room changes entirely. “I saw Dad last night.” Shock overcomes her face. “I was feeling conflicted cause the whole Carson/Jace thing, so I went for a run. I kept thinking about them, so I tried running faster and faster until I tripped. I gave myself a concussion, so I laid there at one of the trees. Dad came to visit me and showed me some memories of his past and answered some questions I’ve been having.”
“Samuel, we need to take you to the Pack doctor. You are hallucinating. Your father is dead.”
“He said I love you.” She stops in her tracks and looks at me. She still doesn’t believe me, but I know she wants to. “He said ‘you still shine brighter than the North star.”
Her eyes grow wide, and she grabs me in a big hug. I can see her crying streams of tears from each eye. I don’t know what that phrase means, seeing my mom’s reaction, it must be something really important.
“That’s what your father told me every time he left the house. He never left without saying those words. They were the last words he said to me before he died.” After hearing what those words meant to her, I can’t stop myself from crying. Now, we are both crying and just holding each other.
"She breaks the hug and asks, “So why was Jace here last night.” I laugh and gently nudge her.
“He sensed Dad and came to check on me. He thought something was wrong. Then, he helped me get home since my head was still fuzzy.” She looks at me suspiciously, implying s*x. “He gave me a kiss on the forehead and that’s all I’m saying.”
“That’s fine, but people don’t usually just wake up in the middle of the night and run through the woods as fast as they can to find someone who only ‘might’ be in trouble.” I think about what she said. Does she have a point?
“I love you. I’m going to run to school. I want to clear my head.” She gives me a concerned look, so I promise that the same thing that happened last night won’t happen again.
I needed to run to school today. I don’t really want to see Carson right now. I’m nervous he is going to smell Jace on me despite me not actually being with Jace. It seems like unnecessary drama, and I don’t need any more drama in my life right now.
I run my usual training path which passes through the school. It’s probably about 10 miles. It’s a lot easier when I don’t need to run at the inhumane speeds Jace makes me run. Awe, Jace, I can’t stop thinking about him. Mom was right earlier though. No normal guy just runs through the woods to make sure a friend is ok when they don’t actually know the friend is in danger. They only do that when they really like the person. Maybe Jace does really care about me. The feeling in my stomach makes me think I really care about him. I don’t know though. She also mentioned the “Mate-bond” and I haven’t experienced that yet. Ugh! Jace, get out of my head!!!
As I’m running, my wolf jumps in my head. I stumble over my feet and fall into the road. It was not my fault this time! My wolf tripped me up… Why does it sound like I just gave the excuse that my dog ate my homework… Never mind!
I look to where he is calling out to and see something on the ground. I get closer and realize it’s a girl. Her clothes are all ragged, dirty, and too large for her. Her skin is pale and wraps tightly around her bones. I run up to her even faster and check her pulse. I think I can hear a very faint pulse. I put my hand under her lips and feel breath escaping. She’s still breathing. She’s ok. I can sense from her smell that she is a wolf. I try to mind-link to her. “JACE!!!” she yells. I fall backwards onto my tailbone. She’s in so much pain that it overcame the mind-link.
“Ow!” Damnit! This is just really not my 24 hours. Wait! She was calling out for Jace. Is this Luna!
I don’t know if it’s her or not, but I know I need to help her regardless. I pick her up and run as fast as I can! I don’t bother going to school. On the way, I mind-link Jace, but I’m getting winded and I think it comes out, “Jace – ‘Mergency – Luna – NOW!” By the time I get to the Pack House, I am exhausted. I lost all my stregth. Holding someone as I ran tired me out more than I expected. She is really light, but that doesn’t change anything.
I see Jace waiting at the door of the infirmary. I hand the girl to one of the doctors and collapse forward, out of breath. Jace helps me up.
“Nurse, get me a wheelchair please. Hurry!” He holds me in a hug as I catch my breath. “Samuel. Samuel, are you ok?”
“Yeah, just ran… really tired.” The nurse brings over a wheelchair. Jace helps me lower into it. I smile at him as I regain my strength. “Is it Luna?”
Jace whispers in my ear, “Yeah, it is. Thanks for saving her.” I love hearing his voice whisper in my ear.
Jace wheels us into the hospital. We get to the bed where Luna is laying. “Doctor, what’s wrong with her?”
The doctor responds, “We can’t tell for sure. This is something we haven’t seen before. It looks like she was constantly dosed with both Alpha toxin and Wolf’s Bane. The Wolf’s Bane eradicated her immune system and when the Alpha toxin infected her, her body couldn’t fight it. She is stuck in a coma. She keeps regenerating, but her body can’t defeat the infection fast enough since she is so weak. I’ll run some tests, but I don’t know if there is anything we can do.”
Jace commands, “What are you trying to say?” Jace’s arms drop down on my chest. I wrap around Jace to comfort him. He lightens up. I can feel both of our bodies love the feeling of each other. I think I can even feel something poking into the back of my wheelchair, hard against me.
“There is nothing we can do but wait and hope, but she might not wake up.” I slowly struggle to get out of the wheelchair and pull Jace in a hug.
“It’s gonna be ok. We can get through this.” Jace reciprocates and pulls me in tightly.
“He needs to pay for this.”
