Sunday had passed uneventfully, I’d stay in the room, cleaning the bathroom, doing all my washing and watching Tv for the afternoon, I really missed mums wi-fi.
Monday morning, I was at work with 10 mins to spare, Mr Walsh unlocked the door and I followed him.
I hung my bag and coat up, heading straight to the back section I’d begun on Friday.
I set about pulling the remainder of the books off the shelf, then began sorting them into piles.
Time must of past quickly, As Mr Walsh stood there coffee in hand.
Something about his doctors encouraging him to exercise more, then shuffling around the shop so he got the morning coffee and a schnitzel burger for me.
I thank him and he heads back towards the counter, I finish my lunch, getting back into by 3 o’clock I’ve sorted half the books into the correct piles but not order.
I hear the door open, as the bell chimes, I can hear 2 sets of footsteps coming towards her, two young girls around 15 pass her walking to the reading corner, they sit on the couch against the wall, first putting their bags in the bag shelf.
They flicked through the magazines, piled on the table in front of them, they started chatting away.
I continue to sort through the books, half hearing their conversation in the background as I worked.
They talk about celebrities, the new movies and this years lipstick colours, I’ve almost completely tuned out then I hear.
“Did you hear about the Blackwater Alpha, decimating another pack? He’ll have the biggest territory of any pack soon, who’s he planning to challenge?” the blonde girl says.
“What does it matter how big a territory he has? Who’s he going to share it with? 28 and still without a Luna! Ruthless but lonely.” Her dark haired friend replied.
“Gosh April you’re ruthless! I hope he’s just waiting for me, you ever seen him? He god like gorgeous.” The blonde fans herself with her hand, then their both in a fits of giggles.
When they calm down, they flick through the magazines a bit more, they had to be young werewolves, this town was becoming more and more interesting.
“Did you hear about the Strange Alpha in Frostcreek?” The blonde began again,
“No, what about him Jane?” The friend replied.
“They say he’s searching for runaway she-wolf.” The blonde Jane continued.
“Oh? How did you hear this?” April pressed suddenly curious.
“He’s asked just about every wolf in the area, showing her photo to anyone he meets.” Jane shrugs.
“What’s his name? Do we know him?” April asks.
“No never heard of him probably a rogue Alpha, Something like Gareth or Garth?” the girl Jane try’s.
I turn to face them, they give me a weird look.
“Alpha Garrett?” I ask, their mouths fall open.
“You’re her aren’t you?! Ivy Sable?!” Jane exclaims.
I suddenly felt a presence at my side, looking up Mr Walsh gestured to the girls to follow him, he sent me a look of apology.
Why couldn’t Garrett just let me go?
Mr Walsh came back I stood following him to a set of chairs in the reading corner, we sat.
“Mrs Walsh told me what you told her, this Alpha chasing you, that’s the boyfriend you left behind isn’t it?” His eyes are sad with understanding.
“Yes, his name is Garrett, we dated after meeting through school accidently but his friends convinced me to leave before either of us met our true mates, saving one of us a broken heart. So I did, I left a letter I’d hoped he would accept it and move on, but a small part of me hoped he wouldn’t.” I finish, a tear escapes and I quickly wipe it away.
“Well he definitely hasn’t, he’s caused quite a stir, and every wolf with an eye, is looking for you.” Mr Walsh confides, I nod.
“I know his number off by heart, I’m off to buy a phone and I ring him, sorting this out once and for all.” My voice doesn’t shake but my knees do.
Mr Walsh nods, we walk to the front counter, he hands me my coat and hand bag.
Then he holds out some money.
“He’s Fridays pay, bit extra for your phone.” Mr Walsh handed her.
“Thank Mr Walsh, don’t worry I’m not going anywhere yet.” I smile, hugging him, then I headed out into the cold and up to the phone shop.
Once inside I looked around, finally deciding on a Samsung touch screen, I bought it and the store clerk help me set it up as a pre-paid.
Walking out the door, I slipped into the alley, leaning against the wall, I shakily dialled Garrett’s number, with a deep breath, I pressed call.
My gut twisted with nerves, as it rang.
It rang 4 times, I was about to hang up when it connected.
“Hello.” It was Garrett but he sounded cold and impatient.
“Who’s this what do you want?” He pressed, I took a shaky breath.
“Hello Sir Garrett.” My voice cracked at the end, tears spilled down my cheeks freely, after a long pause he answered.
“Princess? Is that you?! Please tell me its you!” His voice was urgent and hoarse.
“Yes,” I gasp, I started laughing, “Yes its me Garrett!”
“Where are you? Did someone find you? I’ve been looking for you everywhere!” He continued, god this next part would hurt, breaking his heart and hers all over again.
“I’m not telling you where I am, I calling to ask you to stop looking.” I held my voice steady as I could.
“Ivy, Why did you leave me without saying goodbye?” He sounded so defeated.
“I couldn’t stand to tell you I was leaving, because at the time I was so in love, I wouldn’t of been able to go through it. Mitch and Lucus spoke the truth, leaving you was the hardest decision I’ve ever made, but it was in the best interest for both of us.” I finish my tears could be heard in my voice
“Ivy I know I’m not your True mate, but people still sometimes choose their mates, maybe we work so well because we are second chance mates, we just met first.” He voice is full of emotion, he knew he couldn’t change my mind, but he damn well tried.
“Maybe we are, but your true mate is somewhere waiting for you as is mine, I’ll always be your friend, but I can’t be your mate, I’m sorry Garrett, Goodbye.”
I look at the time as I hang up its almost 5 pm, I head back to the store just to inform Mr Walsh, I’m ok and will be back in the morning, he nods not asking more, If he had I might of broken down right there.
When I arrived back in the motel, I stripped down to my undies heading for the bathroom, I needed to distress, I grab the bath oil I’d brought with me and my favourite soap.
I turned the taps on full, drizzling the oil through the water I put it outside the bath, flicking the undies off, I step into the bath soap in hand, lowering myself into the filling water.
I soaped myself up, basking in the waters warmth and the calming smell of the vanilla and caramel mixed scents.
I relax as the water laps over my knees and chest, I turn off the taps, leaning back.
I finally let the tears fall, for mum, for Garrett, for me, I was so tired.
I’d wished that Garrett had been my mate but I couldn’t agree to be his, in place of someone whom hadn’t been given a chance.
Agni had stressed to her how important a Mate was, they would be our other half, created by the moon goddess herself.
I felt it was unfair for me to choose without meeting my mate, what if they had been waiting for me.
I hoped someone would be waiting for me, I was independent and stubborn as hell, I wouldn’t change my mind or my ways.
But it would be nice to go on adventures and grow old with someone by my side.
I sighed, sliding down letting my head rest on the bath tub, the tears starting again, I fell into a restless sleep.
