By 0830, Beck had prepared for his briefing with the general, and Darwin suggested that he use some time to pay a courtesy call on the 4th Division Chief of Staff just to let him know that he was aboard.
Beck thought Lieutenant Colonel Vic Carter looked about the same age as himself. Beck estimated him at six feet tall and 240 pounds, with a muscular build and the huge arms of a serious bodybuilder. He wore his graying hair in a grotesquely short Marine-style haircut. He knew the nuts and bolts of how a Marine Corps division operated and had the capability to perform any billet, from corporal to commanding general.
