Bri's POV:
For the past three days, I didn't feel well. I had to go to the doctor. He told me that I had caught a cold. That was the last thing I needed. I don't have that much money to spend on medicines. Sadly, I need them. I can try to eat less and save some money. It's not like I haven't been doing this up to now. I eat only twice a day. Once, I saw people throwing out donuts. They were perfect and untouched. I don't know why they ended up in a trash can. Luckily, they were in a bag. I waited for the employee to go back inside and took them. This might be trash for them, but it's a gold mine for me. I can't eat only donuts, but it was free food. Well, I ate only three. I saw two kids looking at the trash cans. Then I felt sad for them and gave them all the donuts I found. They need them more than I do. If you do good things, they will happen to you too. I believe in that. All I want is to have an ordinary life. Nothing else. This is possible, but I don't know when it will happen. I don't think it will be soon. I can wait. It's not like I have a choice. Honestly, I don't even care about this anymore. As long as I have what to eat, I'm good. I have already accepted the idea of being homeless. I had a chance to go somewhere before I was twenty-one. I should probably ask for help, but I won't do it. The thing is that I will never be able to return the favor to people. That's why I don't take anything from them. I want to have a peaceful mind. Also, that way, I learned how to deal with everything alone. I don't need anyone's help. I'm fine. Sometimes, I struggle, but I never let it show. I don't want people to see my weakness. The last thing I want is for people to feel sorry for me. I hope that this will never happen.
It's another careless day. I have been eating sandwiches for almost a week. I would love to eat something different, but it's expensive. I can't afford to have a nice meal. Well, at least I can dream about it. That is better than nothing. Sometimes, I go to the local bathroom and take a nap in one of the stalls. I'm sure that nothing will happen to me there. I wish I could sleep there, but that won't come true. One day, I will have a real bed. Hopefully, I won't be too old when this happens.
Currently, I am at work. My boss got sick, so it's only Charlotte and me. It's not like I mind. We understand each other well. Also, I like her company. I won't say we are friends, but we got close. Honestly, I don't want anyone to know about me. Mostly about my past. That's why I lie that I have a house and a family. Otherwise, people will feel sorry for me. That is the last thing I want to happen. Since I am still here, it means I have done something right. I believe there is a chance for me to fix everything.
- Hey, are you ok? Hello. Earth to Bri.
- What?
- You zoned out.
- I'm sorry. Did I miss something?
- No, it's ok. What were you thinking about? A boy?
- You wish. I have more important things than boys.
- Are you sure?
- Yes. By the way, what happened with your ex?
- You mean my boyfriend?
- What?
- Adam said that his dad made him break up with me. He never wanted to do it.
- And you believed him?
- Yes. Do you want to know why?
- Why?
- Because his parents were invited to that dinner.
- Made by your parents.
- Exactly. His dad admitted it. The man still doesn't like me, but he can't do anything.
- So you and Adam are back together?
- Yes, we are.
- Good for you. It was visible that you still had feelings for him.
- Honestly, they started to fade away. Everything changed when he told me everything. I felt that spark again.
- And the princess and prince kissed.
- That's right. I have to find you a boy. He will make you so happy.
- I appreciate it, but I prefer to do this alone.
- Well, I won't pick one for you. I think you can start checking out the customers.
- Charlotte, I won't do that, ok? Can't you drop this? I'm glad you are happy again, but this has nothing to do with me.
- Ok, fine. Bring this coffee to table three.
- Thanks.
I know she only wants to help me, but thinking about boys is the last thing I want to do. There is no way I will let someone closer to me. If they understand who I am, they will leave. I don't want to be heartbroken. Also, I can't offer them anything. I'm not attractive or pretty. I shower at a local bathroom and barely eat. My chances of finding a boyfriend are not high. It's not like I want that.
- Ok, it's time to go home. I will come early tomorrow to open the coffee shop.
- Ok, no problem. Have fun with your boyfriend.
- I didn't tell you what I would do.
- Yes, but you are smiling. That was enough for me.
- You are unbelievable.
- I know.
- Hello, are you ready? Hey, Bri.
- Hey, Adam.
- Give me five minutes.
- I will give you six.
- How are you? - I asked him
- I'm fine, thanks.
- You can't hide the smile on your face.
- You got me.
- We can go. Bri, are you ready too?
- Yes, I am.
- Awesome. I'll see you tomorrow. Bye.
- Bye, Charlotte. Bye, Adam.
- Bye, Bri. - he said, and both of them left
I checked the watch in my backpack. It's only 5 pm. I won't eat dinner that early. Maybe I can walk around. After all, I need to find a place to sleep. That's when I got an idea. I can see the cats I brought to the shelter. I went there and knocked on the door. The same guy opened it. I guess he remembered me.
- Hey, do you bring me something again?
- No, I'm sorry. Can I see the cats?
- Yeah, sure. Come in.
- Thanks. Did someone adopt them?
- We had some visitors, but no one wanted all of them. They can take only one or two. Mostly, that is about the kittens. I don't think someone wants to get the mom.
- That is terrible. You can't separate them. They are a family.
- I know, but I can't do anything. The animals need a good home. I care about them every day, but it's not the same. If you want, you can take them with you.
- I would love that, but my parents are allergic to cats. That's why we don't have any.
- I see. I guess you are not since you brought them here.
- No, I'm not.
That was a lie, but I couldn't tell the truth. I need to stop doing that. The man let me play with them for a while. I feel bad seeing them in a cage, but they have food, water, and a bed. That is more than what they used to have. Many people prefer buying rather than adopting an animal. I would love to have one. The thing is that I can't take care of it. I stayed in the shelter for a while and then walked away. I have to eat dinner and find a place to sleep. There are many benches, but they are uncomfortable. Sometimes, the ground is a better option.
As I was walking, I saw the kids I gave my donuts to. I found some again and gave them everything. I knew I made the right decision. They saw me and made a sign for me to come. I didn't say no. Let's say that I have nothing better to do.
- Hello. Did you like the donuts?
- Yes, they are delicious. Do you want one? - One of the boys asked me
- Thanks, but no. These are for you. I already ate a couple.
- Where did you find them?
- At one place. That doesn't matter.
- Can we get more?
- If there are more, yes.
- What about your dinner?
- I had mine. You don't have to worry about me.
- Really?
- Yes. Eat now. I'm sure you need energy.
- Thank you. - he said and hugged me
I'm not used to people touching me, but I didn't pull away. That's a kid. How can you say no to a kid, especially if it's like these boys? I have seen them around the town often. No matter what I have as food. If I see them, I will give them everything. It's breaking my heart to see them like that. They deserve a better life, but who knows when it will happen? The same goes for me.
- Where will you sleep tonight? - I asked the boys
- We don't know.
- Do you want to come with me?
- Where?
- I don't know yet. I'm looking for a place too. We can search together.
- Really? That's awesome. Thanks.
- You're welcome. First, you need to finish these donuts.
- They are too much. Will you help us?
- Ok, I will take only one. I'm not that hungry.
I stayed with the boys here for about an hour. Then we went to look for some good places. I have no idea who these kids are. The thing is that I feel the need to keep them safe. After some time of walking, we found a house. I don't think it's a good idea to be here. It's visible that no one lives here. The problem is that it might fall apart at any moment. On the other side, there is a bed. I don't know if we should spend the night here.
- Can we sleep here? - one of the boys asked
- I don't think it's a good idea, boys. Look at this house. It might fall apart.
- But there is a bed.
- I know.
- We can put the bed outside. - the other boy said
- Yes, or only the mattress. That will be easier. - I said
- That works, too.
- Ok, where do you want us to put it? There is not that much space.
- How about here? There is less grass.
- Hopefully, there are no snakes here.
- I don't think so. Who would like to be in this place?
- Animals, for sure. Ok, boys. You have to help me with the mattress.
- Yes, miss.
- Very funny.
We probably shouldn't be doing this, but I promised them to find a good place. This is not the best, but at least we can sleep on something soft. The boys helped me move the mattress from the bed to the backyard. I don't even know if this is a backyard. We'll still use the space. Hopefully, nothing will happen to us. I don't care about myself, but I care about these boys. I will find a way to help them and make them feel better.
- Ok, boys. We are ready to sleep.
- I'm not sleepy yet.
- Me too.
- What do you want us to do?
- Do you know a*********s?
- Yeah, tell us something.
- About what? I don't know fairytales.
- Make one.
- Ok, let's see. Once upon a time, there was a wealthy boy. He had everything one person needed and even more, but he still wasn't happy. Something was missing.
- A princess?
- Let's call her a girl.
- What happened?
- His parents were wealthy, too. They wanted him to find a good girl. One that takes care of herself. Also, she needed to have good manners and dress well. It was the time for a big celebration. The father of the boy made him come with a girl. He said it would be better for him not to be alone.
- Did he find one?
- He did, but the girl wasn't what his parents wanted. The boy was lost in this girl's beauty. He didn't care who she was or where she came from. All he cared about was to make her go with him. The girl refused to accept because she was poor. She had nothing compared to him. Well, he didn't give up. In the end, she agreed to do it.
- They lived happily ever after?
- Not yet. The parents of the boy were impressed by the girl. She had manners and looked beautiful. That was until the son didn't tell them where he found the girl. His dad got furious and forbade him to tell anyone that the girl was poor. Also, he wasn't allowed to see her anymore. That didn't stop him. He found a way to talk with her all the time. It didn't matter what his parents were telling him. He was already in love with her. Good night, boys. - I said and kissed their foreheads
Image if the story comes true. Let's be honest. This will never happen. I made that up. It might be true for someone, but not for me. I don't want anything like that to happen to me. I like fairytales, but nothing of this happens in real life. All their problems magically get solved. If only it had been that easy. Maybe it's good that I haven't been through this. Will I ever finish the story? They deserve a happy ending, but not an easy one. Sometimes, obstacles make one relationship stronger. It's not like I have ever been in one. No one would like to date me. I hope that one day, things will get better for me.
