Maya’s stomach churned as she followed Deran through the winding streets of the city. He had insisted on meeting someone who could help, someone who might know the identities of those watching her.
They entered a dimly lit office, and a tall, sharp-eyed woman stood waiting. “This is Selene,” Deran introduced. “She’s… resourceful.”
Maya studied Selene carefully. There was something intimidating about her, but also a strange warmth. “You’re the one tracking them?” Maya asked, trying to sound braver than she felt.
Selene’s eyes flickered with understanding. “I’ve been watching the patterns. Whoever is after you isn’t just random—they’re organized. And dangerous. But with the right allies…” she gestured toward Deran and Maya, “…we might stand a chance.”
Deran’s gaze met Maya’s, serious and unwavering. “Trust is everything now. If we make mistakes, it won’t just be you in danger—it’ll be all of us.”
Maya felt a shiver of fear and anticipation. Danger was no longer something she could avoid—it had a face, a plan, and an agenda.
As they left the office, Maya realized that alliances came with risks. Some allies could be as dangerous as enemies. And in a world where nothing was as it seemed, trust was both a weapon and a shield.
