Chapter 1 – The Lost Notebook
It was late afternoon when Olivia stormed into the campus café, flustered. Her organic chemistry notebook—months of annotated lectures and carefully organized diagrams—was missing. Her eyes darted from table to table, scanning the crowd in hopes of spotting the familiar teal cover.
Near the corner, Harper was perched on a stool, her sketchbook open and headphones firmly on. Olivia froze. Her notebook was sitting right next to Harper’s coffee cup.
“Excuse me,” Olivia started, trying to sound composed. Harper didn’t hear, lost in the music.
Olivia tapped her lightly on the shoulder. “Hey, I think that’s my notebook.”
Harper slid her headphones off, blinking up at her. “Oh, teal cover? I found it under a table. Figured someone forgot it.” She smiled, warm but slightly sheepish. “Sorry—I was going to turn it in later.”
Olivia’s frustration softened at Harper’s tone. “Thanks. I thought I’d lost half my semester.”
“You’re welcome to check if all the pages are there,” Harper offered, sliding the notebook across the table. Olivia hesitated. Harper shifted her sketchbook aside and gestured to the empty seat across from her.
Olivia didn’t plan on staying, but Harper’s easygoing attitude made it hard to walk away. She slid into the seat and flipped through her notes, finding everything intact.
“You’re pretty organized,” Harper said, observing Olivia’s detailed diagrams. “Wish I could say the same for my sketches.”
Olivia glanced at the sketchbook. Harper’s pencil strokes were messy but somehow alive—a cluster of faces, half-formed and tangled together. “They’re good,” Olivia said, surprising even herself.
Harper grinned. “Thanks. I’m Harper, by the way.”
“Olivia,” she replied, smiling back. Somehow, the frantic notebook search didn’t seem so terrible anymore.
