Chapter Thirty Three Saturday, 17th Ben had not tried to contact Joe and had even steered clear of Caroline for the remainder of the week. Caroline was relieved and really felt she had succeeded this time. He had got the message at last. By the time Saturday arrived she felt like her old, mischievous self. Joe had played golf as usual which had given her plenty of time to prepare. Everything was ready by the time he got home. The study had been stripped bare, every surface cleared of files, books and knick knacks. All that remained were two thick candles flickering on the shelves either side of the door.
