Chapter Thirty Seven Sunday, 25th Caroline waited before responding to Joe’s knock on the bedroom door. Closing her eyes for a moment, she took a deep breath and focused on getting the right pitch and tone for her reply. “Come on in, sugar. Close the door.” Her Southern drawl was soft and husky. She had to concentrate hard to avoid sounding like someone in a Home Counties theatre rendition of A Streetcar Named Desire or worse still, the maid from the Tom & Jerry cartoons.
