5: WITCH’S JOB

1980 Words
“You see, my magic always had a price. It was not something you could easily cast on and change it without paying the same amount of it.” Jennie still went on in a stern voice as she reminded him about the cost it would do to her surroundings, particularly to herself. “That what do you think we need to do?” Mitchel sighed since he didn’t want to cross with another stubborn daughter. “Why ask me?” she was still not giving the alpha any satisfaction. “Jennie, please,” he growled as his patience was running thin. “The pack will be at stake if something goes wrong.” “Have you ever thought about me being on the stake when you dropped that marriage on me? No.” She dropped what made her in her foul mood. Mitchel was guilty about it but it was done and still insisted on staying on the subject. “Jennie, it was not about it. It was for the safety of the pack.” “And I keep my word on protecting it even though my life was on the line.” She firmly replied as the room began to vibrate in some strange force that came from Jennie. “Sissy.” Mikyle might be chuckling yet he managed to pat his sister’s back and calm down. “Have faith in your successor. They will be ruling this pack after you retire.” Jennie reminded their father as she even added what her siblings could do behind their father’s back. “Let Welhima use her battle skills that she’s been training for and let her train the pack. As for Mikyle, let him handle the security since he was an expert on it.” “What do you mean expert?” Mitchel got confused about what Jennie just told him. “You didn’t know your son?” Jennie asked but scoffed. “I bet he’s the first one who can tell if there’s something wrong around the pack’s perimeter before the alarm was set on.” “Mikyle, what your sister was talking about?” he turned to his son for clarification. Mikyle was rubbing the back of his nape shly but still answered. “Well, we thought it would help Jennie from exhaustion on using too much magic to make sure the pack’s barrier was holding up. So, I upgraded the security cameras around the entire pack’s perimeter and they were all undetected since Jennie put some magic in them.” Mitchel was impressed but his expression remained neutral. “And you didn’t tell me because?” “Dad, since you ask us?” Welhima sighed and even added what annoyed her. “I know you’re the alpha of the pack but you rarely be our father. That’s why we did this.” “Welhima, don’t raise your voice on me. I’m talking calmly to you.” Mitchel growled as his daughter growled in annoyance at him. He just felt disrespected but that was not Welhima’s intention at all. “I know you do. But I have my schedule on my training.” Welhima stood up and waved to her siblings. “See you around, Kyle, Sagey.” But Jennie recalled something and pulled something out of the space before giving a rapier sword to her. “Here, I asked the smith to forge it and I already cast something there that could help you when you face magical entities without shifting into your wolf form.” “Lovely. Thanks.” Welhima kissed her sister’s cheek before heading out of the office. “What about me? I’m handling the security.” Mikyle asked Jennie. “Hahaha. Very funny, Mikyle.” Jennie just laughed and went out of the office as well. Mikyle ran after Jennie while shouting. “HEY! JENNIE SAGE! COME BACK HERE!” Mitchel sighed yet he couldn’t help but smile as he watched them leave his room. “I’m really proud of them.” Groaning, panting, and a loud clattering of metals echoed around the training grounds of the Groban’s mansion. Everyone was badly injured and only two remained against one lady opponent. “Is this all you’ve got after being trained two years?” Welhima firmly asked how easily she managed to defeat the pack without shifting. She’s disappointed. “You’ve got to be kidding me.” “We’re not like you, my lady.” One sentinel reacted making Welhima growled. “Don’t give me that excuse.” She sternly roared at them before asking them. “Are you just going to depend on your wolf? What if a witch is preventing you from doing that, can you still stand and defend this pack? Your loved ones?” everyone was looking at each other as Welhima pointed to them the reason why they were in intensified training with her. “Is this only what you can do to keep them safe?” “Then what should we do?” Another sentinel asked before stating the fact of what they’d gained. “We already learn everything we could learn from our training.” Welhima scoffed. “You think you already learned everything…” She was just glaring at them making them shiver and look down then she asked them. “...then why none of you can manage to give me any scratch or even hit me?” None of them could answer until Jennie Sage clapped her hands to cut the heavy atmosphere around her sister’s training. All of the sentinels gave her a respectful salute even though they were badly wounded. “Seems like my sister was giving you a hard time.” Jennie amusingly greeted them and waved her hands to heal their wounds in a short time. “Sagey…” Welhima sighed but Jennie smiled at them. “I’ll give some tips.” She said catching their attention making Welhima shook her head and let her sister give them some pep talk. “My sister here already knew how strong you’ve grown but have you even realized what you are all missing?” she asked but they were just giving confused looks at each other before she proceeded. “No? Well, you’re missing your intelligence.” “But we’re not that intelligent…” One sentinel speaks but Jennie raises her hand to stop him. “I’m not saying that you need to read books and go back on schooling. I’m telling you to learn how to analyze your situation.” Jennie calmly explained to them what she was trying to say to them. “Study your opponent carefully and don’t just attack them randomly without thinking how to defeat them.” “How about we cross some vampires who can read minds?” another one asked. “That’s a nice question.” She chuckled before giving them a simple answer. “Then be reckless. I mean, make them believe that you’re not ready for them.” “How can we do that?” one of them wondered. “If you’re a prey, then pretend to be weak and vulnerable but it doesn’t mean that you’re not prepared for any countermeasure. The same goes when you’re being a hunter, always be one step ahead of your prey.” Jennie answered before she patted the shoulder of her sister. “Don’t forget what I told you and good luck dealing with my sister.” As Jennie Sage passed the training ground, she decided to drop by where Mikyle was cooped up. She was about to knock but instead, she just teleported inside and saw her brother facing a huge screen with three computer keyboards on his desk. “Hello, Mr. Geek.” She greeted her brother who was just checking the entire pack’s perimeter. “Hello, my dear sissy, have you ready my gift?” Mikyle wiggled his eyebrows at her making Jennie chuckle. “Here’s my gift for you.” Jennie handed him a certain chip that was once given to her. “It has the power to detect malicious intent and foul energy of any intruders. It can also detect anyone who could fall into madness.” “Wow, that’s a lot, Sissy.” He could not believe what his sister made for him and started applying it to his computer. Jennie smiled as she shrugged her shoulders. “I know but it will benefit the safety of the pack for any calamity in case something bad happens to me.” “Jennie.” Mikyle sternly looked at her. “Just saying, Kyle.” She knew that he didn’t like it but it was just a heads-up since she was a witch and they were fragile beings. “I’m going to leave the security of everyone in the pack if something bad happened to me.” “Please, don’t say that. I’m going to be angry with you.” He warned while glaring and pouting cutely at her. “I know you will but only you that I could trust in that aspect.” She might laughed over his reaction but she meant what she told him before giving him an amulet. “And here, this one of you. You will know how it works whenever you need it. It will protect you all the time.” “Don’t tell me, this is what I think it is?” Mikyle was shocked as he wore the amulet around his neck in a heartbeat. Jennie chuckled and warned him. “Yes, so don’t fall into madness or it will kill you instead.” “Ha-ha, funny joke.” He suddenly got scared but Jennie shook her head. “A reminder to prevent you from regretting too much.” She messed his hair up and gave him her assuring smile. “I believe in you, Mikyle.” Without further ado in Mikyle’s security office, Jennie teleported out and headed to the pack’s hospital to give their doctors and nurses her herbal medicine. It was her pack’s assigned post if she was not helping Mikyle with their pack’s security. Walking into the hospital’s hall, she was politely greeted and went to their assigned tasks around their pack’s hospital when one of the nurses approached her in a rush. One of the nurses greeted her with a pant. “My lady, great timing.” “What is it?” she wondered about the urgency. “Some of our patrollers last night saw two [four] wounded hunters. We managed to save them but we could not go further due to the silver they had in their bodies.” the nurse explained. “Silver? It should be helping them heal, so, why they aren’t?” she got curious before letting the nurse lead the way. “Lead the way and brief me.” The nurse nodded and started explaining to her about the situation. “It does heal them since we used it to heal their burns to prevent infection. But something happens after two hours of applying it to their bodies, they were starting to react.” “So, it means the silver in their bodies already reaching the toxic level.” Jennie could already guess after hearing the nurse before asking. “Did you stop the silver treatment on their wounds?” “Yes, we do as soon as we notice it. We’re only washing their wounds before wrapping it all up again since last night.” The nurse answered and she opened the door to a certain ward where four beds were filled with badly wounded hunters. “Dr. Argent, Lady Jennie Sage is here.” the nurse informed the doctor who was already busy treating a hunter. “Great. Help me out here, please, my lady.” Dr. Argent smiled in relief and without wasting any more time, Jennie helped around the hospital.
