CHAPTER 1
The sound of knocking on the door got me off my bed as I slowly rolled to the ground. Landing with a thunder, I strutted right up. The knocks continued, but I wasn't bothered knowing how crazy the people in my neighborhood were. I jumped in front of the calendar, checking the date, and to my surprise, it was just as I planned. Today was the 15th of September and also the day I was going to cut all ties with my father. My father, "the chronic debtor," as they called him, is a man with a shattered heart. According to the stories I heard, he was the perfect definition of a husband and father until that very day. I was only seven, but I remembered vividly how my father had held me in his arms and played with me like any other adult. He had thrown me up into the air and caught me when gravity chased me back down. We both giggled as the action continued. We were about to get ice cream from the stall next to the park when he got a call. His happy face came crumbling into a sad one. I could see how tears liberated themselves, falling out of his eyes in an orderly manner, like a race with a single line. He had motioned towards me, thinking about what he would say to me. I knew nothing at that point apart from the fact that he was sad. He had gotten me the ice cream I wanted and carried me into his car. With the rotation of the keys, he had set on the ignition, accelerating immediately as he pulled the gear. We found ourselves in the hospital, and his eyes were now filled with tears. Trying his best to be the ruthless man she wanted him to be, he wiped the tears off his face with his thick, muscular arms. We found our way to the reception, and just as I thought, something had gone wrong. We were led to a VIP ward where the royal and wealthy lived, and upon revealing the insides, I understood his plight. Right in front of me was a figure covered with white material. My father had run towards the figure, pulling the material away to decipher the hidden. There and then I saw it—my mother lying helplessly on the hospital bed. Looking at the monitor, I could only see the zero figure reoccurring. My father wailed, not caring if anyone was with him. I was scared; knowing not what to do frightened me. I didn't know if it was the time to cry or the time to just sit down and watch; I was just so petrified. After that day, my father retorted to drinking. He kept on drinking and drinking till his body became numb. He couldn't take of me as he usually did but made sure I completed my tertiary education. Immediately after I completed my tertiary education, his business crashed due to his excessive drinking behavior and his failed gambling. I advised him to stop, but every time he shoved me away, every single time. Soon enough, he was left with nothing. I thought that would make him stop his gambling habit and I'd provide for the family with my job, but that didn't turn out my way. He began to borrow money from different corporations, loan sharks, and anyone who would lend him the money when he needed it. His gambling and drinking situation became so bad that I had to work overtime to be able to meet up with the debts and expenses every single time. I became fed up, and it was time I cut ties with him and moved to my boyfriend's apartment. I had called Sebastian, my boyfriend, some days back, and he had permitted me to use his house however I liked. This way I could grow and not worry about my father, who refused to let go of his drinking and gambling attitude. "Hey, is anybody there?" The sound of a thick masculine voice sent shudders down my spine. The voice sounded familiar, but I couldn't remember who owned it. "I'm coming," I responded, heading out of my room with my pajamas. The room was supposed to be stuffy, knowing how my father usually littered it all up with alcohol every night, but it was different. Maybe he changed overnight. "How can I help you?" I let out immediately. I turned the doorknob to reveal the unwelcome visitors. "Do you know who I am?" he asked. I could feel the rage emanating from his body, so I had to intercept whatever he wanted to say. "You do seem familiar, but I don't remember you from anywhere. Would you be nice enough to clear that up?" I questioned. He chuckled for a moment but brought his head right up after some moments. "The name's Craig, the head of the Loan Sharks community of San Francisco," he smashed his fist into the wall. "OH, Craig. I've seen you around the neighborhood before," I said. Even though I didn't know who exactly he was, I knew he spelled trouble. "This won't be the last time you're seeing me. That's guaranteed on my side, and it will soon be on your side," Craig's voice resonated in my ears. He was closer to me now, and I was sure he was crazy enough to do something illegal at any minute. "So Craig, how can I help you today? I'm quite busy inside," I let out. "As I said before, I am the head of the San Francisco committee of loan sharks. Your father is our usual customer, as you know, and this time he's in much more debt," he explained. "I've cut all ties with my father. There's nothing I can do about that," I said, about to head back inside. "Your apartment has been given up as collateral," he continued. "That's not a problem; I'll just leave," I held onto the door. I was about to slam the door shut when his door came crawling into my ears. "Seems we'll have to send him to the afterlife.".
