THEY GOT IN THE car and hurried over to the rental house. There were several police cruisers and an EMT van parked in front of the house. Carl spotted their car and walked up to it as they got out.
“What happened?” Tom said.
“Your tenants were awakened by the sound of breaking glass in the kitchen,” Carl said. “One of the men took a gun out of the nightstand, where he kept it, and both of them went to the kitchen. The intruder shot at them. He missed the guy with the gun but winged the other guy. Your tenant shot back and hit his target. I didn’t know your tenants were a gay couple.”
“I didn’t either,” Tom said. “I thought they were just roommates.”
