Daphne POV
Last night, I slept with the king. I slept with Gerald. What was I thinking? I wasn't his mate anymore, but I accepted him anyway. I wasn't in control of my body.
Just after his teeth sunk into my neck and he fell asleep, something happened. It was hot inside my body. I sprung up and rushed to the mirror, staring at my naked body.
Yes, I was shifting. I was indeed shifting. Finally, I have my wolf! That's what I thought.
I jumped out of the window, thinking I'm finally getting what I wanted.
It didn't happen. I was having scales instead of furs. I was having wings. I wasn't changing black or white or brown. It was red.
I'm not a wolf, I'm a dragon. I growled loudly and flew up, losing control of myself. I couldn't tell what happened after that till I heard it from Castro. I burnt half of the city. They thought I was asleep.
"Are you sure the people weren't drunk? There's no such thing as a dragon" Gerald spoke softly.
"Trust me. We need to go take a look. I'm sure you don't want to wake miss Daphne" Castro said. I smiled when he called me that.
"Oh, I don't care about her. I've gotten what I wanted by marking her. What else do I want? Let's go see the people" Gerald added and walked out of the room.
"Hold on, your majesty!" Castro slammed my door and ran after him.
That miserable creature! How dare him! He slept with me because of the mark, just the mark.
I sat up from the bed and checked my body. The scale from yesterday was no more. I'm just me, normal human.
I didn't turn out to be a wolf, it's a dragon instead. The one that was supposed to mate with me has rejected me, yet marked me. Is the goddess playing games right now?
With the bed spread wrapped around my waist, I walked to the window to see the disaster I've caused.
Hell no. It was too much. I hope I didn't kill anyone. What if I did? I grabbed my head in pain. A lot of crazy things were going through my mind already. Gerald, Castro, Artur, my phasing, my sister and now... This.
I calmed myself, controlling my breath. It's just one night, I lost control and I destroyed many things. I just hope it doesn't happen again.
I had my bath and wore my servant uniform. I was still Gerald private slave, until he orders me to leave.
I walked down the hall and bumped into Artur. I bowed immediately.
"Forgive me"
He looked around and walked closer to me, touching my shoulder.
"You know I still love you Daphne" he said. Jeez! Did he have to talk about that now?
"I have work to do my prince" I said and shove him aside.
"Daphne! Dap..." He called my name but, I didn't stop.
Ever since I've been to the palace, Artur has been there to protect me. I considered him as a brother. The one I never had. Until...
One day, he helped me in the kitchen. I was the last maid to leave the kitchen late at night. Since I'm the youngest of them all, they made me do most work, not minding I was the late king private maid. They only act nice when he's around.
"That's the last of them" Artur said, adjusting his royal robe. It fitted him just perfectly. I envied the royal family. They dressed well and they eat well. I never got the chance to do that, because my father gifted me out.
"Thanks for helping me Artur. I'll surely repay you" I said, hanging the rag on my shoulder. He moved closer to me and took the rag away.
"You should have a warm bath and rest. You can use my royal bathroom" he said, in a whisper and I laughed. Of course, I thought he was joking. I took the rag back from him.
"I'm serious. I can let you use it"
I gently pushed him away.
"Don't play with me now" I said and turn to hang the wet rags.
"Do you want me to prove that I'm not joking?" He asked.
"You don't have to. I know..." I was almost done with my sentence when he undo my zipper.
My dress fell off my body. Before I could bend to pick it, Arthur's hand was over me.
I really tried to push him, but he was the commander of the army. As strong as he is, who am I to push him? I'm just a weakling.
The guards on night duty were the ones who saved me.
They saw it was the prince and left us.
I finally picked my cloth and pinned it to my chest.
"I'm sorry. I didn't know what came over..." He said. At that moment, I didn't care if he was a prince or even the king. I slapped him right on his face.
I never talked to him that night. The next morning, he left for the West. That was few years ago. Now, he's back. He's sorry for what he did, but I can't forgive him.
.
.
I was lost in thought, I didn't know when I got to the king's chamber.
I wanted to knock his huge doors, but, the door was opened by Castro. Gerald was leaving. He wanted to go check out the burnt city.
"What do you want?" He asked, seeing me. This was the same creature that slept with me last night. He marked me. Did he forget?
"I was wondering if I could leave the palace"
"Leave?" He asked and scoffed. He hid his hand behind and majestically walked closer to me.
"When I get back, we'll talk about that. I'm busy right now" he said.
"But..." I tried to talk, but, he pushed me. I fell and hit my back. Castro stole glances from me and walked behind Gerald.
I groaned and stood up. Just while I was getting up, Ivy walked to me. She was in the room with him.
"Dad wants to meet with you" she said.
Hold on, am I dreaming? For the first time in fifteen years, dad wants to see me.
A smile blossom on my face. I was the most happiest person in this city.
"Hold on, let me go get dressed" I said and wanted to leave.
"No need for that. Just follow me" she said.
"I can't leave the palace wearing this servant uniform"
Ivy stopped fanning herself. She grabbed her dress and turned to look at me. There was hatred in her eyes.
"You've been wearing it for fifteen years, what's the difference if you change? Come now!" She yelled.
She was right. I followed her. I was insulted, but, the joy of seeing my parents was more than that.
I immediately followed Ivy behind. No soul knew that I was her sister. She wasn't that popular though.
.
.
We got to Gatlin mansion. I'm finally stepping my feet here after so long. I felt the sensation burning through my body the moment I entered the compound. We walked to the main building. Ivy didn't even say a word to me. I didn't care.
"Here she is dad, I did what you asked" Ivy said and sat on the chair, yawning.
My eyes scanned mom and dad. They were so surprised to see me.
"Hello mother, hello Father" I greeted. Dad turned his face away and cleared his throat.
He took a bag from the main table and threw it on the floor where I stood.
"I only want to share this news with you before you eventually get killed by the anonymous dragon" he paused and sipped from his cup of tea.
"What news father?" I asked, in a soft voice. The cup flew from distance and hit my forehead. It fell on the floor and shattered. On the broken glass, blood dropped from my head. Ivy wore a mocking smile on her face. She was happy and surprised that father did that to me. I didn't bother to clean the blood off my head. I just walked to father and checked his hand.
"You should be more careful father. You burnt yourself with the hot tea" I said. I tore my servant uniform and wanted to tie it around his burnt area but, he shifted his hand away from me.
"Daphne, you aren't my daughter. You're not a Gatlin" he said.
I heard a high pitch sound in my head. I didn't want to believe what he said. Tears started rolling down my cheek.
"You don't have lie to me father. I can live my life as a slave in the palace forever. Just don't say that" I said, trying to touch him.
"Daphne! Your helpless mother died in the woods and he saved you. We're only your helpers, not your parents" mom added.
"Then, accept me as your daughter. I won't do anything to tarnish the Gatlin image, I promise" I cried.
"I want you to take the little thing we prepared for you and leave. You're bad luck. You haven't phased and you're 19. You haven't gotten your mate yet also. Your bad luck is spreading round the family and that's why my daughter, Ivy..."
"Real daughter, not fake" Ivy said, raising her head as a peacock.
"That's why my daughter hasn't been mated to the king yet" he concluded. I can't tell them I'm the king's mate. That's not my duty. I couldn't stop the tears rushing out of my eyes.
"Never call me your father and don't step foot inside this house, ever again!" He yelled.
"Dad..."
I uttered, mistakenly. He took the tea pot and threw it at me. The hot tea burnt my body and soaked my uniform. The pain...
Ivy laughed loudly and started clapping. She even snorted. That's the lady that's going to be our future queen.
"Leave from here, immediately!" Mr Gatlin ordered me, yelling at the top of his voice. He wasn't my father. He already prove it. I tried to control my anger. I didn't even take the bag he prepared for me.
I stood up and wiped the tears off my cheek. My leg was still hurting from the burn.
"Thank you, for taking care of me" I said and turned. I staggered out of the mansion, with my wet cheek. It was the first time in fifteen years I cried like a baby. I didn't cry when I was gifted to the king, because I knew, dad was going to come back for me. Every year, I waited. But, he didn't come for me, not even once.
I returned to the palace and entered my room, slamming the door close. I fell on the bed and cried more into my pillow. I deserve more. I should have just burnt all of them to death. But I would become a suspect and I will be dead.
