“Hey! Come on, it’s about to start!” I looked out the window and saw Betty, my best friend, waving at me. I quickly put on my hoodie and dabbed some lip tint on my lips. My friends and I had decided to visit the amusement park, especially since there would be fireworks tonight, like a festival. This happens every year, and it's always a time I can enjoy. “Where’s Kevin?” I asked her as I stepped out of the house. Kevin is our other friend. The three of us are so close that we never want to be apart. “Of course, he’s already there! Probably with that girlfriend he picked up from nowhere.” “That’s harsh… But Jirah is pretty, she just doesn’t care about hygiene.” “Ugh! I still don’t like her! And Kevin, that fool, dated her right away. I’m done with him.” I chose not to say anything more. Jirah is Kevin’s new girlfriend. He was heartbroken a few months ago, but now he’s got a new one. Betty really hates Jirah, claiming she has a bad attitude and is filthy. I can’t blame her, it’s true! I’m not trying to be mean, but whenever I’m near her, I can really smell her body odor. And when she talks, I just want to cover my nose because her breath smells awful. Add to that her teeth that look like they haven’t been brushed in months and her hair that’s messier than my life. I’m not being mean, just honest. “Betty, I want a spot where we can really see the fireworks!” I yelled as I followed her. The amusement park isn’t far from where we live, so we just walk to save money. “Do you want me to carry you so you can see better?” I frowned. Is it my fault that I’m short? Not really short, but she is taller than me. “Look! I was right! There’s Kevin, flirting with his girlfriend.” I looked in the direction she pointed. She was right, Kevin was there with Jirah. He saw us and waved. I awkwardly raised my hand and waved back. “They’re coming over here, Betty,” I said as the two of them started walking towards us. Betty and I quickly took out our masks for safety. “I’m ready.” “Me too.” “Hello! How are you?” Betty and I turned away when they reached us. “Why are you wearing masks? Are you sick?” “Avoiding viruses,” Betty replied coldly. Jirah looked confused. “Don’t you get it? Your breath is like a viru—” I cut her off. “We have a cough, Jirah, so we’re wearing masks to avoid inhaling any bad smells—I mean dust.” “Is that so? Get well soon. By the way, Kau, weren’t you interested in working at the café in town?” I stopped and nodded. “Yes, but they’re not hiring yet.” “Wrong! They’re hiring now! I saw it earlier when Kevin and I went there!” My eyes widened, and I quickly took off my mask. “Really!? No joke!?” “Yes! Go there tomorrow—hey, are you okay?” I almost fainted from the smell of her breath, but Betty caught me in time. “Why did you take off your mask? Put it back on!” I nodded and put the mask back on. We all stopped when a man with a guitar walked to the center. “He’s handsome. Is he going to sing?” I heard Betty whisper. Everyone was looking at the man, and she was right; he started speaking. “Hello, good evening everyone,” the man began. “I’m having trouble with my girlfriend right now.” “Look, he’s looking at a girl,” Jirah said. “I know I’m not blind or deaf. And keep your distance, Jirah, or I might lose my temper.” I just shook my head and focused on the man who started singing. But then I noticed two familiar figures. Slowly, I walked towards them, removing my mask. I followed them to make sure I wasn’t mistaken. I confirmed it—they were indeed who I thought. I quickly took my phone out of my pocket. Calling Boyfriend... The phone rang after a few seconds. “Angelo? Where are you right now?” I tried to keep my voice calm. ["Babe, I’m at the office. Why? Is this about the festival? I told you I can’t come, I have a lot of work to finish."] Liar. “Are you sure? Are you really working late?” Tears started to fall from my eyes. He had no idea I was watching them, following them. ["Yes, let’s talk tomorrow, okay? I’m really busy tonight, Kaury."] I didn’t hang up, just moved the phone away so he wouldn’t hear me cry. ["Babe? I’m hanging up now."] I didn’t respond. I gripped my phone tightly, not taking my eyes off the two of them. I didn’t even notice I had bumped into something hard—or was it someone? I looked up and was met with a pair of blue eyes. “Ah, s-sorry…” I wiped my cheeks, trying to clear the tears. ["Babe? I’m hanging up, don’t disturb me tonight."] I glanced back at my phone. Just as I was about to end the call, the guy took my phone. “Who’s this? Are you talking to someone?” My eyes widened. What is he doing!? ["Who’s this? Kaury?"] Angelo’s voice was still on the line. “W-what are you doing?” “Let’s enjoy this night, hmm? I’ll hang up now, don’t talk to him again.” He ended the call and handed my phone back. I couldn’t believe what he had just done. “W-why did you do that?” “Cheaters deserve to be played.” “What?” “He’s your boyfriend?” I nodded. “Consider him your ex from now on.” I couldn’t respond. He stepped closer to me. “You don’t deserve him.” After saying that, he walked away. “Wait! W-what’s your name?” He turned to look at me, hands in his pockets. Why did I ask that out of nowhere? “Are you interested? Don’t worry, we’ll meet again. For now, you can call me ‘yours.’”
