Chapter 25As Gloria and Sutra drove away, Charlie walked slowly through the low grass toward Nolan. Either he didn't hear her coming, or he didn't care, because he didn't look up.
Pausing halfway at an obelisk-shaped monument, Charlie thought about turning around. Why bother Nolan when he so clearly wanted to be alone? It wasn't like he'd be happy to see her after their recent confrontations.
But how could she leave unless she was ready to give up on Nil? And where else but Nil could she turn for help against Conscience? Even if Nolan was Conscience, he was still, at that moment, her assignment, her responsibility.
Swallowing hard, she kept moving forward.
