Chapter 49Nolan drove straight home. Now that Nil was out of the picture, and Conscience was back on the move, Charlie worried that Mom and Tim were in imminent danger again.
As soon as the Mustang rolled into Nolan's driveway, Charlie threw open the door and leaped out. Without a word to Nolan, she dashed across the yard to her house and bolted up the steps to the front stoop.
Then, as she closed her hand around the knob of the front door, she paused and took a breath. Her heart was slam-dancing in her chest; blood was roaring in her ears.
What if something had happened already? Conscience seemed to be carrying out an intricate plan; what if part of that plan had been the disposal of Mom and Tim while Charlie was caught in the fallout of Nil's disappearance?
