“Wait…you’re mated to the Lycan King?!” Gabby let out with a shocked expression on her features. I immediately moved to cover her mouth to prevent her from shouting any further.
“Gabby? The entire pack’s going to hear you if you keep talking at that pitch.” I gasped, trying to caution her.
I thanked my stars the room was noisy, at least.
Thus, not everyone could make out what she had just said, without confusing it for another.
We were at the bleachers, in the pack’s college, watching the college games being played and eating popcorn. Gabby had dragged my ass here.
“So what? Who cares if they do? You’re mated to the powerful Lycan King. Girl, I wish I were you.”
“Oh no, please don’t. You have no idea what I have to go through literally every day,” I grimaced, grumbling at her, sucking my milkshake through the straw.
“Well if it’s not being the weirdest girl in the pack or wearing my grandma’s braces for her, then I’m in,” she stated.
“Who gave you the notion that you’re weird?” I scrunched my nose.
“The entire pack practically whispers that all the time,”
“You’re not weird, you’re my friend and if the pack thinks you’re eccentric, then I love that about you,” I answered. “If we’re looking for weird, what we are doing defines it,” I added.
Gabby had a huge crush on one of the pack college members, Gideon.
Gideon was Daniel’s best friend. She had met him at a bonfire night and was instantly attracted to him. A blonde quarterback, with amazing features, he was hot, sexy, enigmatic.
I think this was what made Gabby fall for him.
To get his attention, she dragged my ass here to cheerlead and see if he’ll notice she even existed.
I knew it was pointless because there were thousands of people here for the sport but I didn’t want her hopes dry.
“What’s bad about chasing my true love?”
“True love Gabby? You’ve practically had crushes on like six guys in the pack and I’ve had to watch you love every single one of them every day from afar,”
“What’s bad about that? I can’t bring myself to talk to them.”
“And this is not you. You’re an instant badass who doesn’t give a shit.”
“I know, I know. I can’t just seem to talk to anybody I have a thing for.”
“You can try.”
“Trust me, trust me, I have. I wrote a few of them in the past letter, every single day. Put some couple stamps on it.”
“But I don’t just think that I’m good enough. I mean, look at him, he’s way outta my league.”
My eyes were directed to Gideon. I sighed.
“Of course he is.”
And that was how I ruined the moment.
“Really Katniss? Aren’t you supposed to cheer me up and keep my hopes high like normal friends?” she let out, asking me, with an intense look of unbelief.
“What am I meant to stage? Perhaps flying unicorns and drizzling rainbows, all because of him?”
“At least unlike you, I’ve had my first kiss,” she said.
“Okay, good for you.” I gingerly let out, focusing on the games with my legs crossed.
“You’re jealous,”
“Nah, am not.”
“You wish you’d had a first kiss too.”
“That’s so far from what I’m thinking.”
“Okay.”
“Yeah,” I replied.
“Yeah…” she grinned.
Daniel walked to us, a few minutes later. He made Gideon come over. Like a mute entity, Gabby made no effort to say anything to him. She only made out words like “yeah” or “right”. Leila spent her time, scrunching her nose at her the entire time.
She wished Gabby would be more confident with whom she liked.
It was late when we left the bleachers. The game had ended and Gideon’s team lost. Thus, a hint of melancholy filled the air. There was no way Daniel and Gideon’s mood would be lively after that.
Gabby pouted as we walked home.
We didn’t bother taking a car, instead, we took my motorcycle. I kicked the engine and zoomed off immediately. I was going to drop her off with her Grandma and then go back to the pack house.
“Easy Katniss, it’s like you drive with too much rage,” Gabby said.
“What’s with people and our rage?” Leila snickered.
I let out a grin at her words. A gust of wind splattered at us. At least we wore a head guard, so it was practically our bodies we could feel most of the breeze on.
A sudden splattering sound snapped me out of my daze. I could hear various shootings, being directed at us. I looked at my rear-view mirror, dodging whatever was coming towards us.
“What the hell was that?!” Gabby yelled, in a frightened voice.
My hands reached for the eye part of the head guard. I reached for it, to size up from whom exactly we were under attack.
There was a black jeep just beside us. And there were hefty men inside. Two were seated at the front and another three at the back. A sinister vibe came from them. And, they smelled strange.
Lone wolves.
I thought in disgust, the minute it registered on my mind.
“What are they doing here? Aren’t they only found at the outskirts of the pack?” Leila asked.
“We are somewhere around the outskirts and they’re armed.”
“It could only mean that they’re sent by someone,” I added.
“Hold on tight, Gabby.” I let out.
My hands reached for my guns, which were tucked at the back of my trousers. I brought them out, tucking bullets in them and getting them ready.
“You brought guns to the college?”
“I did it just in case,”
I increased my speed, looking back a little shooting at the jeep. The bullets shot at one of them and grazed the other.
I sighed at the minimal effect it made.
“Control the engine, Gabby.” I voiced out.
“Sure thing,” she answered with a badass tone.
Skillfully, I sat at the back, while she got a hold of the engine.
“Now you’re dead.” Leila hissed.
My guns aimed directly at them. I shot at the driver of the jeep, directly at his forehead, the weakest part. The other tried to keep the jeep stable, but I also shot at him too. I shot at the part that contained the fuel and that created a fire immediately.
The jeep lost control and somersaulted.
I watched it crash loudly. It tumbled and continued rolling. After a few seconds, it came to a halt.
“Stop the bike, Gab.”
I came down from the motorcycle the minute it came to a halt. With so many ounces of vengeance withheld, I made my way towards the damaged car which had traces of fire in it. Kicking the door, I tore it off with my Lycan strength, bringing out the man the bullet grazed at the back seat.
The rest were dead and he was howling in pain, with blood smearing all over his body. I dragged him through his neck, before bringing his head up to an eye level.
“Who sent you?”
“P-Please…don’t kill me.”
“Who gave you orders and what were they?!” I yelled at him.
“W-We were told t-to bring y-you alive not t-to kill y-you,”
“Who ordered you to bring me alive?”
“The One h-hell s-sent...” he trailed out.
“I need a name.”
He immediately gasped at his words.
No, no, no.
Don’t die when I’m on the verge of knowing the truth.
I silently prayed.
I watched as he struggled for breath. He suddenly froze on his spot, before slowly closing his eyes.
I checked his pulse immediately, at the same time scanning the environment if there were more.
“He’s dead,” I said to Gabby.
“Let’s go, Kat. We need to get out of here.”
With my black boot, I walked towards the motorcycle and got on it. She entered and I zoomed off. No one said anything throughout the drive. The minute we got to her grandma’s house, she fearfully got down and began retreating inside.
I held her.
“What?” she said, with a panicked breath.
“Tell no one of this for now.”
“I need to get to the bottom of this.”
She nodded her head briefly before going inside.
“You’re late, Katniss”
A voice, which I recognized to be the Lycan King’s, boomed around the training field.
