How. To. Fight
I was born the night an Oak Tree fell. My parents, knowing that it signified a blood bath war, hid me underground with my nanny, Ida. My mum who was a Lycan, had fought in the battle after childbirth. It was indeed a great battle that made tragedy strike. Mum fell into a coma after being shot with wolfsbane. This broke Dad, seeing his mate in a condition like that. She woke up six months later. I was told it surprised no one because Mum had always been a good fighter. And I took over her. As the last born, I was pampered greatly by my mum and dad. My parents had said I was a special child because of the circumstances of my birth, but I still lived. I was far from being the only child. I had twin elder brothers, Hayden and Hunter, and a sister, Katherine. The twins, Hayden and Hunter are the most hilarious people I’ve met since birth. No room could be melancholic, whenever they are around. This is why the pack citizens like having them both around. Katherine, on the other hand, lived to fulfill the pack’s expectations. She is what I would call the perfect epitome of a good Luna-like mom. Also, she could be so protective of her inner self. She just never brings it out. I remember the countless times I played with Katherine as a kid. She was my best friend and buddy. Not until one day, when she shut me out. She just did and I never knew the reason why. Today, was like any other day. As I threaded the pack grounds to train, I came across my best friend’s brother, Daniel. Daniel was Ezekiel's brother. My best friend had been killed earlier this year after trespassing the pack of the king of all Lycans. The king was rumored to be heartless, dangerous, and a well-known Casanova. To win a bet, Ezekiel had gone far off to his location in the Frost kingdom, with his crew. The bet involved trespassing the pack and coming out alive. I remember that day vividly. I had expected him to come back from where he went, with his crew. He just never did. Only a few of the crew that escaped, told me they were ambushed even before they crossed the land. They mentioned that it was the king of all Lycans who cruelly ripped apart Ezekiel without mercy. Ever since that day, I had hated that Lycan King. I wished him dead for taking my best friend from me. “Trouble in paradise?” Daniel asked me with a smile on his face. His red hair was similar to Ezekiel’s, reminding so much of him. I understood that he was trying so hard to not cry too much, after his brother’s death. And, it was hurtful. “Nope, just wanna go train,” I muttered back at him, with a hand taking off my black badass hoodie. My brown hair was in a bun as I had left it, just a few minutes ago. I, Katniss, had sworn to protect Daniel ever since Ezekiel's demise. To do that, I knew he also had to learn to defend himself. Didn’t want another situation arising that’d make me lose him too. My feet walked past him, as I attempted to go to The Fronts. The Fronts was the main training ground. People fought to hell and back there and no Lycan showed mercy inside. I had only lost three battles whenever I trained. One from the Lycan Alpha of our pack which was my dad. The second was from my mum, who was a very powerful Lycan Luna. The third was from my perfect sister, Katherine, who was also skillful. She was training with the aim, of being like mum and dad one day. “You coming?” I asked him, with a look of pretense. If he said he wasn’t coming, I'd probably drag his ass up to The Fronts. I mean, it was all for his good. “Like I have a choice,” he responded, swaying the cigarette that was in his hands. I signaled at it, making him throw it to the floor, crunching it with his legs. I nodded at him to follow me that instant. As I entered the Fronters, I felt a lot of fellow Lycans look at me. I had an Alpha’s blood; thus, I could radiate power and dominance. They all stopped in their spots, bowing down to me. With my wolf smiling at their submission, I braced myself to talk. “Carry on with practice, don’t mind me,” I said. They instantly did, making me drop the backpack I was carrying. I brought out the boxing gloves from the back and some knee pads. Throwing one in Daniel's direction, he caught it. I put it on with the help of both my hand and my teeth. When it was all set, I tested them by creating a friction. They were firmly placed. “Let’s begin now,” I seethed, giving him a serious look. Even though my heart was all softened towards him as a sister’s would, I didn’t want to think of relaxing. Training Ezekiel well was what I failed to do, and I wasn’t going to make that same mistake with his brother. My fists, in the gloves, threw a punch in his direction. He was able to successfully dodge it, swaying to the other direction. That made him so happy, glinting his teeth. My eyes calculated the distance between him dodging. I made a false move in a direction. He assumed that I was going in that direction, dodging once more, but I immediately reversed, going in the other direction. My hands forcefully came in contact with his jaw. Daniel fell helplessly on the floor, with blood spilling out his mouth. A part of my heart softened at the sight. I had a strong urge to go up to him and nurse his wounds. But I didn’t. Because it would make me look weak. Instead, I reached for my backpack and threw a bottle of water at him. “Rinse it off before we continue,” I said, without batting a lash, looking in the other direction. I never allowed people to see the hurt in my eyes. I wasn’t going to look vulnerable in anyone’s eyes. He opened the bottle, sipping from it. I watched as he drank from the bottle, rinsing the blood off his mouth. He reached for his teeth, touching every part to make sure it didn’t get broken. “You have to go soft, Katniss. I’m not the real enemy, you know.” he reminded. My hands immediately reached for my backpack. I brought out a mouthguard, throwing it at him. “Use that,” I responded. He arched his brows at me. “Really? Not even answering my question?” Still on the floor, he asked, swaying his hands in the other direction. I stood up, demonstrating for him to stand up. His face was written in amazement, throughout the training session. I just never made any attempt to answer his questions about my personality. Instead, my only statements were the instructions on how to be a good combater. … I got back to the pack house in mid-day. The moment I entered; I could hear the twins arguing on something. Now, let me advise you for starters. Whenever the twins are arguing, never interfere. You wouldn’t be able to resolve it and they would even drag you in, making you feel like the bad guy. I learned this the hard way, a long time ago. And ever since then, I just ignored both of them whenever they were arguing and did my own thing. “You didn’t even wipe the bleachers properly, Hunter,” Hayden told him. My brothers were so much identical that you could have a hard time knowing who was who. My mum, who also had this trouble, gave them a mark on the sides of their forehead to recognize them. “I only left a little spot, Hay. Didn’t just want to murder the organism that I identified with the microscope from the attic.” Hunter replied. My brows arched immediately at their argument. At times I found them both so entertaining. Other times it was just so humorous, that I laughed out loud. Not this time, though. I reached for a bottle of milk in the fridge. I gulped it, before breathing a relief sound. As I jammed the fridge close, my hands took some vegetables with the knife. I began slicing them to prepare them for eating. “Wasn’t there a way to wipe it clean without hurting them?” Hayden asked again. “No, they are live on those to survive, duh!” he replied. Footsteps immediately threaded in the direction of the twins. I was just in a corner of the kitchen, wondering what exactly was in my elder brother's head. They were in love with science, making them Lycans with theoretical knowledge. “Quit it, you two blockheads!” My Mother exclaimed as she came out. She made her way towards me, in the kitchen. Her hands moved to get the apron before she entered the kitchen where I was. Her focus moved to me, watching me. Mother had unique silver hair from her bloodlines. Katherine took that from her but I didn’t. My brown hair was all from Dad’s. Mother was from the Ice Kingdom and was also a pack, called The Frost. Said dad met her as his mate, during a ball. “How’s Daniel doing?” she asked me. “Fairly fine, mum. Though he does a great job hiding his emotions.” I replied immediately, with my hands still using the knife. “Don’t be too hard on that kid. He has no one left to understand him.” Mum told me. She was referring to the type of home Daniel was in. Since he and Ezekiel lost their parents in a rogue attack, they both lived with their uncle John in the pack. Their uncle was an irresponsible and negligent figure... Drank so much, never just paid adequate attention to them. Even when Ezekiel died, it didn’t change anything in him. He just felt sorry for them both, yet, never changing his ways. “I understand, mum. Just doing it all to help him. Don’t want history to repeat itself.” I breathed out, cutting the last piece of the vegetable. My hands reached for the egg beside me. I cracked it, flinching my eyes when I remembered the day, I got the news of my best friend’s death.
