Next Step

Lunch was ready in a pig’s eye. Mother made sure to spend her time explaining the reason she and Dad welcomed Lycan King Nick. She had made me promise not to do anything stupid. I did give her my word. But in the little part of my head, I knew I was going to avenge the death of Ezekiel, at all costs. My best friend’s death wasn’t going to be in vain. I didn’t have to tell her that. She was going to stop me if I told her. “Say some prayers, Hayden.” Luna Gryffon ordered my brother. The meal had been served flamboyantly today because Dad was organizing a send-off party for the infamous Lycan King. “Mother of all, Moon Goddess…” Hayden started. I thoroughly observed everybody around the table, as he continued the prayers. Everyone had their eyes closed. But awkwardly, the Lycan King’s eyes were wide open in a cold expression. And it was directed to me. My steely blue eyes watched his sternly, wondering what this exactly was about. His veins were all stretched on his forehead. Something about him screamed control. I sighed, tearing my eyes away from his. Hayden concluded the prayer shortly. My hands fisted just underneath the table, where no one could see it. “How couldn’t we have foreseen this?” Leila snickered. I knew she was referring to the short-lived stay of the Lycan King. His going back, only meant that I couldn’t have access to him. Thus, no form of revenge. “We can only hope now,” she added, with a low spirit. I needed another chance to fulfill my mission. “Serve the meal, Kate.” Mum directed to my sister, with a trustworthy expression on her face. The striking similarities in them both were also making me crazy. Because she was nothing like mum. She was deceiving all of them, by acting goody-two-shoes. Too bad they couldn’t even see it. Just as she did serve the meal, I picked up my silver cutlery and commenced eating. Our kitchen utensils were distinct from most wolves’ own. Unlike normal wolves, Lycans weren’t affected by silver. Knowing this, Alpha Gryffon made sure the normal wolves had access to gold kitchen utensils. Since mum’s favourite thing to do, was cooking, she certainly didn’t need the help of the Omegas or Gammas. Thus, no silver was in their way and it was all safer. “I hope you enjoyed your stay here, Your Majesty.” Alpha Gryffon said with so much respect. I looked at Dad. What was he doing? “In hospitality, I could you’re great at it. However, going to safety, there are so many loopholes to be fixed. There might not be time because enemies come in unannounced,” Lycan King Nick stated. The mood was filled with tension and far from euphoria. Freezing at their spots, no one made a move to say anything. It was pretty obvious that they were intimidated by the Alpha. “Seriously? He’s like you all, duh!” Leila angrily said. “And he eliminated a member of the pack, assh*oles,” I answered her. But it was all in the little part of my head. “In the note of this, I decided.” The Lycan King continued, with an emotionless and detached expression. “The training session would continually be inspected from time to time after we leave,” “If there is no sign of improvement, everyone in this room knows the next step,” he finalized, breathing out. The next step? Was he referring to a takeover? Sh*t, that couldn’t happen! “We understand Your Majesty,” Alpha Gryffon submitted to him, saying. “We do understand,” Mum said, doing the same too, and so did Kate and Ida. I did the same so as not to arouse any unusual attention. Leila inwardly rolled her eyes, and so did I. For the first time, in a long while, our thoughts were in tune. From my seat, my mind lurked to numerous thoughts to prevent him from leaving. “We need to think of something,” Leila advised. “I know, just don’t know what,” I answered her. Moments later, we were done eating. Kate went with Mum to prepare for the Lycan King’s departure. Hayden and Hunter retired to check out the technology gadgets Frost Kingdom introduced. They found it cool and went pretty well with Delta Ryder. I found myself in Nana Ida’s room, not exactly sure of what I was doing. Perhaps, something about her room made me cool off. “You’re here again, dearie,” Ida called out from her chair which she was currently seated on. “I guess, Nana” I sighed out, taking long strides into the room. “Since the Lycan King is departing, my priorities are diminishing now,” Folding my hands, I let out. I walked towards her stack of books and my hands reached for a few books. They were all old books, which contained histories of werewolves, Lycans, and various creatures told only in myths. For some reason, most people in the pack avoided the subject of other creatures. I always went through this, as a child. Books were more like assets to me. I discovered this habit then. Thus, I took comfort in these stacks of Ida’s treasures, since then. It had a way of broadening my thinking and giving me ideas. “You seem to have taken a sort of attraction towards Lycan King Nick. Isn’t that purely coincidental—” “Not at all, Ida.” I firmly stated, without batting an eye. “There’s no way I’ll ever have even the slightest desirability for a callous, cruel, and cold-blooded creature as that,” I added, with a snarl. “Then what’s the problem, dear?” Questioning me, she said. “Why would the priorities of such a young Lycan like you, be curtailed?” With one of her books in my hands, I walked towards her. I took a glance at the seat beside her private chair, before settling down. “I need to prolong the stay of the Lycan King, Ida. Only then, will I feel accomplished.” Flipping over the pages, I replied to her. Something ran through my head that instant. “There is only one who can help, after all.” Leila constructed, saying. “Who?” “Cynthia,” she smirked out.
