A Way To Love

THE HOSPITAL:

70.

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT OF THE HOSPITAL. MAIN ENTRANCE.

Kaden rushes into the hospital. He looks very worried. He immediately approaches the reception.

KADEN

Hi! There has been a car accident!

Today! A girl has been injured!

Bree Dane! Where is she now?

The receptionist checks the registration system.

THE RECEPTIONIST

She is in the emergency room. Turn right after you pass the elevators...

KADEN

Thank you!

And he runs towards the emergency room. He enters the room. It is a big hall with several hospital beds inside. They are all empty except one. He carefully comes closer to the bed and sees that there is a woman lying on it. She is very badly injured, lying unconscious on the hospital bed with external bandages covering her body and face. Kaden thinks it is Bree. He feels the ground is falling out from underneath his feet. He can't stand on his feet and for a moment, it looks like he is going to collapse. He manages to pull himself together and comes even closer. We see tears in his eyes.

KADEN (CONT'D)

Bree...

His voice is choked with tears. He kneels down beside the injured woman's bed.

KADEN (CONT'D)

Oh my God, Bree... What happened

to you?

And at this moment Bree comes out from behind a hospital privacy curtain. And she sees Kaden kneeling down beside the injured patient and crying. But Kaden doesn't notice her. Right now he doesn't feel anything but pain. Bree is surprised to see him here. She comes closer and hears what he is saying.

KADEN (CONT'D)

(in a voice choked with

tears)

Oh God... Please... Please, Bree, don't leave me this way!

(MORE)

KADEN (CONT'D)

Please, I just... I can't handle this pain! I'll do whatever you want... I can't live without you! Oh Bree... Bree, please...

At this moment Bree realizes that Kaden thinks Bree is the one who is lying in that bed, covered in bandages. She comes closer to him. Touches his shoulder.

BREE

Kaden...?

Kaden raises his head when he hears her voice. And he sees Bree, standing there in front of him, safe and sound. It startles him at first, but then his entire face immediately lights up. He quickly stands up and hugs Bree tightly. He is so happy!

KADEN

Oh my God! Bree, you are all

right! Thank God!

Bree tries to calm him down. Kaden suddenly comes back to reality and remembers the recent unpleasant events that happened between them. He gently pulls himself back a few inches and wipes the tears from his eyes.

KADEN (CONT'D)

Umm... I thought you'd been in an accident and...

BREE

Yeah, I had. But I'm alright. It

was just a small accident. But,

Kaden, what are you doing here?

How did you find out about the

accident?

KADEN

Umm.. I just...

BREE

Olivia, of course.

KADEN

Yeah.

BREE

Oh, she shouldn't have. Sorry, she made you worry unnecessarily.

KADEN

Oh no. It is okay. I'm just happy that you are okay. That's all I need.

At this moment Bree's friends rush into the emergency room.

Olivia is among them, too. They are all worried.

OLIVIA

(worried)

Bree, are you okay?

BREE

I'm okay, Olivia, don't worry.

Olivia looks at her brother. Kaden, seeing Bree surrounded by her friends, slowly turns around and leaves the place. From the shock he had just experienced, he is walking like his feet are too heavy for him to carry. Bree is just watching him as he slowly walks away from them. Her friends are asking her a lot of questions.

BREE (CONT'D)

Okay, guys, let's not forget we're in a hospital. I'm alright, so let's get out of here first.

STEVEN

Okay, that's a good idea. I hate

hospitals.

OLIVIA

(to Bree)

Are you sure you're okay? Maybe

you should stay here a little

longer?

BREE

No, Olivia! The doctor said there's nothing to worry about and I can go home.

OLIVIA

Okay then.

BREE

What about the meeting?

OLIVIA

Oh, we cancelled it. Don´t worry

about that. We can do it another

day.

BREE

No, no, please. We still have time. And I'm really alright. Let's do it today. I don't want to cancel it.

OLIVIA

Okay, as you wish. But I will

drive you home today and I will

stay with you tonight, okay? And

don't say "No"!

BREE

Okay, Olivia. I know it's useless to argue with you.

And she smiles at her. They leave the hospital.

THE PUB. NIGHT:

Kaden is sitting at the counter and drinking whisky. Zach comes in. He sees Kaden and comes up to him.

ZACH

What's up?

Kaden just nods his head.

ZACH (CONT'D)

Come on, tell me what happened.

Kaden doesn't answer.

ZACH (CONT'D)

Bree again?

KADEN

Yeah, Bree again.

ZACH

Man, aren't you exaggerating a

bit?

KADEN

(without looking at him)

Am I?

And he looks up at Zach and then back down at his drink. KADEN (CONT'D)

I love this girl, Zach. Don't you see it? Today... When I heard she'd been in an accident... I almost had a heart attack.

(MORE)

KADEN (CONT'D)

Today I realized how much she

means to me. I don't know what I'd

do if something happened to her.

Zach is listening carefully.

KADEN (CONT'D)

(continues)

I can't lose her, Zach. Everything was so good... And in a moment, it all changed. And again, I don't know how to fix it but I just can't let go...

(pause)

You know, she said that she started feeling something for me, too... I can't lose it, man, I can't lose it...

ZACH

(gently touches his

shoulder)

Then you will not.

WEEKEND. MORNING:

FRONT YARD OF THE BUILDING WHERE BREE LIVES.

Olivia, Steven and two more girls are waiting for Bree in Olivia's car. Apparently, they've been waiting for quite a long time. Olivia starts beeping her car horn.

OLIVIA

Come on, Bree! What is taking you so long?

And Bree appears from the block entrance. She hears how Olivia is beeping her horn without stopping and hurries towards the car.

BREE

Okay, okay! I'm already here! Stop honking! It's 6:30 a. m.! People are sleeping!

OLIVIA

Finally, girl! What took you so

long?

Bree gets in.

BREE

What took me so long?

She sounds like she is asking herself the question. She repeats again.

BREE (CONT'D)

What took me so long? Well, I was still deciding whether to go or not... I mean, it is the weekend, Olivia. And weekends I spend at Care Home. You know it.

OLIVIA

Exactly! You never find time for

yourself! You are a human being,

too, my dear! You need to have

fun, too!

BREE

I have fun at the Care Home.

OLIVIA

Okay, I know, you do. Okay, let me put it this way then. You need to have some time with your friends, too. With us!

(looks at Bree and

smiles)

Really, we miss you. When was the last time we did something fun together? Like picnic?

Bree looks at her.

BREE

I know.

OLIVIA

I know that you know. Besides, you are going to love the place we're going! And I'm sure no one will miss you today at the Care Home.

Then Olivia looks at everybody in the car.

OLIVIA (CONT'D)

So everybody is here and ready to go now. Then let's go!

She starts the engine and they drive away.

OLIVIA (CONT'D)

(while driving, to

Bree)

I will join you next weekend at

the Care Home.

BREE

Oh, that's very nice of you.

(pause)

How long will it take to go there?

OLIVIA

Where? To our place? Around one

hour.

Bree leans her head back against the headrest and closes her eyes. We hear the song playing in the car while they are driving away from the city on an empty asphalt road towards the rising sun. The weather is very nice today. It is not so cold. Looks like spring is just around the corner. And as they drive along the empty road, their car dissolves into the sunrise.
