CHAPTER FIVEIt was Sunday morning. We sat on the front porch steps and watched for the limousine to arrive. It was to take Mom to the airport, and it showed up at breakfast time. The limo was a perk Garland-Price provided for traveling executives. Garland-Price was where Mom worked. As limos go, this one was not especially long, just big and black and clean. It rolled to a stop under the cherry trees that spread their branches over the driveway. The engine purred. The trunk lid clicked open and slowly eased upward. A big man with slicked-back hair sat in the driver’s seat. He stepped out into the driveway dressed in a long and impeccably pressed black suitcoat. He smiled at the three of us sitting on the steps. Tilly was sandwiched between Zach and me . . . she at least, not understanding
