Chapter 23:

2020 Words

Chapter 23: For the first time, he noticed a path where the dust had been swept away by the boots of people invading the hallowed ground. He couldn’t help identifying what looked like drag marks between the footprints. It mattered little if the sun was up or down. Once they left the steps behind, they entered the land of perpetual darkness and the dead. Thaddeus knew enough of the area’s history to make an educated guess about the structure that twisted its way under the castle. The architecture reminded him of ruins he had seen in and around Venice, Florence, and Rome itself. The construction of columns and arches in the vaults allowed him to guess this was older than the statues that guarded the entrance. The skulls adorning the walls offered a gruesome touch he was not familiar with.
