Chapter 1
The world is all about happiness and sadness coexisting together. It is often said that when it gets too dark, your shadow leaves you, symbolizing how people—even your friends abandon you in difficult times.
Shadows are always formed on the opposite side, it owes its birth to light. The brighter the sun, the darker the shadow.
Light, always shines whenever it wants without ever stopping. But why is it that shadow always needs to depend on it and prove itself over and over again?
“That’s b*llshit,” I hissed, almost laughing at myself.
I looked down for a brief moment to shrug off those little thoughts.
But with the slight movement of my lips, my left cheek stung. It burns. My father never laid a hand on me until now. He didn’t even try to know my side. He immediately began to voice his disappointment in me, yet again.
In his eyes, I didn’t do anything right.
I pursed my lips and tried to lick it but the sting from my left cheek was still there.
“Isn’t it ridiculous how much better your sister is doing this than you?” his raging voice rang through my ears. “As much as I wanted you to keep on your tracks, you still managed to stick on your own desires. You never failed to disappoint me.”
He turned his back on me, fixing his coat.
I did not lift my eyes at him but I know that he stopped for a while. I heard my sister shifting her weight but she didn’t do anything.
I bit the inner side of my lower lip to suppress myself from shedding tears.
“I was a fool out of myself when I considered a marriage between you and the heir of the Arellanos. Good thing, you proved yourself wrong again. Don’t make me feel embarrassed again, Akira.” I could almost see himself gritting his teeth. “You deserve nothing in life, so don’t come to me running to help you rise up.”
I just drove with nothing in mind where to go. I just want to be alone and think quietly. For once, I wished that I was born in a different family where I could be myself. But I thought that we are not always the ones to make decisions for ourselves. In my case, my fate doesn’t lie in my own hands.
My thoughts were suddenly interrupted when the front of my car collided with the car in front.
“Hey, do you want to kill yourself?!” A man went out of the car and shouted, pointing his finger at me while. He stopped right beside my car and slammed against the door. “Get the f*ck out! Are you using your feet to drive?! Stupid motherf*cker.”
My heart was racing against my chest so bad when I opened the door. Besides not knowing what exactly happened I also had no idea how to plead with him properly.
The guy looked drunk. It looks like he’s going to run wild any moment. A man also got out of the car and approached us. I thought he would help us with this problem but I don’t think it would happen.
“I’m sorry, I was careless. I would just pay—”
“I don’t f*cking need your money! I have tons of that! Miss, if you do not know how to drive, don’t even try to lay your hands on that steering wheel again! You’re not helping..”
I heaved a deep breath to calm myself. “I didn’t see your car. Besides, you’re the one who suddenly cut into the lane so obviously, I’m probably going to hit you!”
“You even have the guts to—” He raised his hand to add a hit on my swollen cheek but a firm hand stopped him.
“Sorry for the inconvenience. We’ll pay for the damages…”
Gregory intervened, the man my father thought I would marry. He gazed at the man sharply before glancing at me with his furrowed brows. “Apologize to them..”
Why would I? It was not even my fault! He was the one who suddenly cut into the lane. That alone was punishable and is against the law!
“I won’t. It’s not my fault, why would I ask for apology?” I firmly uttered. I know I’mnot at fault. I was mindlessly driving, yes, but my eyes was wide open and saw that he cut into the lane.
“Akira,” he warned.
I don’t even know why he’s here and why he’s suddenly meddling with my problem. “This is none of your business so leave me alone.”
I went to get my wallet and handed the guy enough money to get his car fixed but he firmly refused to take it. I don’t know what he needs but because of the commotion, people started to flock and watch us.
“You know what, Miss, there are things money can’t pay for. What you did to my car is not enough, but if you really want to settle, maybe we can negotiate and work something out…” He smirked as his eyes roam around my body maliciously. The man beside him smirked too.
Only a fool won’t understand what they meant, with that, I started to lose my cool.
Gregory was about to punch him but I was faster to kick the guy’s balls. He fell down and I heard some gasps. The man winced in pain while muttering curses. He still managed to slowly stand up and that was when Gregory held my arm and pushed me slowly to my car. I was about to hop in when the man spoke.
“You filmed that, right?” he asked his colleague. A silly grin was hiding on his lips.
The other man nodded, he was holding his phone while angling it to his friend while filming him walking in pain.
“’Akira Ramirez was caught assaulting a guy'… how does that sound?” The man who filmed me teased.
I took a step closer to them but Gregory immediately help my arm, making the two men run inside their car and drove fast.
I groaned in frustration and glared at the man beside me. He was not helping at all!
I pushed his arm and went inside my car.
I was not surprised when Daddy called me to his office again the next day. Just last night, my name was involved of a break-up of two famous artists, which is why my Daddy is so angry. Now, there is another.
When I entered, Elena’s face greeted me. She looked concerned. Next to him was the man who tried to help me, sitting quietly. The seat in front of them was empty but I didn’t bother to sit down.
After a while, the door opened again and Dad entered.
“The board called an emergency meeting and the press is asking for my statement regarding your issue! Two important investors pulled out upon hearing the news and you just showed up, looking unbothered, Akira?!” my father’s voice thundered around the entire office. “Is this your rebellion to me?”
I remained silent.
“I’ll try to convince Mr. Gokongwei, Dad,” Miss High and Mighty, Elena Ramirez, said. “I sent an e-mail to Mr. Chan’s secretary and she replied that they will set an appointment for reconsideration.
For once, would you please shut up?
“Thank you very much, hija,” my father relaxed a little when he heard those from her. Some white strands of his hair and creases on his face are noticeable as signs of his age. “If it wasn't for your help, I would have wasted my time cleaning up this brat’s filth.”
With that, he left.
This brat’s filth.
Damn, he did not even bother asking how I was or, at least, about what happened.
I swallowed hard and composed myself but noticed that Elena stood up and walked to me. She tapped my shoulder lightly. “Gregory already explained to me and I know that it wasn’t your fault. I also talked to Atty. Marasigan to fix the issue. Lie low for now, Dad has a lot of offer and project to handle. So, please don’t add up to his problems. I hope you understand, Aki..” Her voice sounded soft and gentle.
I was looking away and did not even bother to glance at her, but with the tone she used, I almost snapped. It was almost swayed with that tone.
I am not sure if she’s hiding something under her sleeves but I can’t help wondering how hard she tries to earn my father’s trust, or maybe, I was really trying hard to convince myself that there’s something with her?
My father barely notices my progress. He always seem to notice my mistakes. Elena? Even if she does something wrong, my father remains blind.
“Are you okay?”
I almost flinched when I heard a low baritone voice beside me. Elena already left, why is he still here.
“You may leave. I’m fine,” I uttered with finality.
“You look pale. Maybe—”
“I already said I’m fine!” I couldn’t help but raise my voice at him. My emotions were all over place, not minding if Gregory is just here, watching me. “You may leave now. Whatever I’m feeling right now, it’s not your business to mind anymore.”
He did not move for a moment. He's just observing me. He heaved an audible sigh before decided to leave. With that, my knees trembled, and I couldn’t help but hold on for support from the couch I was closest to.
Elena, you’re so damn lucky.
You have everything I never had.
My father, whom I am still trying to hold onto to keep myself on track even though I lack support from him. He was the embodiment of something I was trying to achieve, and he was also giving his best to assist in everything Elena wished for.
And... Gregory, whom I considered liking way back before. He was the one who tried to give me company when I was barely sane by myself.
Elena Ramirez, you’re f*cking lucky.
